The missus bought me a loden one last Christmas - I think from either Bush Wear or Black Wolf. It's great. Buckles need a bit of cord around them to stop them jangling, but the material is strong and doesn't rustle. It will carry a good sized roe, or a CWD or two muntjac (bloody heavy with 2 munties, I can tell you). Wouldn't stalk without one now.

Good shooting - well done

Richard Prior's Roe Deer: Management and Stalking is pretty good; and go out on a few accompanied stalks with an experienced local stalker and you will learn a lot in just a few days. Good luck.

There's one better place than the freezer, and that's cooked on the plate! Just in the process of helping some muntjac ribs make the transition from freezer to plate - marinading in maple syrup, soy sauce and chilli.

Great read and good shooting.

Yes, Martin, the two bucks I shot last week were moving in the same direction in close proximity. One I'd guess was a two year old and the other a yearling. Shot first buck, and the other buck appeared within minutes coming from tthe same cover that the first had been in. So close together they must have tolerated each other for some reason and no sound or sign of fighting or threat behaviour. Both very relaxed.

how the hell do you shrink pics so you can upload them
Gimli replied to langouroux's topic in Deer Stalking & Management
I use Microsoft Picture Manager. Upload the picture into picture manager, go on to the Picture file at the top and choose the Compress function. That will do it for you. -
Christened the new highseat...............
Gimli replied to martin's topic in Deer Stalking & Management
great post and well done. I'm going green with envy though that you've got a high seat within ten minutes from where you live. Lucky man. Good hunting from the seat! -
How did you guess. It was that or rest the gun on the top of the gate and shoot. But sense prevailed and that buck lived another day - as I'd guess by the antlers it was an older one than the two I shot. After the first few hours of not seeing anything else, I began to regret my restraint, but then clearly virtue has its own rewards!

Thanks guys. I like writing up the shoots almost as much as the stalking and am really pleased when you enjoy them. I tell a good story over a pint too - my missus says I don't need to shoot deer, I could talk them to death!

I ws too lazy to get up for a dawn stalk today. I'd thought about it but couldn't quite drag myself out of bed at 4.30. So I got up at seven, had a coffee and set off. the traffixc around north Watford was a swine and it took me ages, or so it seemed, to get out on the A41 ti Tring. Once on the road it was plain sailing. In less than 20 minutes I was stopping the X-trail by the gate to the woods. As I cut the motor I looked down the track into the wood and not 40 yards from the gate was a muntjac buck calmly feeding in full sight. It didn't seem bothered by the car. I got out and i

Don't be ashamed. You hit with both shots and he went down. He might only have gone a few yards after your first shot, but you sensibly and humanely killed him with a second. You now have a fine buck and a good number of really good cuts of venision. Well done and good hunting.

Not been deer stalking there but it ranks among the most unappealing, rough and generally unfriendly towns I've been to. I'd agree with Andy's comment - the English are not popular. The pubs are basically boxing rings with a bar. I stayed in a cotttage near there on holiday. Saw lots of wild Roe Deer, especially in strips of woodland or thick reeds along the loch shore.

Good shooting - sounds a great joint for Sunday dinner!

Apply for your .243 FAC, take some shooting lessons at a decent range with a .243; get your mate with the open licence and DSC 1&2 to agree to be mentor for you and suggest this to the police. I did something similar and got the licence v fast, with the provision that I had to be mentored. In two months, I was proficient enough that my mentor wrote to the police and I know shoot unsupervised on any land where I have permission and which has been cleared for shooting by the police. Good luck

Replacing my 22 rimfire - advice need
Gimli replied to Gimli's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Thanks - that's convinced me. If it's as reliable as my Remmy700 243, then it must be good. -
Hi guys and gals, I'm thinking about trading in my old Brno .22 rimfire, asking police for a variation and getting a Ruger 10/22. I've fired one once, at a range, and loved it. But is it as good field rifle for rabbits - accurate, reliable. Any advice gratefully received. Thanks

Great shooting and what a way to start the day - the dawn chorus, a beautiful doe and home for breakfast by eight!

8 - that's good going, but must have set yoou back a few quid!

The mod was one put together by the gunsmith who works for the gun dealer I bought the remmy from. It is quite long and slightly front-heavy but I'bve found it shoots v well. So far five shots at five deer (max range the one y'day at 137 yards) and five clean kills. Hope this holds up - wish I had as good a record with my 12 bore when I'm pigeon shooting!

The basic stalking fee was good - £50 but then £150 for shooting a cull buck.

All of you who told me I'd get a completely new experience stalking CWD were dead right - what a day! The day actually started badly - I've got a horrrible feeling I triggered a speed camera going through a grotty in dustrial estate area between Luton and Dunstable. let's hope not. Arrived at the stalker's place north of Aylesbury on time and he showed me some of the heads he'd got game shooting in Africa - a fantastic gemsbok, a good kudu skull and even a baboon. Then off to the estate. We transferred from a 4x4 to a quad bike as the field margins were very wet and the estate o

In a couple of weeks' time I'm off for my first shot (if I'm lucky) at stalking CWD up in Bedfordshire. I'm addicted. How did I exist pre-stalking?

A cold and icy morning in Hertfordshire. Although it hasn't snowed for a few days, most of the fields and woods near Tring were still under a cruncht white blanket. The backroads to the wood where I have stalking rights were a still v icy and treacherous. When I got to the wood I was surprised none of the snow had melted and that no one had been in on the track by car or on foot since the last snow fell. I made my way to the high seat - noting a mass of roe and muntjac slots in the snow and a few piles of droppings. As I'd been lazy and stayed in bed too late, I wasn't there for da

Thanks guys - a great day out. Butchered the doe y'day. With the bones in some of the cuts still, I got 14 KG of meat. Cooked venison ribs wih chilli and maple syrup sauce and coconut rice last night. Delicious with a good bottle of Oz Shiraz. Happy New Year.
