Thanks Deker, Because the rats were going into the disused rabbit warren I decided not to bait their ‘burrows’. Rabbits or no rabbits; I would still deliberately be putting poison into a rabbit warren. I don’t know if other people would perceive that to be a problem, but I decided it could come back to haunt me.

One more thing; I re-read the label – after Matt’s comment - which states 200g every 10m. I’ve come close to those limits, but not exceeded them.

Thanks for your comments. Slightly concerned to hear you’re ‘uneasy’ Deker. How uneasy? Uneasy enough that I should quickly take the photos down? Sorry the photos are so crap, so here’s some background info: Photo 1 is a small pit dug through leaf litter into clay soil. Photo 2 is three logs, each weighing several kg, covering the pit - I’m counting on the rats digging their way in. At the end of the treatment I was planning to scrape up the bait. I’m assuming any clay scraped up with it will dry to dust before I use the bait again. That said; now I’ve read Matt’s comment I will lin

Got an opportunity to try ditching the plastic boxes today. So how did I do – as far as you can tell from mobile phone photos? Well done? Badly done? Problems I haven’t thought about? If necessary, could I stand up in court and say, “the old guys on the THL said it looked ok to them”?

I wouldn’t know about pine martins, but there is an American lad who posts in the ferreting section, and he tames and trains up mink. ‘Minkenrey’ I think he calls it – which I know that sounds like something Jimmy Savile should be charged with - but do go and have a look; it’s very interesting.

I know a lot of the chaps on here are keen advocates of using ‘natural’ materials for trap tunnels – which I found to be good advice; thank you. What I need to know is where do you stand on using natural materials as ‘boxes’ for rat baits. I’m assuming there’s no law saying you have to use the plastic ones sold by the P.C. supply companies. But can you fashion something from a pile of bricks, logs, chicken-wire etc, and then fill it with bait? Please let me know your thoughts, thanks.

Nothing to do with moles, but this is the most ‘Unusual Catch’ I’ve had in a while. Important to say he was only in the cage trap a couple of minuets and absolutely no harm came to him, but the little sod was bloody lucky I wasn’t using fenns that day

Mate, you’re right about that; they do look very old. Dustpan and brush, invoice for a callout – job done.

Squirrels adapting by not hibernating you mean? I agree with the other lads on here, I don’t think they ever did hibernate – just slow down a bit in the cold – from what I’ve seen myself (that’s the biggest squirrel I think I’ve ever seen, by the way). That’s grey ones I’m talking about, I wouldn’t know about the red ones hibernating or not.

What the?......When did that become a legal requirement?

I caught one with a ginger arse last week, which is quite unusual.

3 Days/nights Ratting!!! Coming Soon!
Mr Muddy replied to RemyBolt's topic in General Airgun Discussion
Thanks a lot chaps, You can see why I need to ask: I don’t want to say to a client, “I’ve left my poison in the van this time. I’m going to use my rifle instead.” Only for them to say, “Great! That means I don’t have to pay you then.” Maybe I’ll try and work the airgun into jobs as sort of ‘free added extra’ on top of the traps & bait. Anyway, I seem to have hijacked Remybolt’s thread here. I hope he’s having a good enough time shooting not to mind. -

Mr Muddy replied to RemyBolt's topic in General Airgun Discussion
Thanks Joe, I agree; a well aimed shot has got to be the most humane way to control rats. Sorry, I didn’t really make my question clear enough. What I’m asking is: When you guys go shooting rats on farms, or stables, or whatever. Is it like having a ‘permission’- you shoot the rats for free, because you enjoy shooting. Or do you invoice the farm manger, like it’s a pest control job. Or is it that you have to shoot the rats if you want permission to shoot the rabbits etc. Basically, do you get paid for shooting rats? -

