  1. Tbh, when she is on the chase she seems to be giving it her all and going flat out to make the catch, just won't do the final part of making the catch, she gets her head down to rabbit level and everything just no grabbing it. I'm gonna give chase myself too this year as your not the first person to mention that. Hopefully we can find some nice young rabbits out in the field and give it q good try again ?
  2. Definitely old enough to run, nearly 2 years old ? I'm hoping it's just a confidence thing and with the playing around this year with no real stress or importance on learning anything, fingers crossed she will be more confident. I try not to be disheartened after her failure to catch but at same time I'm reluctant to praise her too much in case she thinks it's a good things she's just chasing a rabbit in circles before she let's it go gone.
  3. I like the idea of going off grid for a week and eating only what we catch....unfortunately I think we both might resort to eating grass if previous success is anything to go by ?
  4. Yeah we've spent the off season just trying to enjoy it, no training, relaxing and not doing much of anything, I will give her a go with the lamp when we get the night this season and see how she goes, gonna try go into this season with no expectations and if she does manage a catch then bonus, if not again just try take it easy and be patient with her
  5. Thank you, I really appreciate the offer and will be sure to get in touch ?
  6. Yeah would have been ideal but oh well, me and her will be flying solo again this year and fingers crossed with some more success ?
  7. Yeah I'm pretty sure know where I've gone wrong, the whole idea of this post was to see if there was any way to teach her to strike as all we've really done rigs year is play around trying to build her confidence back up. Thanks ?
  8. The same training method I did with the spaniels, basic command and then reinforcing the rules and commands I set, if a command was ignored then I got on her straight away with a firm telling off so she understood she was wrong, this I believe has somewhat shattered her confidence in herself. It never affected the spaniels I've trained but I think she's is possibly too fragile of mind for how I trained her. Looking back and speaking to a good lad about it I've now spent the time since last season trying to really increase her confidence. She got chased by a German shepherd as a pup which is wh
  9. Yeah I'd be sceptical too with randomer asking me, wasn't expecting anybody to join me for a run/watching their dog but if I think could benefit my dog then least I can do is ask and try. Like I said before on my posts, I'll do whatever I can and whatever is best for the dog to make her as successful as I can. I respect you posting that though, certainly a time to be wary. ?
  10. Mainly small grass or planted fields, but some paddocks and arable land too, arable fields are decent size but the rabbits rarely venture too far from hedge so yeah I'd say typically the runs are short
  11. That how we spent most of last season. Thanks ?
  12. I wont be giving up on her just really want her to succeed, me wanting her to do well so badly is probably one of the reasons she's probably not where I had hoped she would be at this point but we live and learn. Most of my ground is arable densely planted so can certainly be challenging. Definitely big learning curve for her. Cheers.
  13. We have very small numbers on majority of ours but some places seem to have done very well this year and can hopefully produce some decent bags this season. Sent you a pm mate ?
  14. Just made it difficult last season when tried to run her along with another dog, she chased for a bit and then let the other dog take over and make the catch whilst she stood watching but not wanting to get involved
  15. I'll definitely be going on my own hopefully can meet the lads I know at some point in season. Her temperament seemed to change after her first season so was hoping that changed her attitude but like i say still a wimp around other dogs so maybe not. Hearing that about yours has given me some hope though pal, hopefully she comes good this season ?
  16. That's my hope, if I can get her out with another dog at least a few times then fingers crossed things will click and she will realise what's she's supposed to do, was hoping someone local might wanna go for a spin but it looks like I'll be traveling. Really not ready to give up on this dog yet ?
  17. She will chase lovely just not grab it. Hopefully can get her out with the ferrets a lot more this year though which fingers crossed will encourage her
  18. Yeah would be ideal to let her watch some older dogs but like said in post, dont know people local who run dogs, to go with lads I do know isn't possible more than couple of times a season
  19. We've got ferrets but hardly managed to get out last year with them due to thin numbers but have some new ground this year and looks like could be a better season for ferreting. Was told to run after it myself so will definitely try that this year, yeah not worried about finesse as such just want to be absolutely prepared this year so at least I've done everything I can to get her catching
  20. Title pretty much says it all, last season was my first with the lurcher and things obviously didn't go to plan, I've posted about it before so don't want to go into too much detail but basically seems she doesn't want to actually strike or commit to the catch. This I believe is because of how I trained her, so this year I've been doing everything I can to get her in the right shape and right frame of mind in the hope she breaks her duck this season. Playing with flirt pole, giving her dead rabbits so she's used to fur in her mouth. No interest in balls or dummies so can't really play "fetch"
  21. Good insight, I know not everyone would rub down or warm up just seems that would be the perfect scenario. With regard to the dogs being in and out the motor week in, week out, clearly they did the graft that was asked of them and did it for a decent amount of time, but do you think they would have ran better, or gained more years by warming up and warming down correctly? Injuries will always happen, even the best athletes get injured.
  22. Sounds like the stretching and massaging definitely helped him then! Will look into dog stretching and start from now I think given what everyone is saying. Thanks ?
  23. Definitely going to start rubbing her down after exercise, from what you guys have said its the way to go. Tbh she's a nightmare with her toes since she injured them, luckily will let you cut them but only when she totally shattered, otherwise she jumps a mile and runs away. Polar opposite to spaniel who loves a good grooming. Cheers ?
  24. Definitely not talking a match! Just trying to make sure I do everything I can to ensure she's in best possible shape come season, I'm definitely still learning.
