  1. well , leaving "honest jack" and mrs t to one side for the minute . .i am still interested to hear from the people who claim we do not live ind a democracy . .in your view, what is a democracy? What makes a genuine democratic system of government , not some howl at the moon idealistic utopian dream . Do you actually think that we can run a country by having successive votes on every single act of parliament , every piece of legislation should be set before the country for their yea or nay? Apart from the fact that this would be extremely impractical and hugely expensive , take a look around yo
  2. dosser , i cant stream video to my phone so youtube link no good to me , but would be interested to know who the "last good man in power" was , my knowledge of world leaders is not enough that i could make such a statement. Also , where are the less biased news reports that can fill me in on the real situations in zimbabwe , burma , north korea , china et al . . .as i have clearly been duped by the conspiracy of mainstream media , possibly part of wolfie smiths worldwide conspiracy (see above!)
  3. At last a voice of reason , a march would achieve little , and a badly organised march with no police liaison and poor turn out will hinder rather than help the cause. A march would help us vent our frustration , make us feel better maybe , make us feel like we had done something. . .but as regards changing legislation ,it would be like trying to smash a brick with a feather. IF YOU WANT TO DO SOMETHING VOTE , GET REGISTERED ,GET MATES REGISTERED , CAMPAIGN ,LOBBY , GET INVOLVED IN THE PROCESS INSTEAD OF JUST CRITICISING IT. . Its the only thing that can help ,and its up to us
  4. well lads , howes resignation speech was about europe , not the poll tax. . . "Surrendered sovereignty , she says we have already surrendered enough , churchill was right ,it is pooled sovereignty" not the poll tax or the riot. those who have posted we dont live in a democracy, i would like to know what it is you think a democracy is ? They didnt take our freedom , just our freedom to hunt , big big difference. There are many countries in the world where there is no democracy, where if you publicly speak out against the government you will lose your freedom or even your life.so maybe we could
  5. I'm coming on to this one a bit late cos I've been away for a few days. Swampy, you seem to be claiming that civil disobedience never changed anything. Sorry if I have misinterpreted you . . . but. When the anti poll tax march kicked off in Trafalgar Square in 1990 and we went down and dirty with the Met we got rid of Mad Maggy The Handbag. Even her private advisers have admitted that the weight of public opposition meant that she had to go. If we make our position clear the politicos have to listen cos if they don't they lose votes. I don't advocate violence but if it works . . . Ric
  6. we can continue here , rather than hijack the marchers thread. I was mistaken in my interpretation of civil disobedience , the dictionary says "the refusal to comply with certain laws as a peaceful form of political protest" with the emphasis on peaceful my reference to terrorism was way off mark , however i still disagree with your suggestion that its the only way to change something. . With regard to the law the only way to change it is through political process ,and civil disobedience wont change anything. Like you , i choose to ignore a certain law but i dont class it as civil disobedienc
  7. swampy ,"civil disobedience is the only way to change anything" ? ? ? The hunting act is the topic of conversation and it was a change brought about by an act of parliament introduced by a DEMOCRATICLY ELECTED government. You can be certain that the only thing that will reverse that change will be an act of parliament. Civil disobedience will achieve nothing whether you are talking about protest marches ,car bombs or any other kind of civil disobedience it will most certainly achieve nothing. The thing is , we hear a lot about the hunting act taking away our freedom , but that very freedom is
  8. There was a post in the terrier section this week criticising a shooter who claimed to have shot 400 foxes this year. A couple of people said it was excessive , a couple said it sounded like bull , and a couple said that criticism was uncalled for and simply divisive. The topic did not break down into a slanging match but was locked because "we should all stand together." i know that some sort of censorship is necessary on these forums , the mods cant allow abusive posts for instance, but is it really necessary to lock hot issue topics? The hunting act infringed on our freedom , but are we to
  9. do not try on the le chameaus , they are sooo comfy . .but they will split ,no doubt about it
  10. my le chameaus were by far the most comfortable pair of boots ive ever worn BUT . . . .they split in 6months ,on the instep where the boot creases across the toe ,got them replaced and GUESS WHAT. . .they split again. At £180 a throw thats 360 a year on boots , total crap. . .and i dont even dig that much , but i do a lot of miles with the dogs. Anyone who owns a dog , these are not the boots for you, you can not possibly keep a dog fit in winter weather without trashing these boots. I now buy boots in hiking shops ,anything about £60 to , and if they last a year , so much the better. Le ch
  11. yes , good to see coverage that wasnt squeamish . .but i think that hugh has totally misrepresented the number of deer in this neck of the woods , as i would say there are only one or two lads . .in fact there arent any at all , and i for one have never seen any . . . Er , i think that hugh shot that sika in scotland or possibly japan , so if you could all just move along please . .theres nothing to see here ,nothing at all and i can hardly hear myself think for all these damned police helicopters everywhere . . . .
  12. when muslims march they always have less than 5 thousand and they always get what they want Really? What acts of parliament have been passed based on protest marches?? I could be wrong but i thought protest marches had a 100% failure rate as regards affecting legislation . . .the nf and anl , cnd , the miners , stop the war , countryside alliance . . I suppose the poll tax was eventually overturn , but was that the result of the march / riot . .
