  1. Ive been to a couple of lurcher shows over the last 12 months and havent yet got my head round what the judges look for in the ring.. seems like comparing dogs is like comparing screws with nails...both are useful but do different jobs... with all the different mixes out there how can one be compaired with others on looks lone? i was wondering if anyone knew what the judging cirteria is? would be interested to see what the views are out there on HL alb Ol
  2. ive spoken to the police about it here in warwickshire and hes told me i can have an open FAC on .17hmr after 12 months.. 11 months down..... one month to go! ATB
  3. can any one tell me where to best place would be to post a found ferret? cheers atb
  4. interesting replies, cheers guys. - by the way the question was whether black ferrets were a different strain, not whether is was a good colour...
  5. can anyone tell me about black ferrets? there dont seem to be many about, are they not a commom colour or a specific strain?
  6. if you have lost a ferret in northampton please contact me.
  7. had a similer problem with my hw100, tried a few and settled on the bisley magnums - tight groups and pack a bit more of a wack, effective on all legal airgun game. They have done the trick on close range rats, pigions and rabbits at some decent ranges- but as above - all rifles seem to have tier querks.. worth trying a few on a still day
  8. cheers both - it wasnt vicious, just not seen it before. thanks for the piece of mind atb
  9. just been out to check my ferrets and noticed one jill dragging one other jill about by her neck? any ideas? 3 of them, all jills, have lived together for almost a year in a big cage with no problems. all been serviced by a vasectomised male though 2 might be pregant as he werent snipped to long before he went in and they are looking a bit fat? is it related? or any ideas? any tell tale signs of pregnancy before they pop or could it be a phantom pregancy? let me know what you think cheers
  10. just a quick question.. i had my hob vasectamised earlier this year and stuck him in with my jills about 2 weeks later as they came in season. they have all come out of season so im guessing its doing the trick, but the fist one that went in is looking a bit fat and maybe preganant??? i know if a bloke has a vasectomy he can still get a bird pregant for the first couple of times - same for ferrets??? oh and does anyone have an intact working silver or light coloured small hob in the mids to breed with a cracking working silver Jill? for couple of the litter or use of my vasectomised hob?
  11. no ideas? she did it again last night... caught one while we were out walking - was a good one.. then off she went.. i walked off and called her and she started to come back, got abouty half way and then sat down with it. called her and she came back leaving the rabbit behind - dead...... (!)if the rabbits stops moving she looses interest.
  12. ive got a 20 month old saluki whippet first cross who is coming on really well. have managed to crack the recall after a bit of work with the saluki obediance gene (!) shes just started jumping and has got much better with the rabbits. Shes still having a bit of trouble with the strike, she seems to be going in too quickly and missing them sometimes but i think thats going to come with experience. the biggest problem ive got, and the one im looking for a bit of advice on is her retrieve. Shes never been interested in retrieving since i got her at 6 months - toys or sticks - she loves the chace
  13. does anyone know where you can get a two stage trigger upgrade for a sako quad?
  14. cheers guys. some good advice - ill update on the progress, hopefully! Ol
  15. I posted something similar about 5 months ago - its just clicked with my dog - she believes the beam now! looks then runs straight down it - now shes just having a bit of a problem with the take, see my post this afternoon! persevere mate - you will get there, seems like it can be a slow road to a good dog - mines a Saluki X too! ALB Ol
  16. I was after some advice or thoughs on my young dog.. shes a whippet x saluki about 17 months now and is coming on in leaps and bounds. I started her off on a few ferreted rabbits when she was about 12 month and she took to catching them in open fields very quickly. since then she has got on well taking a couple of bolters that slipped nets, had a couple in the day and has begun to work on the lamp. It took her a while to grasp running down the beam but shes got it down the a tee now. the problem comes with her finnishing the course.. she runs them well, puts them under pressure
  17. vet nurses know shit all about nutrition....

  18. has anyone heard of a lesley hewett rifle scope? my old man got one from our local salerooms for about 5 quid, it says its made in japan but cant find anything about it through google?? cheers and happy xmas (!)
  19. cheers for the advice lads. will stick with it - as you say, its good that she has the gears! shes just got to learn how and when to use them and coordinate her mouth! i dont think it helps that at the moment im a bit short of rabbits so she might only get a couple of runs a night so she gets so excited and goes off at full pelt and 110% enthusiasm! will update how she gets on.
  20. cheers mate, just frustrating to watch when shes all over them!
  21. hi, ive moved on with my dog since the last post i put on here.. have 15 month old first cross saluki whippet... have been taking it slow with her, shes had a couple of bolter ferreting, had one or 2 on the lamp and is coming on.. but.. and this is where i need some advice - she overshoots and loses rabbits?! i havent got many on my permissions and when she gets a run she is on them so quickly, get a good chase on and is all over them.. then one overshoot and they are lost. she seems not to have learnt to slow down a little towards the end of the chase. has anyone had any experience of this or
  22. this is my whippet X saluki, first cross. about 23" bitch 15 months. coming on well, great speed, stacks of stamina - hard to ware her out walking her! can see the saluki in her though! not the best on the retrieve... though working on it still. very loyal as your all saying, sticks like glue and a great sence of prey drive. some great pics on here
  23. ive bought a second hand browning phoenix, cracking semi auto and not too much.
  24. i completely agree. have managed 226 yards with an hmr on a rabbit, but would much prefere to take them at 100-150... so it looks like 175 is not too much to ask for on a quiet night? 4" ish drop with a 100yard zero? with no wind.. shouldnt be too much of a problem.
