Dogs throwing the towel in and breeding.
scottpenn28 replied to SheepChaser's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Definitely! Sold long before they hit the ground other than what he plans to keep back. Then those he keeps will likely be sold if they don't make the grade. Top trainer, proof in the amount of ftch's hes made up. The dogs that don't meet his standard will be more than good enough for average Joe. Anyway back to lurchers ? My opinion on breeding lurchers won't be worth much but after reading 11/12 pages of reading I may as well throw it in, somewhat unconfidently! My life with working spaniels means pedigrees have always been considered even if the sire/dam hadn't done much of anyth -

Things could have changed but when registering litter of kc wcs i bred the only condition relating to age was the dam needing to be under 8 years of age. If she was older than 8 then a different application was needed. -
Yeah ferreting definitely got to put the odds in their favour. Got plenty of nets pal, been ferreting since I was about 6, but thank you for the offer, really appreciated.

Is unfortunate as he was a cracking looking dog, and like said further up, between sire and dam, no way I could have said no to a pup!
-
Yeah, I believe out of your dog?
-
This is the thing, all the dogs I've seen for sale or swap are either great lamling dogs or great day time dogs or world class coursing dogs.....but they are being swapped or sold?!
-
Makes sense, still cant imagine giving up on the dog though based off its first season. I could imagine maybe after its second season realising it wasn't going to be as brilliant as I'd hoped but surely that's then on me to find a way to get everything I can from that dog. Be that swapping quarry as was suggested or improving stamina or simply letting it mature

This is it for me, if I can get any of my dogs near to a level that I would see as being top banana then bonus! But I can't imagine ever finding that 100% dog. I could be wrong and will obviously have once in a lifetime dogs but surely they still got their flaws. My best spaniel for example is the best dog I've had...if she's working solo, but bring a bunch of dogs and a beating line and the competition goes to her head and the ginger f****r is determined to find birds before any of the others, and I mean all the birds not just the ones in her area! But im never gonna sell her or swap her beca

Oh yeah I get that people who have been around them for years and years will pick up the subtle differences in a pup that will show their potential. But is there really that much scrap out there? If every owner was willing to put the time and effort it would there still be so many dogs not making the grade?
-
This is what I'm hoping, once she gets around them bolting she will realise she's capable of catching and hoping give her that confidence to do it
-
Hahaha, only thing mine doesn't like coming back for currently is to go back on lead. Start ferreting in few weeks so get her amongst that to start with and see how she goes
-
Cheers mate, shes very timid at the minute so hoping once get her around the rabbits she will gain some confidence

The curtain comment made me laugh! Really baffled me that lads are swapping dogs either so young of in their prime
-
Possibly easier to see due to social media but could be wrong. Shes mainly saluki x grey but got a touch of bull in her. Tbh when I was on lookout for a pup I had so many people messaging me about dogs. But the mother and father to her were just a cut above everything else I was seeing in terms of work. Different to what I was originally looking for but just couldn't turn her down

Is it only fairly recently that lurchers have become so readily available to swap and sell at older ages? Cant ever remember hearing of, or seeing this much when I was younger and my old man and uncle ran lurchers. To me a dog that is 3/4 years old would be in its prime?
-
This is brilliant. I know with every dog its a lottery, big field trialist in the spaniel world save the entire litter and then will sell off what isn't cutting the mustard but as you say, there will be some dogs that just have it and they can recognise it. But thats not to day that the other pups in the litter won't make fantastic working dogs for the average Joe given time and effort. Havent not been in this game really it has thrown me slightly how the dogs are being sold an swapped. I could understand if you kept the full litter and then sold off the pups that weren't making your grade bu

Tbh 90% of dogs i see for sale, be that pups or older dogs, all tend to have the name of what I would assume is a very well known dog thrown in as the father or at least his lines. I dont know much about coursing dogs or their names as have done a lot more work with spaniels but I can only assume these dogs were top of their game and serviced the majority of bitches around the country. By that logic it would seem that the parents are doing the stuff required....minus the obviously bad pups which occur is most litters. So my thinking is that say 75% of dogs around, sound like they have the make

Like I say I'm under the impression that any dog can improve but with dogs being sold off at a year old or 18 months, is this people not wanting to put the effort in or have they a duff pup? I cant imagine at 18 months old a dog is anywhere near its full potential
-
Hi all, My pup isn't 12 months old until January so won't be doing much at all with her this year as big believer in ruining dogs if started hard too early. Have recently seen a massive amount of lurchers for sale that are just turned a year old and even lurchers up to 5 year old for sale/swap. I'm assuming these dogs aren't making the grade that the owner wants. However from my own experience working spaniels, a spaniel may not be at its full trained potential for 4/5 years anyway. Can lurchers not be improved with training? If my lurcher doesn't have the stamina I need it to

Tried to get hold of some but no joy, vet gave me loxicam and has reduced swelling, gonna try get some metacam to keep in the first aid bag though
-
Yeah im hoping if I take it easy with her now then it will pay off for the future. Back to vets tomorrow for check but doesn't seem to be causing her any bother currently so fingers crossed!,
-
For anyone interested, just got back from vets with some anti inflammatory, no x Ray as apparently range of motion is good without pain, back to vet middle next week for another assessment. rest and small amounts of lead walking for next 6-8 weeks. Initial thought from vet was ligament damage. Thanks again all!

Cheers for the help cuys, shes booked in to vets for 5.15, will drop some ice on it until then. Hopefully get a clearer picture from vet and some anti inflammatory. Couple of months of lead walking. Hoping it will sort it and won't affect her running but from what I've read its likely to happen a lot now she's done it once. Thanks again all!
