  1. Yeah I think I would prefer something a bit bigger tbh, and I think I wouldnt be happy unless it had some collie in it
  2. Originally it was going to be kept outside in kennel and they didn't like that idea either, but because my spaniels are in the house and always have been the Mrs wont let me put lurcher outside, which tbh more than happy to have it in the house. Know what you mean though, guess there are too many unknowns with a rescue for them to allow that risk
  3. I think that's what I'm going to be doing, literally contacting everyone with an advert of a cross I like the idea of and go from there and hope for the best.
  4. I had looked at beddlington whippets and do like the idea of 1, like you say being short legged suggest they reach full speed quicker over short distance, have looked at whippets but even no pedigree ones are far out of my budget in the current climate if im honest
  5. Yeah this was point, knew it would be a game of chance and like I said no pedigree means you have no idea what your buying really. But in the same respect just because a dogs got a decent pedigree doesnt mean its going to be anything like the parents or grandparents, I know of spaniels that come from ftch pedigrees but won't pick up birds so always a chance I guess. Not expecting for people to just say come along and have a watch by any means but the people selling dogs after 5 minutes of owning them make me very cautious
  6. There is a place not far from me but won't accept me because of small child in the house
  7. Younger dogs isn't a problem, would just have to be right circumstances
  8. Yeah have been keeping a check on them but like you say, I imagined many of the owners won't be putting theirs dogs into pup thus time of year
  9. We have a few lurcher rescue spots near me but none will entertain me rehoming one as I have a small child
  10. Am not particularly fussed on the mix, lurcher to lurcher would be fine, trouble im having is where to look, my spaniel has a decent pedigree so I know straight away her parents were both decent working dogs and was also able to watch the mother to her working before I agreed to buy. With knowing almost nobody with lurchers im cautious about buying from classifieds as there is no way of knowing what your getting. Guess I could just be overthinking and worrying about nothing
  11. Ideally but would consider older depending on how old
  12. I looked to rehome a lurcher years ago and as soon as I mentioned working her they flat out refused (wasn't aware they didn't like that idea when I was chatting to them)
  13. Ideally would want something that I could lamp and ferret with. No interest in running teeth or bigger just rabbits. Only real experience I've had with lurchers were my dads years ago, mostly being some sort of collie cross. He had a bearded collie x greyhound (possibly also a slight bit of deerhound but not 100%) which was an absolute machine at running rabbits but unbelievably soft around people. Used to go ferreting with a few lads who previously owned beddlington whippets and im a fan of them but not sure what they were like just on the lamp. if I had to choose id like something with a bit
  14. Have been keeping an eye out but they won't allow me to rehome a dog as I have a young child
  15. Yeah have been seeing dogs every 5 minutes for sale but my opinion is people rarely sell good dogs and I cant justify spending what pups are costing currently so will certainly be waiting for the right pup to come along. People cashing in on covid and now the charities are getting overrun with unwanted dogs. Hoping I can meet or speak with a few dog men who could eventually point me in a decent direction
  16. Yeah completely agree with that, rarely post photos of my spaniel or photos my days out because you never know who is watching. Am also super awkward with who I go ferreting/shooting with because it only takes a couple of people to spread the word. Other folks are certainly the same because of not trusting people, especially strangers so almost impossible haha
  17. Hi all, may well be stupid question but looking for some advice. My dad ran lurchers for many years when I was younger and before I was born my uncle and grandad also both ran lurchers. Used to absolutely love lamping with dad when I was a boy but the opportunity never really presented itself to me when I was younger to get a lurcher of my own. My dad hasn't owned a lurcher for probably 15 years and my uncle for probably 30. Now I have a son of my own id like give him the opportunity to be a part of this sport. I have ferrets, shotguns, rifles and spaniels but always had a soft spo
  18. Absolutely agree that the smaller dogs are around and so common for a reason, no doubts at all they still bash bramble and flush birds just as well as more heavy set type and being of a smaller stature no doubts they do it all much quicker. However regardless of trend or fashion or whatever else my original post stated that I had this type of dog when I was younger and that to me is what an ESS is, not saying in any way that the smaller type dogs aren't proper ESS but my personal preference is heavy springers that my family had when we were kids. There are springers in my area that are these b
  19. Funnily enough somebody had suggested this article to me so had a read and this is what I'm looking for
  20. I have no doubt they will do everything and more I require, just personal preference that I'd like a bigger "old type" like the springers i used to have. The sire to my wcs is a sugarbullet gundog and I personally really like that line. Poolgreen really speaks for itself since Will Clulee has trained so many champion dogs if he had the type of springer I wanted id absolutely be trying to contact him. Same with sugarbullet also, but both are trialling men and have smaller type springers. I've recently been in contact with a couple of breeders and have been pointed towards SJworkingdogs and gren
  21. Yeah hopefully, good luck with your litter!
  22. I have had people suggest to me i should look at sprockers but simply never had the opportunity to see one work, I know what you mean about papers, know people with fantastic dogs on paper but not a clue when in the field. The Mrs has been trying to persuade me to cover my cocker bitch with a springer and keep a sprocker back for myself but I bred her back last year, Mrs wanted a cocker of her own to work so I let her fully choose and have full say over the pup we kept, she chose her dog and then 6 months later didnt have the time to train it, by that time the pup I would have kept was long go
  23. I have considered sprockers before in the hope of getting the best of both breeds but never really got anywhere with it, especially now with the prices of dogs seemingly getting higher by the day, seems crazy to be paying over £1000 for essentially a mixed breed (even though people have been for years with the likes of French bulldogs) another reason being I literally know 0 people with a sprocker
  24. I know what you mean, my cocker will go all day through bramble and anything else in her way then still have energy to bounce off the walls when we get home, im already guessing to find a heavy springer is leaving me very limited as most top bred dogs are for trialling and they want them quick and nimble generally seeming to be smaller and slimmer. If I do have to start looking at smaller type then I will but not until I've exhausted myself looking for heavy type
