varminter replied to Mr_Logic's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Hi Mr Logic , Dont think you will be disappointed with the 243 ;) I was going to say 308 as well , now heres the thing!! The other day i was thinking about the 7.62 and my buddies have been on to me about getting a Parker Hale TX1200 / 83 / 84 Model.................. Well i gave in and bought a TX1200 for £200 , and what a bargain!!! These rifles will shoot sub half inch @100yds all day long!!! , there are 4 being used by my friends ( 2 TX1200s 1 M84 and 1 M83 ) , and they all shoot the same load brilliantly!!! Heres some photos........................ I have had the pl -

Well if you are not targeting deer , there are some nice sweet shooting calibers out there!!! , 222 / 223 of if want to keep to a 20 caliber - the Tactical Twenty ( 223 necked down to 20 cal ) ... I must admit , i do like the 6mms and up for Foxes / ground game!! , For instance in my 6PPC - it uses 29.5 grains of powder to drive the 58 V-max at a 3500fps average with excellent accuracy!!!! Have used this on Foxes and Longrange bunnies / magpies and crows , and its a really explosive and humane load!!! I know the 22-250 has a great following with pest shooters , but like most things - its al -

Sorry to hear you are having problems with the 204!!! I noticed that say that want to use it on Deer as well as Foxs / small game!!! , well if money is a bit tight mate why not try and sell the 204 and ( just like someone else mentioned ) get yourself a 243!!! A cracking caliber , you can load the 58 V-max for a devastating Fox and small game load , then load up to 85 - 100 grainers for a nice deer load!!!! I ran the 243 ackley and was very impressed with its performance!! Also i am running the 58 V-max in my 6PPC - a awesome load on Fox / bunnies / crows and magpies!!! All the best... -

tell me about it (skinning) took me fecking ages Freezers nice and full though and so is my belly . As for ammo tried the hornady 17 grain v-max / remington 17 grain v-max , gun favors hornady also tried cci 17 grain TNT ( not bad) and the big surprise was the hornady 20 grain XTPs - gun loved them Dont mind the little noise because richocets are a thing of the past and the bunnies are still good to eat and dumps them big time with flat shooting out to 100yds!!! Anyway HAPPY NEW YEAR to you all and your families Regards......... VARMINTER..................

Hi 6PPC as for powders i went with the crowd and used viht N133 , i have also used exterminator too with the 58 v-max and 65 v-max . When using 28 grains of VINT N133 i am averaging 3300FPS with the 58 v-max and the same charge with the 65 v-max gives me 3200FPS. This with the sako ppc usa cases gives me a fill quite far up the neck. I have been told that when i start using the lapua cases i will be able to get a little more powder in!!! I have ordered a krieger 24 inch 1 in 12 twist with a 270 neck - barrel from callum fergurson for my sako 6ppc and hope to get this fitted some time in oc -

Hi NOMESSIN nnd 6PPC thanks for sharing your 6PPC data. I have found in the 4 years of owning my sako 75VLS in 6 ppc virtually any bullet from 58 grains up to the grainers shoot really well , My rifle just loves a charge of 28 grains of viht 133 a 58 v-max seated to kiss the lands / federal 205 match primers and i use the sako 6ppc usa brass fully prepped but no neck turn. I have tried all sorts of benchrest and other bullets / berger /fowler / nosler /bibs / blitzking to name a few , but have found overall that the v-max are very accurate and are extremely explosive on target , the 65 v-max -

Hi foxshot , regards to buying a 6PPC you will be looking either a custom gun like RPA interceptor which retails around £1700 or you can have a full custom built. Now unfortunately sako have discontinued making the 6PPC and you may be able to get a second hand one but do not let this put you off because i have put over 3800 rounds through mine and its still shooting sweet. This is one hell of a accurate caliber the only downside is the brass is expensive but you do get alot of reloads out of the brass so it balences out. The sako 6PPC USA can be used with sako 6PPC USA brass and you will not -

Hi gentlemen thankyou for your replies!!!!!! Foxshot i agree with 6PPC about tricking up your rifle or you could go for the sako 75vls in 223 this now has the 1 in 8 twist barrel so you can use the heaver vld bullets which give you higher BC and downrange ballistics. This is what varmartin is using and he likes the 60 v-max for varminting!!!! If you do dicide to go the fast twist barrel the 75 a-max would be a serious contender for the longer ranges. My first centrefire was the remington pss in 223 with a 1 in 9 twist barrel , I could use the 50 v-max and the 60 v-max which shot well and i u -

Hi everone just wondering are you using rangefinders / windmeters and ballistic data?? if so what ones are you using??? Myself i am using the lecia LRF 800 rangefinder a speedtech skymate wind meter and am using the JBM ballistics calculator which i have found to be very accurate!!!!!!!! As for rangefinders i have been thinking about the SWARROVSKI 8-30 rangefinder , has anyone got one and if so what do you think of it??? happy varminting!!!!!!!!!!!! -

Hello farmboyuk , glad you like the forum!!!! I am quite new to this site too!!! You say you would like a 243 for long range varminting and are thinking of a 6.5-55 for deer management. If the cost of having the 2 rifles is going to be a issue i am sure you can go for either one for both applications!! If you are needing the 6.5-55 for the heaver deer you can load this with the 140 a-max for varminting. I am running a 6.5-284 with the 140 a-max and it expands great on crows / bunnies / foxes and a great bullet for deer. The thing i like with this bullet it bucks the wind ( BC 550 ) for long -

Hi baldie as for the harrrel powder measure its like no messin says they are very accurate and if you use the finer powders like VIHT 133 / BENCHMARK / H322 - ETC it throws very accurate measures!!!! I use my harrel for loading the 6.5-284 too and all you have to do is make a note of how many clicks on dial on the measure to get the desired weight powder , then dial it in!!! This is very handy if you are loading for different calibers . If you are loading viht 133 for 6ppc then like no messin says you can charge the powder straight into case but when i load with H4831SC for the 6.5-284 i tri -
