  1. I,m also chucking in with both Mole Catcher and Tomo. Same as you Tomo, started with the trad way of setting nets. First time out i ran 270 yards of net using the back pegging method (beginners and amateurs... night-time anyway), I,d been shown not to bother pegging the bottom line, the result was nine rabbits and the bottom line flipped over the top most way along, due to the howling gale i was working in. After that i pegged both top and bottom as i went, weren,t the quickest at but there it is. Started using the basket method probably some twelve years ago, tried Glen Waters method but i w
  2. Very articulate reply Hornhunter. It would have been very easy to have replied in the same vein as your condemers. The trouble is, it seems to me, is that everyone has an opinion about just about everything. Opinions are the worlds cheapest commodity, everyone gives them away, willingly, but the only opinion worth listening to, in my eyes anyway, is the CONSIDERED OPINION. I know absolute jack about these traps, therefore all i have is the bog standard reaction opinion....UNINFORMED. You have the experience to give the considered opinion.. the one worth listening to. No harm to those that don,
  3. Not usually into this well done sort of stuff, but couldn,t resist this one, so here goes. Well done HSF, well done first time ferret... but most of all that boys face says it all, his face is a picture no-one could paint. And i speak as a father of three boys myself so i know how you feel. Bloody brilliant.
  4. Well, and very accurately said TOMO. I too have seved my apprenticeship in the traditional method of longnetting... and let,s differentiate betwen daytime and nightime netting. Most anyone could set a longnet in daylight, but cometh the darkness cometh the genuine longnetter, whichever method is preferred. I personally now use what i would call the basket method using up to 500 yards of net all rigged with hazel in 100 yard sets Netrigger and i had a similar discussion in another thread , so i apologise for repeating myself again here, i often carry and run 300 of net single handed, it ain,t
  5. whats the point if they have flown off :11: only kidding Hi Trill, that,s my kinda comment... short, accurate... and very funny Seriously though, in many years of walking the woods night time the best we,ve ever done with pigeon is just over double figures in the one night, er, other birds are a lot easier to shoot .. from what i,m told of course! :11:
  6. Er, the point was that even on good winds those fibre-glass jobs have only got to move slightly in the basket to play a tune that will alert the close feeders, hazel is first choice for availability and it is also the quietest that i have found. I often work on my own and as hard as you try some sticks shift in the basket. get shot of the basket Good call Netrigger, but working on my own i will oft times carry and run three hundred yards at one go, using the old method of picking all the rubbish out with one hand whilst the other holds the net up in the air, not for me these days. If

  9. better setting the net on 6 uprights ! keeps the lines taut. call me old fashioned but i use hazel, nice and light and costs feck all. still use them in a basket no probs. (perhaps im just a tight a*!e huh) 100% in agreement there mole catcher hazel for me (ALWAYS). Hallelujah Hallelujah, Mapreader falls to knees and bows non stop for a full five minutes to both Molecatcher and Netrigger. I too use only hazel for my longnets (split ash for the old purse net pegs)apart for the first peg out of the basket, the fibre-glass pole goes in well to get the rest off to a good start. I find
  10. Hi REW, a few experiences that may benefit your night-time forays. Firstly, and most obviously, do not forget to push the field in on both sides of the hedge or all round the open buries, rabbits will oft times run to the nearest shelter, not necessarily where you plan to ferret them. As to how you will see your ferret, we use both whites and polecats, whites are easier to see, obviously, but we use the normal leather collars and attach starlight with clear tape. It takes a bit of bending but it does work. We are currently messing about with those boyracer flashy things that go on car wheels,

Hi to anyone interested, just to follow up on my previous post. Been to a different area tonight, I guess about 12 miles away from where i refered to previously, good sou-wester prevailed. My partner and i ran three hundred yards of net, took 58 rabbits off of two sets. This time last year, and beyond the xmas period mxyi was rife, tonight we had not a sign of it thank goodness. How the fff...k do you do paragraphs on this poxy machine. Still, moving on to other matters. How,s it hanging Chalks, just realised how you sussed.. it was the govt. dept thing wasn,t it?Tried to disguise it, guess

Hi Frank, just my twopenneth worth but down here, mid south coastish, we seem to have pockets of it all year round with, it would seem some more virulent outbreaks chucked in for good measure. What i have noticed is that when we get a bad dose that really shakes them up, i,ve notice that a crop of rabbits appear a short distance away that was not as heavily populated as prior to the outbreak, which leads me to believe that where so many die below ground the buries are essentially uninhabitable for quite some time, locally this can take a season or so before buries are getting back to normal nu
  13. Hi Anton, i also make all my own nets, from purse to stop nets and also long nets. My son has also just finished a 50 yard hemp long net which as previously advised should contain 100 yards of net to 50 yards of line.I f i may be so bold as to offer further advice concerning net making .Firstly on the actual making of nets, Anton you mention both cut hands and pinkies when using nylon...now i assume that you mean 4z which as rabbiters is pretty much the min we would use. The only way [other than having furnace hands] to avoid said problem is to realise this..and read this carefully.. all ..AL
  14. Hi ditch, you talking about those bolt traps that either push into the burrow or the run from cover? If not may i suggest for draw cord, a quarter inch steel cable and a horse plug for a peg!
  15. H :11: ow about very stiff purse nets
  16. his name isnt goofy is it? :11: it sure ain't any more!
  17. hi allrounder, personally i prefer to have my dogs inside initially, purely so they can be housetrained, handy if they need to come indoors through injury or recovery from the dreaded vet trips! Contrary to other advice given i would have introduced said pup in short visits to the kennel increasing in time length over a period of time. A second dog in the kennel would sure make it easier and less stressful for the both of you. Hope this helps.
