Great mix of corvids there. The young rape is drawing them in round here at the moment.. the pigeons that it.

Fair play Jok - they obviously went to a good home as that's a tidy job there for sure. The gent that's for should be very well pleased with it. Nice one.

You did well mate. Knowing where to look and taking the chances as they come. Nice to see the quad pulling its weight.

It was not more that 20m from when it was hit and I was out the seat straight away looking for it. So frustrating.

Nice haul, lot of molehills on sheep pasture round here, don't know why they are not dealing with them.
Its heaving with them round here as well mate although this dry spell has reduced my catch rates..

Last Saturday evening - I'd been up well before dawn and after walking for miles and seen feck-all (on my permission anyway) decided to spend the last 2 hours of daylight sat in a high seat set in 12 acres of divine sitka spruce permission that was part of a 300 acre block. It was both cold and windy so being sat on my arse in the highseat and before long I was absolutely freezing my nuts off.
Some total bell-ends had decided to spend the evening pretending to be Ray Mears or Bear Grylls and were 150 meters away on the neighbours permission with a roaring fire and trying to break more firewood so moral and expectations were low to say the least!
Maybe ten / fifteen minute of shootable light left - like a mirage, a group of sika approach from my left. The adult hind was easy to spot so, selecting an obvious calf as soon as it was clear BOOM.... thump. followed by deer running every-which-way. I followed my hind calf the few yards that she was visible to gauge her general direction and then was distracted by as following group that stopped in the same spot. There happened to be another calf in this group so, going for a straight pin-shot, I dropper her on the spot.
The first strike had been on in an area of rushy grass on a ride of woodland and try as a might in the half-light I couldn't find the strike spot. I spent an hour, well past darkness, looking with a decent torch and eventually gave up.
I was back at dawn the next day to follow up and was PISSED to see that something had got there first. I must have walked past it a dozen times but it was invisible in the ditch if collapsed into... I really must get a dog!

Naturally I want my little lad to enjoy hunting, trapping and fishing like I do but haven't wanted to press it on him, besides.... he's only just turned 4! Anyway, he's insisted on tagging along on a recent visit to a farm where I've got some mole traps down (much to his mums annoyance) and so he jumped in the Landrover.
He's seen plenty of dead deer & rabbits in my chiller before so I wasn't worried about his reaction to things - that said I wasn't expecting him to get so stuck in with pointing out the sprung traps, helping to carefully pull them up and then handling the catch - he loved it. Not only was he great company but he made me really proud.

You've done a lovely job preparing that pigeon.

I'll bet the twenty minute wait doesn't seem that long with company like that either. Also very reassuring knowing you've got the follow up covered and a chance of another in the meantime. This time next year maybe I'll be allowed a dog...

Bravado and bullshit in spades... Almost like watching reality TV when someone's making a total prick out themselves and doesn't realise it. Some of the replies on here are embarrassing to read.
If this lad can find a way to help the true custodians of the countryside preserve it and keep at bay the selfish, theiving pricks that rob their 'sport' and are too lazy to earn it he's got my full support. When poachers guns / vehicles are seized and their dogs destroyed maybe the penny will drop and they'll realise that actions have consequences.
We'll see how tough they all talk then.

Great as always sir! I'm certainly not making the most of this crisp dry weather!

Great post rich - making up for lost time on the cull while the weather holds.
As for the shop.... what you lack in experience you can no doubt make up for with enthusiasm?

46kg seems plenty big enough on your Tod mate - nice going and a lovely buck. A bit of sweat and toil adds to the sense of achievement...

Fair play Mik - nice clean job there.

I think it was secretagentmole or similar that put up a pigeon pie recipe which involved simmering the carcass for a fair old while then taking the flesh off and that worked a treat and the meat did fall off after few hours simmer. I can't find the link at the moment
Just found this in me favorites mmmmm

That takes me back Terry!

You had to be there really - it looked like it would drop any second and as he was obviously on his way down I didn't want to give it any reason for the adrenaline to kick in... especially as it was pushing 300m by this point. There was also livestock in he vicinity to worry about so not as cut and dry as it was described.

Love widgeon... one of the few wild bids I'd bother plucking. Enjoy!

The heaviest this day was about 54kg although I can imagine them going bigger at the start of the rut. The next largest went 50 with the others around 45kg and the pricket only 25.

Fantastic mate - absolutely fantastic. That second stalk sounds like it had the perfect mix of effort, adrenaline, skill and reward.... if Carling made stalks... and what a Great Wall hanger.
-
It won't shave the hairs off you arm but for a quick, clean edge it it's spot on. Managed to tiddle up my old boning knife that that I'd abused for a few years prior with a few strokes as well... and that's saying something!

with a game pie of this variety it'd be hard to point the finger at what ingredient was letting the side down (although on balance it probably would be the rabbit). If the first bite is with the eye I'm there!

A little YouTube and somewhere where the wife isn't rushing you and in your face every five minutes about the mess and you'd be amazed what you can achieve mate. Scott Rea is the kiddy??

You did well with the shot mate - glad you're happy with him and the venison is still being enjoyed?
