  1. When you see a roe buck lower it’s head and point those spikes at your dog who is doing about 50mph towards it…..then your arse gets a bit windy ! Lol
  2. I have mate, of course, probably the first thing I did when I moved. Both on foot and in the jeep…… Its small fields, hill and rises, bog land, rushes, Forestry blocks, sheep on one, cattle on another, holes and drop offs and all sorts.
  3. Everything is good and everything is different mate, daytime is great but nighttime in the wilds of Scotland is also great….same as sitting in a ditch by the sea at 6am on a freezing Scottish morning while 50,000 pink foot fly over head is good. All these experiences are unique and special and I have been very lucky to experience them.
  4. Daytime fallow is a blast, daytime anything is a blast. Theres a chapter in Dogs & Deer about a great day a team of us had out with a little mongrel pack of yappers beating woods and setting ambushes…..genuinely one the great hunting experiences of my life that day. We had builders watching us from scaffolding and cheering the dogs on ! Lol
  5. You and I know a lad who’s name we ain’t mention who’s dog accounted for around 600 deer in its life time, and the dog he bred off that was better ! If you killed 600 deer in Ireland there would be none left ! Lol ?
  6. @TOMO You ever driven round Woburn Abbey at night ?……nights like that make your mouth water mate
  7. Most fallow I ever see mate was about 70 on one field in North Essex one night. Munty clean my father in laws allotment out about 3 times a week ! Lol Another place we used to visit, a mates permission and the the first time we went he said “Choose your Hares”…..I thought he was joking but sure enough when we got there, there’s 50 hares sitting on one field in amongst about 20 fallow !!……the dog didn’t have a clue what to do.
  8. Mate, I kid you not, I have seen 1 rabbit in 7 years ! And that was only because I spotted his tail flash from about 200 yds…..the place I was at, the bloke used to keep greyhound and I said to him “f**k me, I just see a rabbit down there” and he said “Yeah, I brought them with me from up north to help train the dogs” The most wild ground dwelling things I have seen is pine marten and mink…..but they are protected !
  9. Compared to the UK it’s a f***ing desert mate ! Also, and again this is my part of the world, the topography, forestry, and the nature of farm land make it useless for a decent dog as we know it. Your 28 inch machine ain’t much use here. Add to that no driven shoots or keeper estates, what is it ? 2 species of deer, it’s all little gun clubs who want to put down no birds, put f**k all back and spent the season wandering the hedge rows like Elmer Fudd for 1 skinny pheasant. They genuinely post pictures on WhatsApp groups if they even see a pheasant !! Fox shooters ba
  10. Well, it ain’t rabbits, Hares, pheasants or Deer that’s for sure ! Lol ? The most abundant thing here is Hooded Crows ! Oh sorry, and rooks. But that’s just my part of the country.
  11. In my humble opinion, it’s both. A good dog in the right hands is better than a good dog in the wrong hands and a mutt is a mutt no matter how much time and energy you put into it, believe me, I have the wasted years and the diesel bills to prove it.
  12. In my part of Ireland there’s no work for a proper lurcher or a gun dog for that matter and you can take that to the bank. If you think there is then I’m afraid you ain’t the authority you think you are.
  13. I have seen 2 what I would call (in my very humble opinion) great lurchers…..one was owned and bred by Mik and the other was owned by JRYipp off this forum. Absolutely outstanding in every way, lovely to have around, so lethal in the field they made it look easy, you could have hunted them dogs off of a boat !…….they just did everything without fuss and no messing and then they’d come home and lay down like the most laid back thing in the world. Absolutely no f***ing about ! You could have just watched them and never been concerned about slipping your own dog it was that good t
  14. I was lucky in that most of my dogs didn’t cost me a penny or very little, the lads that gave them away like that are the type you are speaking about I believe. The old lurcher in my picture was my pal, he could break a fox into 3 bits in about 30 seconds flat, the people I got him from wanted nothing but I gave them a £40 drink…..me and that dog got on, as they say, priceless. There’s is I believe 2 people on this forum know the person I got the dog from, nobody has ever heard of them.
  15. First of all mate, I don’t know the bloke and have nothing to inform about anyway so it’s no skin off to me. Secondly, if we can’t torment a septic now and again what’s the world come to ? Lol ?
  16. There’s nothing wrong with wanting the best of things imho mate, I like good kit for anything I do and that extended to not wanting an absolute article at the end of a slip (and believe me, I have had a few articles !) Now I didn’t give them nearly as much or the right type of work as my pals did but I still don’t want a mutt. I personally couldn’t give two fucks about the title “dog man” , I learned over the years it’s completely f***ing meaningless…..half these people ain’t practicing what they preach, no skin off my nose, but all the same it ain’t Shangri La. Theres lads thr
  17. Mate I know, but to imply that you need to have some type of mythical credentials to offer an opinion on a pretty simple question is total f***ing nonsense……who the f**k do these people think they are ? Lads have dogs, for some it’s their life and for some it’s their hobby and for others they just like to have a dog…..don’t mean they don’t know the answer to a question as simple as the one Wolfdog thought he asked ! Lol ?

    SPLATTTT ?

“Corrodes the soul”……an exceptional way of putting it mate, couldn’t agree more ?
  19. Now you have lit the blue touch paper ! Lol ?
  20. Oh give over, what “qualifies” someone to offer an answer to the blokes question ?…..do we have to show our credentials at the door or something ?, f**k off like. Most traveller boys will have forgot more about dogs than most of these snooty “kept a line for 50 years” types will ever know. The bloke got decent answers to his question which even my 9 year old could understand, he isn’t a victim !

    SPLATTTT ?

I agree with the how you are wired bit, but too much exposure to this stuff is bad for people no doubt about it. Im not saying it turns people into nutters, I’d say it’s just more f***ing depressing. Probably why a lot of city coppers used drink as a crutch, any I ever met are boozing most nights…..seeing the worst of humanity every day will do a person in eventually I believe

    SPLATTTT ?

Wasn’t suggesting it wasn’t mate, and me too but it ain’t pretty and it ain’t good.

    SPLATTTT ?

I won’t watch that stuff, it can’t be good for your head.
  24. Never had spaniels mate, me and a spaniel wouldn’t get on. f****d about with a few working types since I have been here but it was more out of habit than reality, I was just kidding myself on, there’s no proper work for them. I don’t have any proper dogs now, got a farm collie mongrel thing that someone dumped on the lane as a puppy 5 years ago and a mongrel whippet/lab cross that I bought for €30 for my little boy…..that’s it. Complete and utter waste of time having a proper dog here. Never had a deerhound off Mik, I had a saluki bull grey who I bought over with me b
  25. Decent ones are a machine when they get going.
