Working Bedlingtons 2005
Oldandknackered replied to swanseajack's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
is that brown dog in your avater a beddy cross topper ? nice looking dog. -
eh !!! so how do you know its never made any difference if youve never done it ??lol i think i know what you mean?? tubes get opened backout anyway without bridging? i agree with that in the main, but i have defo known more than one earth ruined by too many holes in em backfilled to numerous tubes, which then go dead, sometimes lost for good. would they have had more chance if they had been bridged and left less blocked solid??? who knows ????
-
I know several experienced lads who swear by bridging , or backfilling in a way to keep the tube open, in order to keep a sett live, the first person who advised me to do it being BN. But I must admit I am often too lazy !!!
-
I must be fortunate then as my Beddys are line bred and ive yet to produce an arse wipe. More power to your elbow Morton, dogs bred for purpose and working out, result. Any chance of any pics of the hybrids?? Got me intrigued now! Atb

Absolutely pl, and we all have to start somewhere , I am certainly guilty, but with mistakes, a bit of experience , and hopefully we learn. personally speaking, if the lad has a 2 season bitch who's only fault is its too hard, I reckon he's off to a pretty good start! But to answer the lads query, no I would not put an unproven dog over her, no matter how he's bred. I would listen to fd and see the breeder of the bitch? paper breeding is the fastest way to lose quality IMO? Anyway atb to the lad in whatever he decides.
-
In my opinion, the best post seen so far on breeding quality terriers I have seen on thl . Combine this with breeding inside a line/ strain and hard to beat as a success formula IMO.
-
Hi lads, just after picking your brains really, have you noticed a correlation between easy to enter pups and good performing dogs ie have you noticed that the best dogs you have owned/seen were very easy to enter/self entered or would you say no correlation?? Myself I have not seen enough to accurately draw a conclusion ??
-
i personally agree with both of you! i have owned and seen dogs which were slow to start and made proper digging tools, and i have also seen and owned dogs which self entered at an early age, no drama or fuss, just as fd describes. maybe its down to the strain or line of dog??? imo pups that self enter are a possible indication of a well bred terrier from a good strain? and terriermen that seem to be able to get most dogs going are just good knowledgeable dog men?

sorry if i bored anyone, actually thought it might be a bit more interesting than, thats bollox coz i say it is!, lol or similar terrierman speak lol my mistake there. regarding talking rubbish, well maybe i have got it wrong, and i guess we can all do a google search on genetics and decide that for ourselves ??? and sounding clever..wow...thats awesum, i didnt mean too, and i didnt think i had?... i think i need to print this and show it to the wife lol. but seriously, it was never meant as a personal go at you or anyone else, i never called anyone a clown, idiot, or anything else as far as
-
well not really, if the secret is about how to create a given stamp of animal,(ie working terrier)science says its got to be about genetics and selection of the most suitable selection of animals for breeding, and the techniques employed in trying to achieve this ie inbreeding, linebreeding , selection of outcross blood if needed etc, ( and of course while adding (apparently) unsuitable blood has the chance of adding unsuitable genes, it can also add sometimes hidden suitable ones). but as just about everyone knows, like does tend to breed like, darwin taught us that over 100 yrs ago. howeve

totally disagree, letting a pup go to someone in no way affects what you and your mates do, what would make the terrier job in a better state would be sharing the good blood and then the overall quality of terriers being bred would go up, and this would in no way affect you or your breeding plans, also how do you know when someone enquires for a pup there (in your opinion) an idiot. they may just be thinking that about you? and all i can say about you giving pups to lads you dont know is you must have changed in the last 15 yrs or so? wanting a working terrier makes u an idiot, I so agree lol

Have to agree with being cautious, sometimes(ESP if you keep yourself to yourself) you can't have people waiting when bitch drops nine healthy pups on you tho...what then sell or cull? I don't pretend to know ??
-
If you look at thread, dogs doing, you will see that is one of my first posts? I generally watch from afar. The thread is basically about a genuine lad with decent stuff being questioned re selling a pup, that got me started, why does he have to explain to anyone? If he wants to breed his dog to a chihuahua and sell all the pups it's up to him...it's his dog. And when you sell a pup you can decide if it's to go to a working home granted, but if you sell surplus as pets , circus dogs or any thing else that comes to mind...it's up to you, there your pups! This does not make you not a real terri

Well maybe the wording was a bit strong, yes I'll take that on the chin, it was meant to be a bit tongue in cheek, but I will stand by the point I am making, with the exception of saying some terrier men, not all. And yes there are some good lads in the game, a.c. And s.j. Stick in my mind as up there, however let's be honest, for every decent lad who will share a bit I reckon there's 5 that won't, so lads wanting a pup have to looking and were do they go. And just so we are crystal what people do with their dogs is completely up to them, absolutely, they want to keep them for them and there
-
And this is why genuine lads are traipsing around country trying to find decent stuff, but if your not in the elite special clique jog on basically, it's a vicious circle Q. How do you stop puppy pedling A. Refuse to sell any decent pups then anybody who wants a pup has to go to a.............lol If it wasn't so funny it could be a tad worrying lol
-
Absolutely IMO, if you and your mate were trying to get some decent racehorses, you had access to the top blood in the country and he didn't , he had to try to reinvent the wheel so to speak, I think it's pretty obvious who would get the best horses ? And quickly. and therein lies the answer to the conundrum, the lads with the best blood have usually struggled so long to get the stuff (and done so much arse lickin along the way) they simply don't want anyone else to have it, it's no more complicated than that IMO so they withhold it, usually behind all kinds of half baked ideas of being a
