  1. To be honest, I've not actually used Gimp, but a lot of people say it's a good program for basic editing. I believe it's free? so definitely worth a try. Picassa is another freebie and ok if you don't want (or need) to do too much editing & make a lot of fine adjustments. Elements is probably the best basic editing software - it's got all the essential bits of Photoshop CS4 but without all the stuff that most people never use. If you want to work with RAW files Lightroom is good, but I prefer Capture One. When it comes to photo editing less is usually more
  2. Yep, it needs a little more of interest in the foreground, maybe there will be some deer around next time you visit The original pic is a bit over-exposed (it looks a little too bright and the colours are a bit washed out). i don't know what program you use for editing, but you may be able to correct this by using the brightness and contrast or the "adjust levels" tools. In the first pic it looks as if the "highlights and shadows" have been adjusted - this has brought out a lighter halo above the trees and darker patches above the clouds. It tends to make the land look very harsh, britt
  3. It's a nice enough shot Kay, and the clouds are impressive, but as you said, it doesn't look quite right... It looks a bit "over-processed". What was the image straight from the camera like? If you want any help, just ask and no doubt someone will be around to answer questions in non-technical terms
  4. Well actually that's one of the more sensible suggestions I've seen on this forum... But, about the dog insurance thing, I don't think it would work because the sort of people (and I use the term loosely) who own these so called "status dogs" most likely would not get them insured anyway. A lot of twats don't even have third party car insurance or MOTs, so they certainly aren't going to get it for their dog... It'll just hit the responsible dog owners who are already covered for third party liability via their pet or home insurance. I agree, just another bloody stealth tax
  5. Don't most people have home & contents insurance? Doesn't the working dog insurance include some sort of public liability? I don't insure my dogs individually but they are covered by the house contents & farm third party insurance. Does this mean that dog owners would need extra insurance as well?
  6. Cracking shots Kay The birds are going a bit mental here too, in spite of the fact that it's still really cold.
  7. What a nice sight to see Good photos too
  8. Don't worry, old fashioned "nursery" puddings still have their place, and all the ingredients for making them are in my kitchen cupboards Restaurant puddings are a farce, and best avoided. My favourite pudding is probably raspberry roulade, but that's a bit posh, and very fiddly to make.
  9. Good for Bill, hope he's okay after all that "excitment"... Can't believe the police even considered prosecuting him, but was there not a little old lady done for prodding a hoodie in the chest recently?
  10. Cracking shots, I love the flying ones, specially the spitfire Bet that sounded good too.
  11. ... at 1/6 of a second wouldn't you have a good idea sooner rather than later? ouch, that hurt gws???
  12. It's a very blurred photo of a painting... doesn't matter why it's blurred, it just is... At 1/6 you're getting into the realms of mirror lock-up as well as tripods... I hate f***ing tripods. Don't push it, I've got a headache
  13. ok, let's see the photo then... oh.... you were hand holding what????
  14. I think you need a little more speed, 1/200 isn't really fast enough for small birds - they are constantly on the move, plus the speed is less than the focal length of the lens, so that will leave you wide open to camera shake problems. Yes, I know you can handhold pics at 1/20th sec, blah blah blah... The late sunlight has brought the colours out well.
  15. well it made me laugh!
  16. The 2nd pic of the starling is ok but the others are destined for the bin I think. What lens and settings? Cleaning the windows would help, or getting off your bum and going outside The last pic would have been nice, but the bird is just too fuzzy. The camera has done well with the exposure though, not easy to get birds against a bright sky.
  17. Lovely shots Hannah, the dogs look to be having great fun My collies herd the swans, they wait until they are quite close to the river before rushing them so the swans tend to just waddle across the field when they see the dogs
  18. Nice shots, don't see many treecreepers these days.
