  1. Awesome, look forward to seeing their progress! if you're keeping some (/all) of them!
  2. How old are they in the picture?
  3. Ive recently been recommended a book by Gilbert Blaine, called Falconry, I haven't heard it mentioned before but it seems quite geared towards Falcons whereas I've been looking mostly at rabbit hawking so this maybe why? Just wondered if anyone has read it and thinks its worth buying? I'd still be interested in reading it as im not totally decided what I want to fly yet and ive managed to find large sections of it online so could just read it there, but if its worth reading I will buy it? that was I have a hard and complete copy rather than just the odd few hundred pages off of google! Tha
  4. Yes i see what you mean! handling is good but so long as they are still out doing their job regularly too? Next door have two huge hob ferrets that they keep as pets. They let em out almost daily and just let em wander. They live with fields front and side. Heavy bramble, ditches and open meadow. No barriers or closed gaps... John says that in 30 years of marrage he's never had a dinner that wasn't burnt... Because thats the way they are, always sommat else to do and so, they can let them ferrets out at 5pm and only remember they did about 10, or even the next day! Those pugs always come home

  6. Start season after they born, unless they late breds then its usualy after crimbo time, but they start grafting properly the season after if that makes sense mate Some people work them from 6-8 months, I start mine at 8 months with a experience Jill, so at 8 months it'll be coming to the end of the session so they know what to do for the next session then. Okay thanks guys, so basically first season is just like a trial run, learning their trade so to speak?
  7. Yes i could see all the members of my family doing something like that That seems to be the general consensus though! thanks for the advice
  8. Hi guys, Sorry if its a silly question but am still learning: What age do you start working your ferrets?
  9. Okay thats good news! thanks I seem to be getting the impression that kind of thing is quite common! Luckily ive got quite a few live capture traps
  10. yes i thought about a bell but the band is a good idea! do people ferret at night at all? im sure you could use the bell system but also have a small light? or is there no benefit to doing it at night? more hassle than its worth sort of thing? i do a few a few places at night under a full moon or 3 quarter at least its surprising how light it can be on a cold clear night and a educated mutt or two aid the smooth running of things took some good numbers on places you couldnt do in the day time I see what you mean! do you just use the dogs at night then? not nets?
  11. yes i thought about a bell but the band is a good idea! do people ferret at night at all? im sure you could use the bell system but also have a small light? or is there no benefit to doing it at night? more hassle than its worth sort of thing? Ive only tried once at night wasn't for me. Theres one or two on here that do it though. Another tip for you, if you cant dig your ferret out for any reason (for example hes under a tree) open up a rabbits belly, put the rabbit in a purse net then chuck it just inside the closest hole to where you think your ferret is, quite often the smell
  12. haha gotcha, I dont mind trapping the rats or shooting them but I think I'd rather save the ferrets for the rabbits and use my gun for rats personally
  13. do you have to target rats specifically/ train them to target them or more of the case that some like finding them and others dont?

    Next Season

Hi all, Hope all is well. I joined the forum at the start of the year while doing some searching around online for more information on BoPs. Basic story is ive wanted one for a long time and have begun to seriously start to try and increase my knowledge. Ive been recommended some great books by guys on here and have read these. But obviously this doesn't give you any practical experience. Therefore I was wondering if anyone would be able to give me any practical experience next season please? I know people are often reluctant to do this but I am willing to put in plenty of time befor
  15. thats a brilliant photo!!
  16. As you guys say im sure some do get lost but seems like it isnt that common if youre willing to put the effort in to get them back and arent too lazy or too unlucky!

  18. Thanks, glad to hear you found him! What depth do they usually work to? 16 foot. They are an essential in my opinion okay great thanks, yes I think it would be silly to go without one considering they are readily available!

  22. Okay great thanks, thats a good idea with the keys, is that usually successful? I guess they are all different and respond differently! haha okay, well hopefully it wont be an issue thanks!
  23. Hi all, Im new to ferreting, and looking to get some in the near future. I still live at home as im a student the only issue is that my mother will likely become very attached and see them as her pets, rather than mine which are for working. Therefore i was wondering if its common for people to lose ferrets when out working and if this is something she needs to be prepared for or if that rarely happens? (I would have a transmitter on them). Also would there working ability be at all affected if they are still treated as a non-working ferret by other members of the family? Thanks, Mat
