  1. In theory the idea is great, but then you wouldn't have a lurcher would you? because if they all did the same thing surely eventually it would get standardised and become a breed rather than a type, I think half the magic of lurcherwork is the sheer range of ability and general difference in all the dogs, everyone has their favourite cross, some people have amazing dogs and some people have shit ones, some people can bring a dog on perfectly, with timing and precision, and others will just lob the dog at stuff and hope it gets a kill. the best bred dog can turn out shite with terrible handling
  2. http://www.theboltonnews.co.uk/news/4628908.print/ always come across shit like this on the net, this is the sort of shit we have to contend with.
  3. so i finally got my lurcher pup, been wanting to get one for so long i'm really glad i finally have her. she is settled in nicely now as have had her for two and a half weeks. and amazingly enough the old springer x collie has really taken to her. she is 3 months old so got a bit of a wait til i can get out with her, but i can be patient. when she is house trained she will come to work with me on the shoot and with any luck will fit in to things nicely out there. plenty of game for her to start on when she is ready so hopefully she will turn out alright. anyone that knows me knows how much it
  4. this thread the only person running there mouth is you mate.
  5. sorry for late reply, been busy and tired, I spent a couple of hours testing my groupings the day before, (at various different distances, the gun was shooting pretty damn good) and that evening before i saw mr bunny, the in one eye out the other theory sounds crazy! but i accept that its probably what happened though i have never had it happen, but, well... maybe i have now, i generally aim for the topside of the eye closest to the ear...obviously i want to hit the brain, so i will follow the advice you guys have given and aim closer to the base of the ear in the future. thanks for the ad
  6. basically i was wondering if anyone else uses this gun, mines old but had a service recently, i am told its around 11 ft/lb more than enough to kill a rabbit close range, but last night i went out for a little wander around a neighbours fields, i spied a rabbit through the hedge, about 15 yards away, too good an opportunity to miss, it was sat stock still ears up, must have heard me coming, anyway i took the shot, aiming for the eye, and heard a hit and saw the bunny bounce up about a ft into the air, unfortunately he went out of my line of sight when he landed so i ran along the hedge to wher
  7. surely its about time for another march.... they didn't listen to us before, but if every single person affected (or sympathetic to those that are affected by this piece of fascist legislation) turned up, there would be a great many more people, I didn't make it to the last march because I was too young, but I would be there in a shot if there was another one....the turnout was good for the last march but it could have been better, wasnt it mostly fox hunters that went? but if every ferreter, pigeon shooter, general pest controller in the country went along.... also another idea, what abou
  8. alot of lurchers look like greyhounds mate, so just get a greyhound looking lurcher and tell your misses it's pure greyhound why not just get whatever you want, as a pup you can tell her its a greyhound, and when it grows into whatever it really is just say you made a mistake.... or were lied to by the breeder who's contact details you seem to have lost.... simples. hh
  9. just because its pe-ban dont mean we all want people to know what we are/were up to mate well said watchman as i said before ,those were the days lol that dog is the spit of my mates mongrel thing. its just funny for me becuase i cant ever see that thing taking on foxes after seeing it run up to and sniff a shot rabbit, before licking its arse and coming straight back to us without it...my mate asking me whether i thought he was going to make any sort of hunting dog was the funniest thing. in my mind - fat clumsy mongrel that has no interest whatsoever in rabbits live,
  10. is it the pic or does he have really short legs lol, if he does his job then fair play, hope he does you proud. hh
  11. dont pack it in cos of one c*nt and a major f*ck up. never go out with him again, and slander the sh*t out of his reputation, if he has one. get yourself a replacement, as hard as that might be, and keep your chin up. also, if you get the chance rip his head off publicly lol. hh
  12. i will be going for something with Bedlington in it, i like the character of the ones i have come across, and have been impressed with the speed and agility of the more sighthound bred crosses, no too mention the fact that they look great, will want a dog to be able to take anything if asked to, or simply if the opportunity arises. but mostly i will be after rabbits and these dogs do that well, the rough coat being an advantage when dealing with cover. as well as hiding scars from my vegetarian neighbours lol. atb hh
  13. correct, i tried, and i failed, you want to be ringing up estate keepers and try to get out beating somewhere. unfortunately its who, not just what you know that's important getting jobs in gamekeeping. try smaller shoots on farms as well, they are usually more likely to take someone on, estates are the popular option but because of that there simply aren't many jobs available. also, talk to the bloke that runs www.gamekeeping.com (James Grimston)ask him nicely if he will put a little ad on his site. he wants to help out people trying to get into the business. I got a couple of calls back than
  14. if crossed to a very biddable greyhound from biddable lines, i shouldnt think it would be a bad x, yeah i think it is frazer island, will have to wait for someone from oz to confirm that tho. i would have thought that any lurchermen in oz would have already seen the benefits and some would have done it by now. the physical traits of a dog that has been naturally selected like the dingo can only be beneficial, cant they? they hunt in packs and alone, and the strongest have survived, to me it would be worthwhile at least having a little bit of dingo blood in my working dogs, if it was availa
  15. i would be interested in it myself because the dingo is a wild dog but was domesticated once, and people domesticate them now, i would see it as a little experiment, a bit like selectively breeding wolves till they became our dogs of today. I don't know what the results would be. just wondering if any of you boys from aus could shed some light on it, has it been done? and was there any point? hh and a pre-emptive 'f**k you' to any messers that decide that this is stupid, it aint, its just observation and debate, its how your mind grows. allow it.
  16. how much of that is done from memory? excellent pics, i'm as always very impressed. hh
  17. fair play mate, knocked one out, if theres five of them i wouldnt expect to get the chance. thankfully i havent ever been ganged up on like that, my few fights have been one or two on one, and I usually do well enough, been a while now since my last one, but i'm a hell of alot fitter and stronger, and have been waiting for some chavvy wee gobshite to start something. surely i'm not that intimidating to look at, 5'9" aint much hieght, and 10 1/2 stone, hardly the scariest lookin fella. anyway, as said fair play to you, i wouldnt expect to even get to swing a decent punch if there were five
