Hi there. As I'm writing this I'm trying to feeds Spaniels so I appoligise for any spelling mishaps. Before I start I'm writing this for a mate of mine I'm not into the whole running dog thing like I said I'm a spaniel man. Right the problem is that like the title states my mate has a Collie X Whippet. She's 8 months old and she basically does what she wants when she wants. She knows commands like SIT but will only do it if you have something she wants! (e.g.) food. We do take her out ferreting and that but still will not listen and for the last few outings has remained teathered up du

what pitch whistle for my chesapeake bay retriever?
Sy118 replied to ANTHONYCHEZ's topic in Gundogs & Retrievers
I've got an acme 210.5 for my spaniels works a treat. I was using an adjustable pitch from pets at home but the adjuster kept moving which was confusing the pups. -
Thanks for the tips I've found little but often is the key the pups loose intrest after a while. I've also been looking into getting dave lissets DVDs

Nice. Must be the time of year to get permission me and my mate have at least 1000 acres in the start of January after the farmers last shoot of the season. Really looking forward to it. Good luck mate.

My partner has got me a spaniel training book for Xmas so only a week to wait. I've had them out to day on a lead making them wait for a short period of time before I took them off to retrieve the dummy. It worked for my springer but not for my cocker. But I've always known and been told by a few gun dog owners that cockers are a little harder to train. Thanks for the other advice that's the sort of thing I've been looking for. I will keep that in mind for tomorrows training lesson. I'm hoping to get a bit of ferreting in on Sunday so I can wrap my dummy in rabbit fur so they get the smell.

I took my 3 month old Cocker spaniel about 3 week ago just to show him the ropes.

Hi. I posted a comment on someone's post yesterday it was about training retrivers and i asked for some tips on training. The chaps i was talking to gave me some great advice. (thanks very much). So today i went out a brought a 1/2 pound dummy, 210 1/2 whistle and two rope leads. I've been training my pups on a whistle for a while now just getting them to return to me and sit but the whistle i was using was one of thoses adjustable ones from pets at home. my pups are quite good on the whistle so i thought i'd get them a half decent one. Anyway for those of you that don't know me I h

Running in is really annoying and potentially dangerous. It's especially annoying when somebody else's dog runs in on your dog's retrieve. Keep them on a lead while you throw the dummy. If they lunge forward they'll get a nasty shock when the reach the end of the rope! Once they're sitting again slowly remove the lead while repeating the command "stay", if they move grab 'em. Hold them there with your voice and hand signal until you feel comfortable letting the dog have the retrieve. Having a mate throw the dummy is also good as he can grab the dummy if the dog runs in thus denying th

I use tescos finest £6 just to keep my hands warm when we stand around waiting. We know when we've had a good days ferreting when our hands have been stung in several different places.

Nice work..... I've got my spaniels retreaving a ball to hand my Springer is 14 weeks and my Cocker is 15 weeks they return a ball 9 out of 10 times I'm just struggling to get them to wait and go on my command. ( so if you have any good advice please do tell ). Oh yea I do use a whistle and they have two commands 1. Come 2. To sit but they will run back and sit ( not to sure if that's a good thing but it works ). Again nice work. Si

Wow.... Some Beautifull spaniels you guys have. Here's mine. Bramble ESS 15 weeks and Thistle CS 16 weeks. These two are my first retrievers. -
Can you put up a picture or tell me how to get to it please mate as I'm still quite new to this site. Thanks Si

Thanks for the in-put chap much appreciated. You've all put my mind at ease. Mickey your springer looks stunning I can't wait to get my two working. Not to sure how old they should be before they should start to come out with us but I've read that spaniels in particular learn very quick at a young age in the first 3-4 months.

Hi..... I have just brought two Spaniels one Springer and one Cocker. I wanted a working intelligent dogs but a terrier or a whippet or X was out the question as my missus isn't too keen on that sort of breed of dog and my house isn't big enough for any thing like a fully grown labs. I've had people tell me that they will not be any good for ferreting? I really hope this is not the case as I have real high expectations fir them both although the cocker is proving harder to train than the springer but it's early days yet. Does anyone else use or have used Spaniels for ferreting? (and be

Looking for ferreting permission in Lincolnshire.
Sy118 replied to Sy118's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
Any reason why you cant/dont want to go back to farms you've worked on before? Y.I.S Leeview No I think I could of explained my self a little bit better here my apologies. What it is that I used to work in agriculture slug pelleting, weed spraying, avedexing you no the stuff that farmers don't want to do or haven't got the time to do. So what I did was today and the last few days ive been to most of the farmers farm that I've worked for in the past and asked them for some ferreting permission. The problem is and like I said in my new comers thread is that we are new to ferreting th -

Yes I know that was just 5 farms today I'm back out on Wednesday looking for more if time will let me. I will keep looking with out a doubt. I've never took dogs with me to ask for permission I've left them at home or in the car. I've always made my intentions clear as to was I want to do as well. I used to work on the land slug pelleting so I've have had experience with rude and obnoxious farmers and like you say be polite that is the key to getting things done. I just hope I manage to get some permission this season. I don't expect it to be a walk in the park that's for sure. But I'm struggl -
Hi there. As the title says me and a friend of mine are look for some permission in Lincolnshire. This seems to an impossible feet no one in this county seems to want to give it. I've been out this morning and went to see 5 different farms 2 said they will get back to me and the rest well told me where to go! Am I doing something wrong? I've tryed to approach farm managers diarectly and also tryed to show my face and explain what I want to do. Please help I'm open to ideas. Many thanks Simon.
