Deben Mk3 Terrier Collar Wanted
Mudcat replied to whitehackle's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
Whitehackle, Nice looking bird in your avatar! Mudcat -
Lee, I would try and start with the most solid foundation I could find. Not starting with a good worker foundation, in my opinion, will eventually rear its ugly head down the line. I am talking about breeding a working dog. It takes a year or more of time to wait on a young dog to start and longer to see how the pup progresses. You might as well start off with the absolute best prospect you can put your hands on. Life is short. Mudcat

It's a small terrier used on woodchuck, possum and coon here in the states. They also use them in the eastern states on grey fox in the mountain area. They range from 7 to 15lbs and have a varied working style. They are a handy size for groundhogs! They have a little bit of this and that in their blood. Mudcat

Sometimes they will chuck on down to about 10' in our most complex area of earths. I like the 2 and 3 footers! Averaging all of our digs together, we would average about 3 1/2 to 4 feet deep. Mudcat

Pinava and I got together for a couple of days of chuck digging and we had a blast. I got hooked up with Pinava through this board and he is a super nice guy and was a great help to us at the digs. This was his first real digging outing, so I hope we made a good impression on him. We dug 3 chucks and a possum and dug some dogs that were a little to big for chucks. He got to see some Patterdales work as well as my little den terrier. Below is a pic of Glitter my best den terrier, after she had bottled up a chuck. Pinava was introduced to Mr. Backfill and he handled the job with a smile!

Hope you have a good and safe season! Mudcat -
It would have been close to 20 I believe, but it was still a big one for us. They will face the dog and turn away and dig as well. Also, we watched one take his front feet and constantly push up dirt in front of him to try to seal himself off. One well known terrierman from your side of the pond told me that they were his least favorite quarry to dig. He said you needed a small dog with strong prey drive to get to the quarry quickly to keep it from digging away. A lot of bigger terriers get hung up in the turns. By the time you dig down to him, the chuck has dug away. The coons we dig

Yes on in the same. Mudcat

Yes, I like the international flavor of this board! We were all guessing his weight and put him in the crate in a shade so we could weigh him later on certified scales at my workplace up the road. We got on another chuck and when we got back he had pushed the door off and was gone. I seen him later but he was denning underneath a live railroad so I just watched him and tried to catch him away from that den but never could. Mudcat

This one is the biggest one we ever got! But the norm is much smaller. Mudcat

They can squeeze into some tight places for sure. They are fun to dig, because they can dig away from you in the right conditions and the terrier has to learn to deal with the back fill. We were digging a chuck once and my buddy said he thought the chuck had turned upwards. Shortly after that, he said, "I thought I seen the ground move", and about that time up popped a chuck. I have had that happen one other time as well. It was not deep digs only 2 to 3 feet. Mudcat

Yep! Mighty fine gear! Mudcat

The digging tools that we use the most. The tools do not look like that now. Do not use the root cutter anymore as we have found a better way to deal with the roots. Mudcat

Here is my small female Patterdale after a nice job on a chuck. Chuck was relocated. Mudcat

Hey foxdropper, He does wear them quite a lot up here. We hunt small and large streams in the late fall and winter and he usually goes down the middle while I stay on the bank. We have had several digs that requires one of us to be standing in the water. He does not mind wearing them, so I let him be the frogman. Mudcat

I would have to eventually let him out and I'm not sure the pleasure would have been worth the pain when he got out. Mudcat

I am located in the southern US. Mudcat

Chic is about 11lbs and in the pic she is in a tight earth on a chuck. I need a small terrier to really work these southern chucks properly. Wanted you guys to see how tight these chuck holes can be.

My buddy is a good backup for the terriers! Mudcat
