  1. 2024,I wonder what it has in store for each & everyone of us? Hopefully more good than bad although to be honest on a personal level I've had a horrendous start to the new year,on new year's day morning whilst out with the dog's my legs gave way & I ended up falling & a week & a half later I'm still black & blue, still the following day I was out with the terriers & put the first one in a place what has seen a 5ft shovel job & two which have been less than 2ft! Within 30 seconds of the dog going in the Bellman & Flint was showing 17ft 8! The dog held steady at that depth so the farmer came in his digger but was unable to get near so the gamekeeper left & went in search of a mini digger,by the time he returned we knew the dog was dead & this was now a retrieval job, under the sod it was like the bottom of a river bed,all sand & stone, every 4 buckets the digger took out 6 more collapsed in,still we persevered all morning, all afternoon until almost dark, when we eventually got to within 4ft of the dog my lad tunneled in with the shovel to try & prevent the bank from collapsing in,even just the vibration from the mini digger caused mini avalanche after mini avalanche. As we knew the danger of this continuously collapsing in the gamekeeper left the digger arm with bucket in the bottom of the hole for my lad to hang onto when tunneling in just in case it all came in again. My lad indicated he was now only 1ft away from our dog when instantly the bank came crashing in covering my lad to his waist in a split second but thankfully the digger pulled him clear, there must of been 10-12 tonne of earth that collapsed from high up the embankment into the hole. It was gut wrenching to of gotten so close to getting the dog out after all the hard work, yes it was only to bury him but no one ever wants to leave one of the team behind be that dead or alive. I guess I should be thankful that my lad never met the same fate as the dog. That day was tough to take, really tough,it's played on my mind ever since & I know my lad was even more depressed about thing's than I,the gamekeeper too. Since that day there's been more trouble & strife here,I'm really hoping that the early bad streak of luck this year jogs on & the remainder of the year is much better. One thing that may of changed thing's happened the past two days, many will know the issues I've faced with Boots & mating bitches,if you don't know well he's useless!! He must of had in the region of 100 bitches to him,the only ones he's mated are two of our own & a bitch of my friends, that's it! He stresses me out honestly but this week he's covered a bitch twice by AI,now some may think what's the big deal but he's been tried numerous times at that too & it has always ended with him getting all stressed & aggravated so this latest saga is a success story to say the least. I travelled to Scotland with him to have it done & the owner of the bitch done 8 hour's driving two consecutive days to get the bitch mated,I hope everything goes to plan for the fella as he's put some serious miles in to try and get a pup. I didn't even go in with Boots as I thought he would just stress me out as is the norm with him in these situations. The way my luck has been going I can't see thing's going to plan without some issue but here's hoping the bad streak has been & gone at least for a while!

  2. Early start for us today,we were out the door for 4am & done the drive & slog up the mountain for daybreak,it was a cold day on the high tops with a cold brisk wind with the mountain weather forecast stating that taking the wind chill into account temperatures were to be around -12C,we had light rain at times & at other times we had sleet. Unfortunately we didn't put anything to rest today, being honest we probably could have but I seen more than a handful of other's out enjoying the mountains today,I did see 3 big fine 🦌🦌🦌along with a handful of the opposite sex with them but they were no more than 400 yards from a group of 3 hiker's so common sense prevailed. We put some miles in still & old Boots who will be 12 this year really did put a shift in, ranging out & onto the many outcrops that frequent these high tops, his tracking collar information recorded that he done almost 13 miles. Boots is still as keen as ever even at the age of 11,he will always go the extra mile 'literally' to try & find/catch one. I don't think anyone could ever question his work ethic,he's been a fantastic & loyal servant to both I & my lads for over a decade now & I'm certain he's still far from finished yet. It's been a long & hard day,the dog's here in the house are now fast asleep here at my feet & the kennel dog's are jacketed up with the heating on keeping the chill of night off them. We go again in a couple of days time, refuelled & freshened up both the dog's & I and hopefully we will do what we were unable to today..

One thing rabbits just cannot handle, is the wet AND the cold,...combined......

They can take one or the other,...but continuous soaking, day in, day out,...never being able to get dry and warm,.. weakens them terribly....🙄

Living where I do where we get over 250 day's a year of rain I can well believe this, rabbits are & always have been thin on the ground in the area I live,if you don't or won't travel then you needn't have a running dog nor a ferret.

