    new jill

Was hoping it would be something she would grow out of shes only been out twice, went down the holes straight away. this has been her only fault so far just a pain when out.
  4. Just started working a new jill i bred this year, shes doing ok, bolted a few and stops under when put down a hole. but when it comes to taking her out she doesnt want to leave. shes the same at home when playing as soon as you get near she starts running backwards and bouncing about. but when out working its becoming a problem as she comes to the hole but as soon as you walk towards her she runs back down. takes ages to get her out again. she looks as if shes just playing but it takes ages to get her out. just got to hope she pushes through the net and into open space so u can pick her up but
  5. Got a new mk3m colllar for xmas, used it once and think i prefer the original mk3 collar. Apart from nearly forgetting to switch it on, it went off while working once, took batteries out and put them back in and it was fine. dont no what caused it and it hadnt just switched off as it wouldnt switch back on. And aswell as that the old MK3 worked with hearing aid batteries (which i got for free). This one needs the propper 394 batteries. Only had the one outing with it so far and may come to prefer it with more use but first impressions make me prefer the original mk3 collar.
  6. i think both have their advantages and disadvantages. On a day when rabbits arent bolting i prefer a bog hob, keeps the rabbit in the same place to be dug out. i find with smaller gills the rabbit pulls them about a bit and can have moved by the time you've dug to them. But on other days the big hob gets a hold too quick and you need to dig when a smaller gill would have got them to bolt...
  7. I have dug my ferret out of a set which had bolted a few rabbits to find the ferret eating a rabbit which had obviously been dead a while. Musnt bother the rabbit or at least the odd one doesnt. Dunno whether a few would put them off.
  8. If i wait long enough my ferrets do come out but i start the digging within about 5 mins of them not showing. My bags would be half the size if i didnt. Usually no more than 4ft but can be hard at times with big rocks and roots etc. Also i dont like the idea of leaving a kill, for the sake of a few minutes digging i would say you get bigger bags, more sets done and you arent leaving any underground. Definately worth the dig IMO
  9. My 2 best workers at the moment came from 'pets' that hadnt been worked at all. I also have another two which have come from good working lines, one is this years kit so hasnt realy been tried but the other just doesnt seem to want to no yet, down a hole and straight back out the same one. im sure it will get the hang of it eventually but seems to be taking longer than the ones which came from 'pets'. And as for feeding i always feed mine the night before, seem to have to dig them out less.
  10. lol, should have left your number... dont think it will be long before people stop going there, she'll soon change her mind then
  11. took this off the illments page Q- My ferret is moulting A- the best thing you can do here is monitor the fur loss, take photos to put on the forum and let everyone have a look, if the hair loss is bileteral (its in the same places on both sides of the ferrets body) then it is a symptom of adrenal disease, and the best person to discuss the options for adrenal with is a good vet. if its just abald tail its simply called rats tail and can happen to any ferret and is nothing to worry about. dont no whether it helps just when it said about it being in the same places both sides of the fe
  12. bet the golfers dont see them as pets, especially not when theres holes all over the place, surprised anyone golfs there, must make a right mess of the course.
  13. Had a good day last week. ended up with 29 which is nearly double my previous best. fields were still covered in snow, think this was the reason there was more at home. Seemed to have to dig alot out tho. Also had three in a stop end, first time for me, never seen more than one before that.
  14. i no this isnt the ferreting section but what is the nose like on a whippet? would it mark as well as a lurcher?
  15. Thought this might be the case. Just thought id check incase it was worth asking. air rifle is out of the question, already been told i cant have one, cheers anyway.
  16. Passed a local golf course today and noticed quite a few rabbit holes. Was thinking about emailing them to try and get permission to ferret there but didnt think they would be happy with you digging your ferret out, especially near the putting greens which is where i could see the holes. Was wondering if anyone on here ferrets any or whether ferreting is out the picture in such an area. Also how does it work for times to go as i wouldnt imagine them closing parts of the course while you work.
  17. I use shredded paper for mine all year round and had no problems. at first i was told that with hay there was more chance of them getting fleas, especially in the summer. dont no how far true this is tho. But on the whole shredded paper seems fine and cheaper

    Terrier

Do like the look of that dog and does pretty much what im looking for. its mainly marking and bushing im after in the rabbiting side of things but a dog that could catch bolters would be a bonus (been told im not aloud a lurcher, still live with parents). didnt think bedlington terriers were fast enough to catch bolting rabbits... learn something new every day. Cheers for the replies lads
  19. Was hoping to get a terrier pup in the near future. Mainly for rabbits but hopefully some rats aswell. It will be kept in the house as a family pet also. I liked the look of patterdale terriers and no someone who is breeding his soon... good worker etc. I spoke to him lately showing interest but he thinks it would not be the dog for me. He said they are hard work to train and more of a fox dog (pre ban of course). His suggestion was a border terrier. Just wondered what your thoughts are? Any replies would be appreciated.
