The only problem i'm having with a 'fuller' cage than it used to be, is keeping them all inside when you open the door!!! I've noticed a dramatic improvement in morale having more buddies to play with... I also get a 15kg sack of dry (about £13) to supplement diet when my supply of fresh meat runs out, they seem happy enough. One of my jills is also a bit fussy with the real stuff - although she works pretty well!
-
That'll make things easier to decide then! I can probably even work them both before choosing too! I've got them in with the two jills at the mo, but have the ability to close off different areas of my mega-hutch (somewhere between a hutch and a court!) when they need separating. I'm hoping to only need to split the hoblet from the main area...

Hi all, just picked up two young hobs from this years litter and I am planning to vasectomise one and castrate the other (hopefully this should mean minimum separation will be required come breeding season...) obviously I can't have the vasectomy done until full maturity, but will I need to castrate the other before this time? Does castration work better younger as in dogs and horses due to hormonal changes? I'll obviously not be working the hoblet but I'm not sure which I want to work as yet... How long can I wait before making my decision? TIA LERK

Oh and back on the subject of carrying stuff on bikes, i once carried a trombone on a 50cc scooter! as long as you feel safe, go for it!
-
well im 17 when i start and with no noclaims and only a CBT my bike is £362.70 to insure 3rd party fire and theft with 100£ volantary excess. thisc fuguire goes up for less excess etc £100 excess isn't too shoddy Mine's £250, and £400 isn't unheard of. Yep, mine's a £400 excess... on a £700 policy - anyone care to guess what i ride???? And i'm 24 with 7years ncb! Once took on a policy with (if i remember correctly) Equity Red Star, with £650 compulsory excess and they also wanted me to add a voluntary excess of £250! the bike was only insured at £1000 value... Just so that everyone is clear, it is ILLEGAL to poison, or attempt to poison foxes in the UK. Sorry, was a bit of a tongue in cheek comment! hence why it'd need running over with a car... lol Poison is one of my least favourite methods of vermin control, i would much sooner see a clean dispatch whether by gun or (Where legal - of course!) dog.
-
Big stick if you can get close enough, poisoned rabbit carcass or big stick with a pipe on it if you cant... Feel free to 'run over' it in the car too!

254 +2 = 256 mmm memorising, might take a quick byte!

Not scared of her at all, i just use the scruff when i want less wriggling - checking teeth, eyes, ears and claws. and of course when i need one hand to hold a camera phone and therefore need to hold a fast moving ferret still enough to get a photo with one hand!
-
Any particular reason why you are holding it by the scruff mate??? Just to keep it calm and steady for the camera... been using the 'hypnotising' method as part of my handling regime, as well as practicing exiting various hidey holes around the house and calling them to me!

Acquired a buddy for Ethel yesterday, Vera is an entire jill from last year... She's a little on the portly side having been very well fed on a 100% raw diet, so i'm feeding them separately to keep track on what they're eating.

Without knowing the tuning of the standard antenna this would be useless for anything but the rod, unless you have a 'henry meter' the only way to know is count the windings and rebuild to the original spec. Unless someone has fitted one of these as a replacement and can say otherwise...

Sorry just realised your a different person to the other post! Has anyone got a schematic of the circuit board, it'd probably make it easier to work out what the chip is doing before you start trying to work out a number...
-
That's just a ferrite rod onto which they've wound the search coil. If you're feeling industrious you could wind a new coil onto a replacement rod, just make sure you record the winding pattern and number of coils as you disassemble the old one... See, I knew going to tech for 5 years would come in handy at some point!

Thats quite reassuring, your figures work out to a guestimate of 80ml per ferret per day - which is about what mines been going down. For some reason i expected her to drink more!?! Many thanks for everyones help, i will continue to monitor her condition but your comments have helped put my mind at rest.
-
Exactly what i'd have thought... how much is a fair bit though? yeah water is available, wiggle the valve and get a wet finger. Mine's set about 5" from bottom so shouldn't be too bad, but I'll raise the bottle another inch just to be sure.
-
Quick one for you... How much water would you expect a dry fed jill to be drinking? I've got a 600ml bottle in the hutch and the level hardly seems to be going down... I'm monitoring her health and she doesn't seem to be dehydrating; scruff falls back to position rapidly once pinch released. I keep offering a bowl of water and puddle in the bottom of the sink/bath as an alternative, which she doesn't seem to be too interested in either. What sort of height do you set the spout of the bottle? I'm wondering if mine's set too low for her to get under and drink from... Only h

Yep I thought so, although as my cousin pointed out - if she turns out to be a cracking worker, i won't be able to carry on the line... But saves all the hassle of jill jabs or finding a hobble! Just need to find another 1 or 2 now, I'd like a couple of kits come summer too...

Meet Ethel the ferret... She's about 2 years old, and is a spayed jill from working stock but was a pet of an old lady who couldn't care for her properly. A friend of a friend knew i was after one so passed her on to me! Got her yesterday afternoon and have been settling her in and introducing the dog (and vice versa), at the moment i can't decide whether he think she is lunch or just smells interesting... Will be testing her on various pipes etc. to get her ready for an outing on saturday, i'll let you know how it goes

Sounds like an interesting idea... not really had that much experience with ferreting, so i'll leave that discussion upto you!

Thanks for the welcome(s)! Yes, my hunting pals are terrierists... hopefully with a bit of familiarisation we should be able to work them together Still have some work to do on the cub - levelling up by raising corners and dividing screen to split top and bottom sections for breeding season or illness, will also make up a small nesting box for the bottom when in use separately. The Stealth suits the night vision purpose perfectly; short, quiet (now tinkered!) and no nice wood to scrape and ding! The shovel is just a garden tool, we have a shortened bulldogs for digging... Hi there all, just a quick post to introduce myself... My names Antony, i'm 24 and live near Chesterfield, Derbyshire. I've been shooting airguns since i was 17 and have three in the armory; Air Arms TX200HC3-9x40, Air Arms S200 MkII 10-shot 6-24x50, Gunpower Stealth NV rig. I've decided to add another method of dispatching vermin to my list of deadly skills! Having read various books, internet guides and lurking around on here for a while, i'm setting up to get a couple of jills for working and a hoblet. Accommodation is sorted (thanks to a very generous xmas pressie) J
