    Kay, the best thing to do would be to chat up someone who has both lenses in canon fit and try them on your camera or take your camera to a shop & ask if you can try the lenses before you make a decision. That way you'll be able to see exactly what will fill the viewfinder at different focal lengths.

    I was joking when I said about the rats being snake food!!!! My friend keeps snakes and she is very careful about their food source... I think there would be a danger to the snake if they got bitten by a rat? Don't think they would have the same hunting skills as a wild snake... I wouldn't fret too much if the snakes ate the spider though...

    The 18-55 lens is good for landscapes, but you won't be able to focus very close and it won't be much good for bugs. 70-200 or 70-300 would be more suitable for flowers, bugs, and wildlife, and also for the dogs running and sporty stuff. That's the problem with dslrs - you really need several lenses for specific purposes, and it's a bit of a faff carrying them around with you and changing them. You can almost certainly guarantee that you will see the rarest bird on the planet when you have a wide angle lens on the camera I'd probably go for a 70-300 lens with macro facility, althou

    I've made several bottles of sloe gin/vodka already. I've found it's most important to test it daily, straight from the bottle, but you do need to top it up to hide the evidence

    So we can assume that there has been no amending of the rules, and you will be getting rights to all images entered, not just the prize winning photos? Also that you will be entitled to use the images in any way you see fit, including selling them to other publications, and using them for your own publicity with no payment or credit to the photographer? Luckily most photographers have a sense of humour too...

    these are taken with a canon power shot A470 Kay with the camera your using your getting some really stunning shots. I wonder what the shots would be like if you had digital slr with a quality lense?? You have a good eye for a photo and that IMO is the most important part in Photography and it's something that comes naturally as it's very hard to teach. You have a gift, if ever your up my way give me a shout and i'll let you use one of my cameras for a couple of hours. Believe it Kay...

    What make are they? I'm looking for some similar boots, I'd prefer nubuck leather, but I like the look of the soles on those. Price for that style of boot can vary from £40 to £200 upwards

    It's wise to read all competiton rules carefully, and if you don't like their terms, don't enter. Personally I think it's fair if the competition organiser uses the shortlisted & winning pics in their magazine, or website, or whatever, to promote the competiton, but for all entries to be stuck in their image library for future use, with no payment to the photographer doesn't seem right to me Even worse, when they claim the rights to sell the images to other publishers worldwide... just not on really. Must admit Id always assumed dogs were burglar deterrents, not the targets.     Happens with a lot of competitions though... the BBC used to be one of the worst offenders I guess for the competition organisers it's a great way to get thousands of images for free... Most people are so thrilled to see their photos in magazines that they don't consider what effect this kind of rights grabbing has on pro photographers who are trying to make a living from selling photos...

    That's a heartening tale - so often the police don't take stolen dogs seriously, they just treat them as a regular lost dog, "see the dog warden, are you sure it hasn't just run off? etc etc" I'd take it seriously if someone was loitering around eyeing up any of my animals. Get no. plates, photos, descriptions, etc, and make sure your dogs are safe wherever they are.
