Stormont Launch for Great Game Fairs of Ireland
AlbertJ replied to AlbertJ's topic in Gamefairs, Meet Up's and Events
L330, The Stormont launch was the all Ireland launch of both fairs - we follow this up with a Press breakfast at Shanes Castle on the Friday morning before the fair and a press launch on the evening of the 27th July at Birr Castle. We have launched before at the Michael Collins Barracks and other public venues in the south but have found that the format that are using this year works best for media coverage. Albert -

John, In spite of poor weather outside we managed to get all the right photos of hounds, terriers & lurchers, gundogs, hawks & falcons etc. And these have been wodely circulated to the papers. Also Malachy Cush from UTV's 7.30 show managed to get some footage which should be shown this Thursday night. Great guy and really interested in country sports and is coming to the fair. Great support from the politicians including Minster Arlene Foster and Minister designate Simon Hamilton and good letter of support from Tourism Minister Dr Leo Varadkar from the South. nice pic sammy the wee whippet looks in top conditon mate Thanks for that ant dog.It was a great day meeting some old and new friends Thanks to Albert hoppig that the weather is abit kinder to us at shanes but then again every cloud nas a silver lining in the fact a bit of rain is going to soften the ground for dogs competing in the racing . Great pictures Bluebell Great to see so many well turned out dogs of all breeds, including the hounds, at Stormont. Sorry I didn't get round to chat to everyone but it was difficult to co-ordinate everything with such awful conditions outside -

Has your dog got the REX factor? Fun competition in the Sunday Life newspaper today in association with the GREAT GAME FAIRS of Ireland BUT with some SERIOUS prizes. Des, This point has been made and taken before and is something we will be looking at for future shows. We have come a very long way in just two years in changing the format of our shows and in introducing new innovative competitions. All of these things and other useful suggestions will be looked at for next year. Albertj -
The All Ireland launch of the Great Game Fairs of Ireland took place at Stormont on Tuesday when 'Country really did come to Town' In 34 years I have never had as wet a press reception ever to launch the Great Game Fairs of Ireland and specifically the Fairs' International Year of the Dog which will see the largest and most varied cannine event ever mounted in Ireland and one with a REAL INTERNATIONAL FLAVOUR. But conversely we have rarely had a more successful one as everyone coped with the weather outside and mixed with a genuine warmth inside. Dog owners of all sorts were present t

24th ANNUAL ALL IRELAND CHAMPIONSHIPS

Another good idea which I will put to Matt. In the KC shows the Veteran is over 7 yearsof age but I have always thought this is an unfair age to older dogs. Over 8 would be a good compromise and might bring out some of the famous older dogs as well as some 'lasters'. Will confirm one way or another over the w/e. Albertj -

twiggy ------rebel is a litter brother to mine, ronnie, who is , whippet x grey--x greyx borzoi x irish terrier , Denned, Thanks for clearing up Rebel's breeding - I thought his unusual markings may have come from a Borzoi influence. Tommy 'Borzoi' Agnew a well known KC judge who judged all over the world and All Ireland Championship twice would have confirmed this probably at first sight. Tommy was a great judge of a dog and I remember him going over the lurchers at Shanes Castle in an excelent fashion. Do I here an apology coming coming? Albertj probably not albert---- -

a very good point, I can not see how any one would put terrier cross and collie cross in the one class there should be a bull cross class and there should be no further pandering too bsl it does not apply and never will, terrier cross class for wheaten, irish and bedlington cross terriers, the collie crosses should have their own class too, I have also for some time thought there should be a purpose bred racing class for the lurchers that are bred for sheer speed under racings condtions not being divisive or derogatory but many are now specialised for this task alone. I wonder will anyone eve -

Black Dog Enthusiast, I disagree - these things go in cycles. I judge at IKC Ch Shows and KC Open shows - primarily gundogs ( and mostly golden retrievers). Four years ago when I judged Goldens at a champ show - the dogs were markedly superior and my Best of Breed winner was a dog. Eighteen months ago at a champ show - the bitches were markedly superior and BOB was a bitch. She went on to be dogs of all sorts of breeds in the Group. Earlier in the year at a KC open show - the bitches were again better than the dogs and the bitch gpt the BOB. When I am judging 'the glamour factor' -

Can the winners of the family classes lady /gent go into BIS heat? NO - as far as I am concerned these classes are fun family classes. BIS - is drawn from Champion Terrier; Lurcher & Whippet Albertj -
Tango, As I see it apart from complaints about prizes most of the complaints appear to be about : 1. The Experience of the judges 2. The fact judges don't put working dogs up and 3. Bias in judging. 1. Experience in judging - how are judges to get experience if they don't get to judge. Long experience in a breed does not necessarily mean that a judge is competent but it is likely to help. 2. Shows are a beauty contest where conformation, condition, physical fit for purpose etc are all on which a judge can assess a dog in the show ring. They cannot assess a dog's working ability. A h

New Classifications at Irish Game Fair
AlbertJ replied to AlbertJ's topic in Gamefairs, Meet Up's and Events
WDS, I personally gave your suggestion full consideration but my wife who holds the 'purse strings' for the Northern Fair ruled it out as both too costly and a little too exciting for me at my advanced age! However my colleague ( Plus Twos) who has financial responsibility in the South and as you can see from his writing in Irish Countrysports and Country Life magazine, has a rather more liberal attitude, rather likes the idea and he says if you supply the girls he will supply the beer! Though it still would appear to be North/South politics to me! Albertj -
Well said Margaret. My wife had a rule in our house that my boys could not say anything about each other unless it was something nice. It has stood them in good stead. Unfortunately she found I was beyond redemption! Dog showing can bring out the worst in people with petty bickering. I stopped showing my golden retrievers after having a huge bit of success at the all Ireland Golden Retriever Club Championship Show when my puppy won three classes; my older dog two classes ( including the top one) and my bitch the Green Star Bitch and Best in Show. My wife who wasn't present said that I mus

Tully, Not really - my wife and colleagues say I get grumpier by the year! But I do like to try to get things right and I am always willing to listen to logical argument. I don't know why the show was classified as it was but your arguments for changing it were sound. I hope the entries justify the change. Albert -

Twiggy, The photograph is of two lurchers in fine condition. Only their owners know whether they work them or not and how. However the photo is intended to be illustrative of the type of lurcher that will be racing and showing at the fair. Both are winners. Only John Humphries and/or the breeders of his dogs can answer your charge that these dogs are full bred greyhounds. If I hear someone saying 'everyone knows' I would tend to disbelieve it as it tends to be something said to discredit someone - usually someone who has done well! Personally I think neither looks like a full bred -

Leanne, Yes there is a Puppy Championship. Albertj -
Just to show that positive suggestions work - Tullyeyed came up with a logical suggestion for different classifications for the 24th All Ireland Terrier, Whippet and Lurcher Championships at the Irish Game Fair at Shanes Castle on the 25th & 26th June. In consultation with Matt Lee we have decided there is real merit in his suggestions and the classes have been split accordingly. You will also see that Whippet Classes have also been split into Dog & Bitch The 24th ANNUAL ALL IRELAND TERRIER, LURCHER & WHIPPET CHAMPIONSHIPS At THE IRISH GAME FAIR www.irishgamefair.com SHOWI