  13. i wish you all the best lads , it will take a massive effort of coordination to organise something like this. Problem is ,anything less than hundreds of thousands of people just wont do. If you march in support of fieldsports and only get 5or 6 thousand it will just underline what a minority we are. I think the countryside alliance are the only organisation who can pull this off on the scale that it needs to be to get the correct media coverage. Im not sure now is the time . .when we marched before , we hoped to influence parliament in order to prevent the act being passed into law. The polit
  14. i think the tories should repeal . . .and i think the tories will repeal , mainly to spite the party that brought about the ban . .such is politics. I do not however think they should put hunting front and centre during the campaign. .for one thing its not a big vote winner , (75% of people apparantly support the ban !) but mainly ,even though hunting is a very big part of my life i just dont think the subject is important enough on the scale of problems facing the next government of this country to be a major part of an election campaign . . .when i hear that the league are mobilising to make
  15. its just bluff and bluster from brown , loaded question from a backbencher so he can make a point. I dont think it matters if 75% of people in a poll support the ban . .for a start its only a few hundred people , couple of thousand tops . And even if it was 75% of the country , they mostly have no strong opinion but will answer when asked . . If you asked me if i like modern art , i will say no , but i couldnt care less about it ,would never come up in conversation. i think there are a couple of million pro hunt a couple of million anti hunt and 50+ million who couldnt care less ,but 75% would
  16. ive been reading treat them like heroes ,and thinking about this lad a lot . . .not that he could live up to the high standards of the dogs in the book ,but in some ways yes , he finds he stays he gets stuck in and he does give it his all , but oh how he drove me crazy that first year. He had to be either in the dog run or on the couple . .or he was below ground , simple as that. If i didnt get the gate shut quick enough he d be out and gone ,the only chance of catching him was if he stopped to get at the birds.. I used to run him in the middle of a huge field with the lurchers for 5or 10mins
  17. parts of this book have choked me up , reading about his old dead dogs has brought the memories of my own flooding back. Hes a proper dogman is mr harcombe , but the bit where the dog turns round to look at him . . .if i had my life again , i wouldnt read that page
  18. I always have thoroughly enjoyed intellectual debate with people who disagree with me, and i always will. What i cant stand is weak argumentative crap. . .i cant stand it ,and the anti sites are full of it . . .AND SO IS THIS ONE !! . .if you are debating a topic and you resort to calling those who disagree with you names ,as has happened on virtually every hot topic on here , then you completely weaken your position. It indicates that you either have no genuine argument to make or that you are unable to string a sentance together. If an anti calls me a moron , i know there is no reasoned deba
  19. i think shooter2000 has made a valid point , i dont think he is saying all lurchermen are the same, nor is he saying all travellers are the same. It is a point that comes up time and time again on this site , there are cowboys out there with no respect for the land ,who destroy property and couldnt care less. Many are on here , regularly defending their behaviour , . . . .my hunting life , i have never in 27years met a farmer who was a lover of hares deer foxes or badgers . . .i have never ever been approached by a farmer landowner keeper or copper when ive been hunting . . .the hunting act ha
  20. ha ha , nice one !! I used to do that years ago with a frozen fox ,when i was deering on a bit of keepered ground that was sposed to be red hot . . .what the hell i was thinking i ll never know !! . . Got fed up with it in the end , never saw anyone any way. Rabbits is a good idea though , problem is i cant bring myself to slip em on rabbits . .never have really , gauranteed way to knock up their toes for nothing
  21. i just take lamp, dog , quick release collar and knife . .in the motor i have first aid kit , water and towel. In my pocket i carry a can of purple spray ,a roll of tape bandage and 1 dressing . . Thats it , travel light , free bird
  22. ive got a field i run which is 2furlongs downhill ,440 yards. Id just got my bitch back from kennels and she was thin , id fed her and walked her up to doing 4miles a day by the end of the week. So it was dusk and there was 1roe not far down, about 70 or yards ,but only 30 yards out from the hedge that runs the full length of the field, i let her under the fence and slipped her , didnt think she was fit enough but first run ,a bit of a pipe opener , thought she d be 50 / 50 to keep it from jumping the hedge . . . .she never put a turn on it !! 440yards in a straight line . . . .i was not too
  23. really does depend what kind of work you do . . .or did , weve all seen dogs back in the day that have took a hiding off a fox or been booted up in the air by a stag , and then they nearly catch the next one , then nearly catch the one after that. . Too much brains or not enough guts ? Im not sure. .but me personally i cant stand mooching dogs , hunting up and thinking for themselves , if it suits you fine ,but it dont suit me , i hate seeing running dogs with their heads down like a foxhound , i want sight hounds , looking ahead not rooting about in hedges , its why i run longdogs not lurcher
  24. if this has been discussed before please post a link. Back in march simon hart announced that the former director of the league against cruel sports had joined the countryside alliance , as he felt that "the hunting act was not improving the welfare of animals" and he wanted the act repealled. Although mr hart et al at the c a welcomed barrington with open arms , i myself was less than impressed with this "road to damascus" experience . . Surely its clear that someone who has been so opposed to hunting that they worked their way up to be the DIRECTOR of the lacs , is extremely unlikely to ever
  25. the law prevents the hunting of mammals with dogs , with exceptions for rabbits and rats ,flushing with one or two dogs , and bolting with a terrier to protect gamebirds. Its nothing to do with vermin or game mate . . Its also nothing to do with protecting animals , but thats another story.
