  1. Cheers mate, Ase Utra Jet-z CQB, blinding mod :thumbs-up:
  2. But an un-calibrated Mk1 lug 'ole won't tell the difference. i would think that lack of calibration(mk1 lug) would not stop you from thinking that a 30.06 may be a little louder than .177 hmr whether moderated or not bud waidmann Can't comment on HMR v's 30-06 but .223 v .50 has very little discernable difference. I am talking sonic crack here, nothing to do with moderated/unmoderated muzzle blast.
  3. Agreed, the exit pupil is 7mm for both but from experience, having used both in the dark, I have to say the 8x56 edges it. Whether that be all in the mind who knows?
  4. To answer your original question then, I have had 5.56, 7.62, .50 BMG and shotgun all fired over my head, apart from the shotgun the only discernable difference was in the 'thump' from the muzzle blast. The sonic cracks all sounded similar and the .50 cal muzzle blast sounded like a bomb going off .
  5. My .222 with CQB mod isn't a million miles from the HMR I used to have.
  6. Obviously the 8x56 will have better light gathering purely due to the larger objective lens but the 6x42 can hold its own under the lamp. I had a 6x42 on my Triple and easily lamped bunnies out to 100yds so there should be no probs at airgun ranges. The 8x56 is a big scope, I have one on my stalker, so you might want to think about whether this will be a concern. I wouldn't think twice about putting a 6x42 on my .22lr. HTH
  7. Exactly. I don't class shooting foxes as sport because I only shoot them on the farms that specifically ask for them to be erradicated. In this case a dead fox is a good fox,on one of my other permissions , who doesn't have lambs, this would not be the case. As far as rifles not being sporting JDP, it's a lot more humane, and less stressful for the animal than terriers and a spade :nea:
  8. I seem to remember not giving any reasons for mods. I just put Rifle + Moderator in the box rather than two seperate entries, and then reasons for rifle. I wouldn't worry, these thing take a bit of time don't they.
  9. So rather than go to Asda with Mrs Trackpad I convinced her it was a good idea that I went out for an hour to see if I could pick up a fox with the new call. I grabbed my kit and we drove off in our seperate directions. Anyway, after parking up and wandering over to where I got my admin sorted, lamp fitted, loaded up and call to hand, I flicked on the lamp and feck me, two little headlamps staring back at me. In the gob with the foxcalluk and a few squeeks later charlie comes trotting in to yards. By this point I was steady on a wire fence, safety off and ready to give the good news. Ban
  10. Eeeuw  Good luck with it, I hope it works out for you. 6.5x55 is a cracking cal.
  11. True, I have shot rabbits < yds and removed the head complete, >100yds and the rabbits can look like they just fell over with no visible entry or exit. Still wouldn't use it on fox though, there are better cals
  12. you found two wounded deer this week??? if you shoot at it you should follow it up. i hope you gralloched them and went back when it was dark clint? waidmann I think Clint was infering that someone else had shot them (poacher?) and he had found them. Someone shooting at deer with small cal rifles is hardly likely to follow up.
  13. Really? I didn't find this to be the case at all, it is very agricultural when not 'set'.
  14. Could be Lapwings, but could also be Oyster Catchers. There's loads of them by me and they make a right old racket. Did you see a bright orange beak?
  15. Went out last night for an impromptu look for Charlie on one of my permissions. After a lot of calling there was no joy but I did come across 5 Roe that were skulking around on of the hedge lines. I was surprised at how un-spooked they were by the lamp and they just kept looking at it wondering what was going on. I managed to stalk to within 70-100yds across open field but identification under the lamp at that distance was limited. I estimate 1 buck 2 does and 2 followers, so hopefully a few kids to come in the next few months Just need to convince the farmer he likes venison now
  16. 1. Get Hornet for nowt. 2. Sell Hornet. 3. Variation. 4. Buy .222 Job Jobbed
  17. I agree with Dan. Although people do use it, .17HMR is not a fox round. If the farmer is seeing more foxes and asking you to sort them out it is not opportunistic is it
  18. Some like them some don't so I expect your replies will reflect this. I had one in 6.5x55 and hated it. The stock was awful and I coudn't get within 4 MOA when using a bipod (yes it was a mk2). The super safe bolt needed the strength of a bear to crank it and it was a bit unwieldy with a T8 stuck on the end. Although the safety is lauded for its three positions, I found it cheap and plasticy. I'd go for the Tikka.
