Hi all from a newbie to this site
predatorman replied to busman-pete's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
sounds like you're doing fine to me! i use rope or a leather lead with the handle picked out for slip leads. i find just threading the slip under the collar (under and up towards the dogs head) is best as you should'nt get a tangle on release if the dog is getting over excited. also, dont pull the sliplead out quickly, just release one end and the dog will feel the pressure ease and know to lurch forward to the prey. i used to go out with someone who used to really whip the slip out quickly and his young dog sometimes used to cower as though it had done something wrong! best of luck -
beta puppy with powdered calves milk. add hot water and stand until warm. i never had any bone/teeth problems with this mix

keep it going bigash, its all part of building the trust between you and your dog. if you can guarantee a run everytime you slip the dog, it'l soon run the beam before it see's the quarry, gaining valuable ground. i dont think it will be long before we hear of the fruits of your efforts! keep us posted mate. best of luck

a thought provoking and sensible reply skinny. i can understand the points you are getting across, i just feel that someone on this forum could have given this dog a chance but did'nt have the option. our island has various farming landscape and surely someone on here with a large acreage of livestock free permission could have stepped in. the potential new owner would have known the trait of this dog beforehand and if fancied the task, could have at least tried. its all too late now anyhow so maybe best we all move on. i still think a poll would be interesting! atb

Oh come on skinny! sure not all dogs can be broken to livestock but some can. this dog never had a chance! it was paraded to the public on this forum, not offered for rehoming and executed before anyone could step in, probably to boost his no nonsense profile! it backfired with the negative comments he was getting, probably from experienced dogmen who may have sorted the problem and he said at one point that he was going to make no more comments on the subject. this thread would have then blown over and died out. then what happens? he decides to bait the thread with another story, ridiculing w

milo, do yourself a favour and start a new account under a different name, no-one takes your ramblings serious anymore, you lost all credability when you culled a healthy, breakable dog when it was convenient for you. probably with an air-rifle in your garden (dog can go in the brown wheelie bin). your pathetic.

fine looking dog that mate

i think had milo brought this bitch up from a pup, had it lead trained and taught to jump, it would have had a 2nd chance after more strict training. how much is a muzzle to buy to put your mind at rest? it'l teach you to get in dogs you have'nt bonded with, get them from pup, only yourself to blame. with a few more hunting years under your belt you will realise you were too hasty in your decision to have the bitch pts.what a shame

have you tried running her doubled up? i know its not ideal for two dogs on one rabbit in the lamp but even if she wont run out of jealousy, she could 'run for fun' with the other dog thus teaching her what the job entails and the praise involved in the dog presenting a catch to you. i dont think its too late to get her fired up but you are running out of time mate. best of luck

i look for around 22 to 24 tts, purely because i like a shorter coupled dog for tighter turning which slows the race down allowing the quarry to be worked tighter. the dog needs early pace though to engage the race, good dogs can shift up and down the gears to make it look easy. i've seen on many occasions leverets make taller dogs look like ten bobs worth because they simply were'nt agile enough to pick them up!
-
my dog lucky man, he's a belter aint he? how old and what height tts?
-
thats better ruby jet, another fine example of a bullx
-
briggs pup is a cracker, just what i'd look for in one. ruby jet, i like the coat and markings on your pup, a pic from the side veiw would do its conformation more justice mate. nice pups

keep your subaru on the road and slip single handed, then you will find out if YOU are running shite lol!

Shud Young Coursing Dogs Be Lamped?
predatorman replied to livin-it-up-08's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
31/2 months, mine are proven at that age ready for breeding and nearly hitting retirement status Thought that myself mate, if they ain't providing by 3 and a half days..... they're a gonna...... I have never heard so much shit in all my loife 31/2 months you people now about dogs or what running a dog at that age damages the development of the organs for running and stamina(Heart and Lungs)i promise you running a dog from this age will not result in a good coursing lamping or walking dog. i've never heard in 25 years of working dogs where a pup's heart and lungs were damaged as -

you lamped from 3 and a half month u make me sick pal  poor dog here we go all the shity remarks keep them coming my dog is in good nick and good for his age so wats it got to do with you many moons ago i lamped two 4 month old pups and the bitch ended up the best lamper i,ve had. she died at 11 years old of cancer and was active in the field until 9 year old. little and often doesnt hurt them from a young age! p.s the other pup went on to be another fine dog, retireing at 10 year old. -
i didnt realise you had tried only asking for ferreting, my mistake. looks like you may have the key when you say you will have to try further afield, the further in the sticks the better.where i live, anywhere within 10 mile is a waste of time due to the hassle of towny poachers tearing fields up on a night and theiving along the way. tell landowners that you let them and the police farmwatch scheme know when you go out so they dont get the knock at 3am, it all adds up.once you get the first bit of land, even one field in the sticks, the rest will come easy. one other thing i used to do is no

forgot to add, crazycraig said HARES, not hare lol!
-
i'm a bullxgrey man myself but i would'nt kid myself that its the best type for hare coursing! the whippetxgrey is has all you need for speed and to subdue a hare in small fields. the salukixgrey has all you need for the big open fields where stamina is the key. sure, you may get your fair share of hares mate up until xmas but when the hares get fit in jan/feb your dogs arse may collapse after the third field! the bullcross is too heavily built in ratio to its stride to sustain the gruelling run a fit hare can give it. hundreds of longdog matchmen cant be wrong, and i arent one of them!

tricky one this! has he had a collision with a hedge in the dark? or are you giving him some slips where the rabbit can make safety without the dog putting a bend in it? seems strange the dog is giving up mid race. my advice? shut the dog off for a couple of weeks to get him keen again and only give the dog a slip when you can virtually guarantee the dog putting a bend in the quarry. sounds like the dogs either wary of the hedge or sickened with bad slips. if the rabbit is coming towards you and the dog is behind it, try dipping the beam of light in front of the rabbit, you could be blinding t

medium and large fields; saluki x greyhound small fields and paddocks; whippet x greyhound just my opinion based on if the dog misses the first strike!
-
i think you need a soft approach first off mate. just ask for the ferreting only to get your foot in the door.(you can take the dog later and leave a few holes un-netted!) in time the land owner will grow to trust you and give you more options with the dog. asking for lamping permission just asks for the door to be slammed everytime. if they dont know you from adam, how can he believe the dogs stockbroken etc? things get stolen under cover of darkness so i'd put the lamp on hold until theres a bit of trust between yourself and the potential landowner. this worked for me and after a couple of y

it can certainly improve the art of striking at a young age as some dogs get few chances during the day when just getting to and staying with the quarry is a tall enough order for a pup.
