Speedy, Didn't see the racing as I was busy elsewhere and the decisions on what dog raced was down to the organising club. I think most people think they did a superb job overall. This classification of the whippets was a genuine attempt to address the concerns expressed on the various forums so as to be as inclusive as possible. It was not meant to disadvantage anyone. It was made clear it was an experiment to see how things went this year. Both the organising club and I are happy to hear positive suggestions on how the classifications of the whippets can be improved for 2012. Albert

Birr Castle Game Fair , Birr, Co Offaly
AlbertJ replied to appleblossom's topic in Gamefairs, Meet Up's and Events
Margaret, Just home from Birr after meeting with Lord & Lady Rosse who asked me to pass on their thanks to the the Rosscrea Club , Matt Lee and all the terrier, whippet and lurcher competitors for helping make the fair a huge success. To that I add my own thanks and the thanks of our team. Sorry I didn't get to see as much of the showing and racing as I would have liked but I sprained my ankle just a couple of days before we travelled to Birr and was rather buggy bound all weekend! My congratulations to all of the winners and especially the Le family from Rosscrea ( no relations of -

Yes all three WELSH judges are well known in their own breeds. I would ask all who enter under them to show how sporting we are in Ireland when it comes to accepting judges decisions. Albertj -
All dogs racing at Birr on Saturday 27th August ( 12.30 start) MUST BE MUZZLED. PLEASE BRING YOUR OWN MUZZLE.

Five Nations International Lurcher Championships Birr
AlbertJ replied to AlbertJ's topic in Gamefairs, Meet Up's and Events
Forgot to formally thank Redmills for their terrific sponsorship of the lead events. All FN qualifiers will receive a bag of their quality food ; as will all winners of the races; and the terrier, whippet, lurcher and puppy champion. Can all these winners report to me at HQ in order to collect their cheques and to have their photographs taken on the Redmills stand. I look forward to seeing you all at Birr for what should be one of the best ever Irish terrier, lurcher and whippet events ever. Our events will be stewarded by the Roscrea Club wearing Hi Vis vests. They will be in radio contact -
Five Nations International Lurcher Championships Birr
AlbertJ replied to AlbertJ's topic in Gamefairs, Meet Up's and Events
We have two Welsh, three English and two Scottish dogs qualified. Two of these have definitely indicated they are coming and others have indicated they are considering coming. Strong field of dogs from all over Ireland also confirmed so should be around at least a dozen for the three Irish judges to go over. A good start for this year with many other shows already applying for qualifiers for this Championship and the Master Mc Grath for next year. -
The Redmills Five Nations International Lurcher Championships will take place in the main arena at 5.10 on Sunday 28th August. All qualifiers must report to Game Fair HQ before 12.00 noon to complete their registration, pick up their ring numbers etc. The Final qualifier will be selected as the ROI Champion in the show at Birr. Judges for the ROI Championships in Whippets, Terriers and Lurchers are well known and regarded Welsh judges. I would ask all competitors, win or lose, to accept the results of the judges in a sporting fashion. The Five Nations Championships will be judge

Tango, No camping inside the fair but Streamstown at Roscrea is a good site with good facilities. I have pm you with other suggestion.

We did get reports of some people having a bit of hassle from people who were alleged to be travellers near the terrier and lurcher rings. But unfortunately it was not reported to us until AFTER the show. We had good security at each of the gates and circulating both on foot and by buggy , plus Garda on mountain bikes and our car parking team are all in radio contact ( so that they can be part of the response to problems). Had this been reported it would have been dealt with immediately. We create a happy hassle free atmosphere at our events and certainly this problem appears to have been la

LesleyD, See the contacts page on our web site www.irishgameandcountryfair.com for some accommodation contacts.Mid Ireland tourism are operating a booking service for us. Streamstown camping /caravan park is very good. If you are stuck we might be able to arrange some 'rough camping' for you with local farmer. The Whippet racing classification is likely to change to weight/height after this show but hopefully the split is at least a step in the right direction towards running like with like. Albertj

Thanks - I hope you will enjoy it even more this year. We have more stands than ever especially those of a country sports and living nature including the largest display of guns we have ever had. We have superb prizes throughout and many more new attractions.Just keeping our fngers crossed for good weather!Albertj

The Great Game Fairs of Ireland lead the way for innovation in terms of new competitions, new events and new attractions. Overall we try to develop attractions with a traditional ethos that will both entertain and educate - we think that the 'Victorian Poacher' is such an attraction. Debuting at the Ballywalter Fair and developing at Shanes Castle - he is bringing 'the complete package' to Birr - a good arena act demonstrating a traditional craft but with an amusing twist for the public and for the first time in Ireland mounting a 'Pugs and Drummers' stand demonstrating the various ways of

LV, If you also look at the thread 'What is a Whippet' and some of the other whipet related threads on the K9 forum you will see that opinion is also fairly well split there. We probably went for the easiest option for the first time we have split the whippets into two classes for racing but I am surprised that people haven't welcomed an honest attempt by the club and ourselves to offer more races, more prizes and the opportunity to move closer to racing 'like with like'. I have received some very positive calls and emails suggesting that the fairest way to split the whippets is by w

UTB, Thanks for your post. You obviously feel strongly about this and I respect that. I think it was you who made the suggestion to me about an 'elite class ' for lurcher racing and as you can see we have started to take this on board albeit again in an interim fashion. As you have guessed I put my own viewes in a forthright fashion and I don't mind others putting theirs in a similar manner. BUt I think it is better all round if you decide to criticise something you make a suggestion how to improve it. As I said to Speedy above this is an interim measure for Birr only to see how it goes.

Hogie, Come forward with ideas and we will look at them. Albertj i gave you ideas on another site and all you say is you'll look into them.... your more interested in what makes you the money .... and thats the racing if you was that interested in the working lurcher you would have had events to show what a working lurcher can do and thats not just chase a plastic bag up a field can i also ask why the feck would any working lurcher man want to race there dog out of a trap??? Thanks for your suggestions and we have looked at a lot of ideas and discussed them. If you

Kegs, Thanks for your input. This is an evolving situation. I think we have made great strides over the last few years in introducing new competitions and improving prize structures and positive publicity for terrier, lurchers and whippets. Within our shows the terrier, lurcher and whippet competitions are now comparable with our gundogs and clay shooting in times of our focus and prize structure. A lot of this is down to constructive criticism and advice from very many people too numerous to mention. As I have said we still have away to go and we are receiving lots of very good sugge

Leeview, Thanks for your input. I think the whippet owners might have some opposing views! As you know we have upped the prize fund for terriers and lurchers - for the show and the racing and so long as the support , such as we had at Ballywalter & Shanes, continues to justify it so we will continue to look at new prize funds. As I said earlier the KC registration classification was simply a way of splitting the whippet racing classes for THIS show. It would appear that this is likely to change to probably height classification in future. Racing KC whippets is not against

Poppy, As I have explained this was one way suggested to resolve the 'what is a whippet' controversy and to try to ensure like was competing against like. as such it is not a 'KC class' as the KC have no involvement in this show. There are ways of dealing with this such as height and weight and we are happy to discuss this with whippet owners at Birr and afterwards. Albert

Lurcher 330 The two classes are as advertised KC registered and Unregistered Whippets. I think this is an advance on having just one class for 'Whippets'. It is up to the club to decided what is a whippet on the day. This is the way it will be run this year but we have discussed classifying them by weight/height for future events. Your suggestions are welcome. AlbertJ will the showing be the same because if so there is no reason why the terriers should not be the same so that say the border terriers and Lakelands should have to show their papers on the day to enter their class and if
