  1. Im doing the same course at Newton Rigg, I have to do a minimum of 10 weeks work experience, I just sent loads of polite letters to local estates, the FC and shoots, I've been really lucky, only sent them out 2 week ago and I've had to confirmed offers already. One is working on a large estate with duck ponds, a pheasant shoot and stalking, the other is a job with a professional stalker. Just send some professional letter out, tell them about yourself first, then what experience you've got in that field, and then go onto say how their offer would help your future asperations and dreams. Hope t
  2. Any of the big ones, BASC, Countryside Alliance or NGO will do fine. I'm with BASC and CA, never had any problems
  3. Yeah Duddon Estuary to be precise. Its literally only 5 mins from my house, absolutely brilliant being so close!
  4. A neoprene dog vest mate take a look at my other post - http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/index...howtopic=117859
  5. Out on the marsh again, moved to a different part of the marsh to what I was on earlier this week. After duck today, saw a few knocking about with the binos yesterday but as you know with wildfowling seeing duck one day means bugger all the next. Set off half 10 this morning as the tide was full in at 12.47 and was a 8.7metre; quite a good height for the spot I was going. Got all the decoys chucked out on my motherline in a small channel which I know overflows with anything over an 8m tide and got into my chosen dugout and made myself as comfortable as possible. It was now just a waiting game,
  6. Got it from here, only got large left though - http://www.whistlingwings.co.uk/acatalog/L...t_Aid_Kits.html
  7. Nice well done the pooch looks an old pooch what you think of those dog vests would you recomend for dogs out on the massh/rocks of our coast??. No she's only 6, haha, she's always got that soppy looking face, its a real softy - good company though. Yeah I'd recommend my particular vest to anyone, its made by Avery, 5mm neoprene throughout so keeps her warm even in near freezing temperatures. The vest has a good overall fit which doesnt restrict her movement at all. It fastens with a large robust zip which is still easy to zip up with cold numb hands. Its also got a couple of neat larl
  8. Went out on the 1st for duck, plenty of pintail and mallard about but the tide wasnt quite high enought so they all just sat out on a sand bar for the duration of the tide so never got a chance of a shot. Theres a few greylag about, they're mainly resident geese that we have all year round, we dont usually get the pinks on our marsh till 2nd week in November onwards. woollyback
  9. I've got this one, cant fault it for under a tenner! http://www.bushwear.co.uk/nostyles.php?Pro...&ClassID=46
  10. Well done that man! never seen a fow with that spotty colouration to it.
  11. I live in south Cumbria and agree with you; always had praise for them, very quick and easy to deal with. My local FAO Mick is a real sound bloke.
  12. Never got satisfactory groupings with my CZ, only bought them because my gun shop didnt have any eley subs. Wont be buying the CCI's again
  13. Short and sweet; Didnt manage to get any duck yesterday so went after the geese early this morning out on the marsh. A very good bag from my patch. Three greylag with my pooch.
  14. CZ in .22, Howa in 223 and Tikka in .243, thats what I'd have personally, but everyones tastes and requirements are different. Assuming your local FD has a good selection have a look at all the makes and see what suits you best. The Remmys are also a good rifle worth a look. But remember, always buy the best you can afford. 15. I'm in South Cumbria, been out with the binos this week seem to be quite a few duck about, mainly mallard. Also a few of the resident greylag,
  16. Steel will kill very well at sensible ranges, I shot 3 geese at reasonable distances last season with some 3 1/2 mammoth steel. A good bit of advice with steel I've read; always pick 1-2 shot sizes larger than you would usually use, this compensates for the lighter steel load - eg. If you usually use 5's for duck, use 3's or 4's in steel.
  17. Anybody on here starting at newton rigg this September? If so, what course you on? I start on the 7th doing Game and Countryside Management. Also like to say good luck to anyone else starting a gamekeeping/countryside course at any other Uni's or colleges.
  18. I have the same rifle, its a 1500 lightening with a 1:12 twist. I have very good success with Remmy accutips 55gr, very accurate and not over expensive for premium ammo - £16.00 per box. I have only recently switched to Federal 40gr BT, only because my local FD didnt have any Remmys; But I'm more than chuffed with the feds, very flat accurate round that splatters them everytime.
  19. No I wouldnt, I think its only bismuth you can put throught non steel proofed barrels, but just check. I would make sure your just has the adequate proof marks on the bottom of the barrels, make sure it ways steel proof before you put any hevi shot through it. I use Hevi and its really good, hope your guns able to use it. woollyback
  20. So with the new season just around the corner whats everyones first outing going to be? Ducks, geese or both? Anyone bought any new kit; decoys, calls, guns etc. post some pictures up. I've got some new HD pintail decoys to add to my collection, absolutely brilliant quality. But on my shopping list is a new wigeon whistle. Woollyback
  21. The main of my cartridges are hevi shot, 2 3/4 and 3 inch. Also have some of the multi shot, steel/tungsten mix. The worst ones I've chopped up and disposed. Its only light rust on the brass thats all. Given them a light rub with wire wool and they look alot better.
  22. Thats a brilliant head, once in a lifetime. My grandad shot a small palmated head a couple years ago, I'll did out the photo of it and out it up this weekend, think its a 9 pointer.
  23. I've started getting my wildfowling gear together this week ready for the new season and while ratching out my non toxic shells I've noticed a few have a little rust on the brass. What do you do if your shells get a little rusty, are they now useless on the grounds or safety or are they still fine to use? Cheers, WoollyBack
