  1. I was out the other day with Tim to go lamping on some farmland where foxes were still causing problems with some late lambs. Had an hour or so daylight available when he arrived so I dropped him off at a spot of mine he been to several times before and I went somewhere where sadly I can’t take guests. Unfortunately for Tim shortly after I left a walkers dog coursed a deer right out in front of him and then the only house in the area decide to hide a noisy bbq. He managed a fox and in the circumstances was lucky to get that!

I had a bit more luck and had only gone 100m up the estate drive when the button buck that gave me the slip last time decided to stand and watch me 25m off the track. The cover inside the vehicle allowed me to un-slip, load and aim the rifle off the wing mirror and when the put his head down to nibble something i shot him in the centre of it. He hopped and jumped around like a headshot rabbit (but 6ft in the air!) got so close to the truck I was worried it was going to jump through the windscreen!

I had a proper look at him at the gralloch sight and he looked healthy enough but it’s only when I came to take him out the chiller to skin him I noticed the less and ticks clustered and the hock ends. The hide and mead damage done by the ticks though!! Fortunately examples ive seen like this are few and far between!

    Watch yourself out there fellas!

  2. Cheers guys - it’s on a private estate and noise isn’t a massive issue so I might just start with the 3” supers and maybe get a couple box’s of 2.5” to try as a few dB could be useful in some other places.

Mostly I don’t want to push the deer about at this place while I’m doing it as the idea it to smash a few squirrels and then have a stalk after.

Will you not be able to shoot one good head for yourself ? as i thought you take some out of every age range

I’m more about making a good impression this season so will do exactly what I told the estate manager which is get the numbers down but leave the best to hold territory. As I’m sure you know age doesn’t always equate to a decent heads either.

  4. Apparently only two big bucks were taken last year and no does at all until I showed up so while I can understand if he’s pissed off it shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise.

All joking aside Tim your mentoring and guidance helped immeasurably, even when I had no ground of my own to return the favour with.

  5. There’s that many about it’s hard to say Rich. It’s been stalked in the past although they seem to have moved on or largely stopped visiting. I only found out after I took on the place that a fella I know has permission here as well but despite best efforts I’ve yet to catch up with him about it and it’s starting to get awkward!

  6. Made a start on the April bucks yesterday after work. The woods are looking great at the moment, leafless trees but lots of floor level greenery, electric green in places from the carpets of wild garlic and bluebells so the deer are far easier the spot than they were even a few weeks ago.

Im planning to leave the big bucks here but some of the ones I’ve seen are so big they make normal representative heads look pathetic, so much so the cull plan is has to include what might normally be left to try and get the numbers down.

The stalk started innocuously enough as I spent 1/2 hour trying to get a button buck in a safe place to shoot. He eventually moved beyond practicality so I wondered on. I caught sight of a bucks shitty ass wondering ahead of me further up so went for a closer look. The head wasn’t too bad, still in velvet, appeared to be going back a little bit the shitty ass was enough to make him a contender for the game larder. He made it easy for me by couching down a few yards further up and I neck shot him while he was still oblivious.

  7. Hi Phil - yes it does work at shorter ranges if you scale down the power output using the dial on the unit. If you had it full whack youd need to apply a bit of factor 50 on you face first of all as you get enough glare to blind you not to mention light you up!

  8. I’ve got a Nitesite Wolf and 300m is an huge overstatement bordering on a bare faced lie. How they are able to claim that I just don’t know. Clear as day out to 100 but I’d put 150 as its threshold. Ok you might be able to spot an eye further on than that but we all know better than to shoot first and identify later.

  9. I hope they do Rich. It turns out there’s another stalker with permission there but has only been a couple of times and only taken big bucks. They haven’t seen him at all over the doe season so got me in for some more active management to get the numbers down. I’m still trying to get in touch with him to work it all out.

Id like a dog redneck but have too much on my plate at the minute... maybe next year!

  10. Weather forecast is looking choppy again so gave my new place one more visit to show willing. I’ve got designated times when I can shoot but have a quick drive round the estate beforehand just to be on the safe side in case staff are still on site.

I saw a few cull bucks about on the place, some of which were clean, and also this fella who seemed happy to watch me as a drive past.

The wind was freshening so I used it to work towards a likely spot and suddenly noticed a doe was staring at me in a small clearing. She was only 50m away and as I was caught on the hop reckoned trying to get on the sticks would be a movement too far. Freedhand I carefully put the bead over her back and, as I released my breath, let the crosshairs drift behind her shoulder and fired. She registered the hit and hopped out of sight.

Good sign at the strike spot but none the less a dog wouldn’t go amiss. Fortunately there was plenty of light left and the follow up wasn’t too difficult and she collapsed behind a tree.

  11. Saturday dawn was Baltic cold but looked to be best of the weekend. Managed to tag a roe doe as she emerged from some nice thick rhododendrons. That’s four in four trips here but the woodland stalking takes some getting used to, it’s all pretty close stuff and I’m not getting many chances to get a second shot away before they disappear into cover.

Passing the owners chicken coup on the way to the gralloch site I disturbed a fox who ran up a the side of a steep quarry. The cover was really thick and I only just managed to track him in the bins. Lucky for me he stopped in a small opening against a some rocks.. unlucky for him he took the 6.5 in the chest. Absolute bugger of a job climbing up to find him and confirm things but you can’t just assume it’s dead.

I looked at a Blaser in 6.5 but wasn’t keen, I think I may have misjudged them, it’s handy to have things tidy,  and out the way,

This is a 6.5x55. I like the caliber but leave it made up on the safe. The take-down feature wasn’t the selling point as I was sceptical about it retaining zero but it does just that and sweet Jesus is it sweet to shoot.

  13. With a house extension that running out of control and more bloody filling, sanding and painting than I know where to start with the Mrs is a little unsympathetic about  me nipping out for a quick stalk!

Fortunately the secure parking under my office building let’s me make best use of a nifty little feature of my rifle.

    17:00 - leave the office.

17:20 - arrive at the ground and unpack the briefcase.

    17:30 - use it

18:00 - arrive home, a little later than usual, after another busy day?.

This doe was in prime condition and fat as butter. She was also carrying twins, yet another reminder of why, if circumstances were different, I’d prefer to more selective. Still, some damn good eating here.
