Hi lads as title says do any of you shoot and keep lurchers ? After a long period of thought I settled on a ess pup as mainly rough shooting where I am there is plenty of work for the lurchers between rabbits and foxes so the lurchers are worked at least twice a week just wondering do any of ye work ur lurchers alongside your gun dogs I have a little bushing terrier so was wondering in your opinions should I keep them separate or train ess pup to work alongside the lurchers too I would still want ess to do her job on days I go shooting so essentially I'm wondering will me working her or traini

Whippets certainly not natural born retrievers!!!
alcamy22 replied to bigbailey's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
My whippet retrieved from the off as a pup I trained him with tennis ball or dummy and he smashes squatters just as well as moving prey some folk think it depends how you entered them if his first dozen or so were on the run as soon as lamp was on he mite only associate moving prey as a target but remember a whippet is just a small running dog and so would have very different natural behaviour patterns to a lab my whippet wouldn't show much interest in prey that is already dead though and would only carry dead animals at a push if my hands were full unlike a lab or other gun dog that will do i -
sorry to hear that bud

this is half the reason rspca have so many lurchers circumstances very rarely change so drastically to warrant getting rid of a dog should never have taken her on in the first place if you give her away itll be her third home in less than a year not the best of starts in life for a working dog. lurchers as a general irrespective of cross are very loyal. As generally i know i do proper dog men spend more time with dogs, in field, pen shed than with the wife if you do get rid of her dont bother getting another dog get a goldfish that wont challenge you to, too much responsability