Good to see you back on here stranger! Good to see Boots still going strong and the kids grafting away. My two have had their best year since I recently moved south but by Christ Loki has put some bloody scares into me including a head wound that took 4 weeks of antibiotics to start to heal. One thing I will say mate is that you breed some dogs with drive and game as ! Like I said good to see you back and hope you are well

Hey up bud, nice to hear from you. Good to see you still have the son & daughter of old Boots living the best of lives as always 😁 Brilliant to see mate. Doesn't surprise me hearing about Loki to be honest, that whole litter have been suicide runner's from day one from what I've heard from the owners of other's, plus my own two idiot's & what they've put both themselves & me through G..they just don't see danger at all in anything they do,they are totally oblivious to it or they are just plain fooking stupid 😂 hope life is treating you well down there bud,I've said it from the day I first met you, your an absolute gentleman & one of the very best people in this game. I couldn't of hand picked anyone better to give dog's that I bred a better life,I know how much care & attention to detail you give them, they will never want for anything. Top man,now do the right thing & get them two mated together, you know it makes sense 😉

And you mate ....just got back from giving the two little sprinters a spin on one ...which they caught on the slop and retrieved....ferrets are tucking in to there early new years day dinner now.

Great stuff Tomo, nice end to 2023 that. I haven't been out since Xmas day or not grafting the dog's anyways,I usually always get myself out as of New Year's Day morning but I'm out with a few of the ankle biters tomorrow with the gamekeeper so the running dog's will have to wait until later in the week before they get a leg stretch. Hope 2024 is kind to you buddy, have a good un Tomo.

Sparky stayed at mine for a few days when I tried to line my late old bitch, absolutely pleasure he was sparky.

He was a brilliant dog mate, absolutely top class..I was privileged to see him running many times on a variety of quarry,he done everything in textbook fashion, one of the very best dogs I've ever seen at work,he had a temperament to die for Dodge 👍🏻

    Ash out of sparky

Yeah he's out of old Sparky bud,the dam to this pup is a fair animal too, very well tested so it's bred right enough..very intelligent little thing, doing everything as it should for it's age, been going in with livestock twice weekly since the day after it arrived & upto press doesn't give them a second glance, sits, lays down on command, she's already jumping small fences & she's been on scene when the old dog has knocked one over, every day is a school day when rearing a pup bud as you know.

  9. Merry Christmas everyone, hope you all have a good one & all the very best for 2024. Times have changed a lot in the past 20 year's at least in the UK regarding running dog's,do what you can, when you can, with the dog's you have. Enjoy your dog's,enjoy your day's & night's out with them, coming from me this is probably hard to grasp to many on here but regardless of the end result of your hunting just be thankful that your out there giving your dog's the opportunity, not everyone is able to do so for various reasons. There probably isn't anyone alive nor dead come to that who was more tunnel visioned into laying bodies to rest with the dogs than I for decade's but honestly these day's I care little what the outcome is,I just enjoy getting out there. I'll be out Christmas Day morning as always up on the mountains for what will likely be my final look out of 2023. Rest assured I'll be back out on New Year's Day to start another year off with the mongrels. 1976 when I first went lamping,so if I can make it until 2026 that'll be 50 year's of living the dream, have a fantastic, peaceful & stress free festive period folk's..take care for now.

Just to add I'll answer the questions prior to this post when I'm finished doing my dog's today, just heading out with them now,two hours late as I'm in friggin agony with my back, hips & knees, been awake all bloody night because of the pain again, getting old is fooking gold lol

Merry Christmas from the big fat man dressed in red

  11. This was Rose back in Feb 2022 the day she snapped two bones in her leg clean in half, she's a tough little thing not a murmur out of her & in fact continued jumping fences & gates on the way home even like that..second pic is her in August 2022 so 6 month's later. The vet who done her operation had never done one but forwarded the x-rays of her broken leg to bone specialists throughout the country for advice on how best to repair Rose's leg. She did tell me that there was no guarantee as the smaller bone that runs behind the big one was snapped about an inch from the end & was unsure if a screw through the plate & big bone would get a good enough hold in such a small piece of bone. Still, apart from having to get a screw removed things have been ok,she still weaps blood from the scar tissue on occasions especially after working but thankfully nothing too bad really. She returned from the operation in unbelievable form catching some great hauls on the lamp & she was electric in the daytime too. It wasn't cheap to 'patch' her up but I'm glad she's ok now. She has her flaws but don't they all. She's not a bad wee dog I don't think.