Mr Muddy replied to RemyBolt's topic in General Airgun Discussion
This might sound a daft question – please bear in mind I joined this forum for the Pest Control section, I know f-all about shooting: You’re shooting all these rats for nothing are you? I mean other than the joy of shooting them (which I fully understand – and good luck to you) but, do you actually get paid anything for your time? Edit: This need not be a question specifically for Remybolt. If anyone who goes shooting rats can add to my very limited understanding of airgun ownership by giving me an answer I’d greatly appreciate it. Thanks. -
Thanks again everyone. When I said ‘not expensive’ I really just meant not top-of-the-range that you have to be an expert to use properly. I don’t mind spending a few quid. But anyway: I’ve gone out and got the scope one of you guys suggested I get, and a now I’ve got a silencer too. I’ve stuck them all on my rat catcher, and it’s even more fun. My only problem is I’m going to have to wait for the rats in my garden to build their numbers back up again If I’m going to be brutally honest with myself; I think I just don’t want to be laughed at as the tw*t who turned up for a pe

Thanks Moxy, I didn’t know that about old cylinders, so that’s really interesting. I also have an old 232 15L that I was hoping to convert to a surface only as soon as get a PCP – I’m hoping that’s still possible. Since I’ve been diving (about 5 year) you can only buy – or at least get an air fill on - a 300bar tank for diving that’s fitted with a 300bar DIN. The 300 DIN’s have got a deeper thread, so it won’t even fit the DIN-to-clamp inserts. I think the reason is; if the thread on the DIN goes it will just lose air, if a clamp breaks at 300bar it will smash the back of your head in.

I do a fair bit of diving so I know a bit about this; to get a tank up to a full 300bar you do have to fill it, let it cool, top it up. Some dive centres put cylinders in a tank of cold water which helps and it’s not the same for a lower pressure 232bar fill - you can just fill them straight off. But look, don’t take my word for it, ask in the dive centre and I'd hope they say the same thing. I just want to help answer precious’s question – and I hope I’ve been some help. I don’t know about gun filling valves, and I never pretended I do, but I have bought for Godive and I’m happy with
-
One thing worth knowing is that very few dive shops can fill a tank right up to 300bar (you usually get closer to 260) unless you leave it with them to fill it, let it cool, top it up, let it cool and so on. So you might want to go for a 232bar tank which is both cheaper and lighter. Edit: best check the 232s are compatible with the valves to fill guns first though. I couldn’t tell you one way or the other I’m afraid

I recently bought a 7L 300bar for scuba diving and that godive side was the cheapest I could find a new one. The one I got sent was about 4 months old if I remember right. There’s no reason the MDE (Midland Diving Equipment) valves would ever let you down. I hope that helps.

I had been charging £45 for an easy one, but next year, with all this new hazardous-waist-disposal-form-filling-out-bullshit, I recon I could double that. For instance; my chimney sweep used to charge £25, but now he has to fill out a form so he charges £50. He just shrugs and says “f*****g government interfering in’it” and I end up agreeing with him while I hand over the cash. So f**k it, £90 for wasps it is.

Thank you all for your advice. I have googled every gun that everyone on this thread has mentioned. I do a bit of diving, so a scuba tank for a PCP won’t be a problem (although I don’t know what the valve/adapter for filling a rifle is going to cost me). One gun I do like the look of is a Walther Rotex R8 .22 – mostly because it looks like it should be a lot more expensive than it actually is (I don’t think it comes as a .25 though). I don’t know what your opinion is on that: OK for a beginner? A bit heavy perhaps? (I’m 5.5 and slowly shrinking – if that makes any difference). Again,

How high off the branch are you setting these snares?

Thanks for the advice guys, and shopping list Rez, much appreciated. Is there a sort of ‘measurement’ that describes that sort of scope I’ll need, A x B or whatever?
-
I do a bit of rat control work using traps & baits and I’ve just started with an airgun. I bought a crossman rat catcher (because of the name) and so far I’ve had a lot of fun with it, and – despite the plastic sights that keep falling off – managed to hit a fair few rats in my own garden. Now I’ve got the air gun ‘buzz’ I’d like to know what gun to look at as a next step. I freely admit I still don’t know anything about airguns so, rather than I tell you what I want, I’m happy for the experts on here to tell me what I need. The only criteria is: I want it for rat control in gard

If they’re at the bottom of your own garden you want to be reaching for the air rifle, don’t yer? Much more fun.
