  1. Yeah, just wish I had a bit more land to go through, its all getting built on now. All the fields where I used to live are gone, and every one of my friends fields got built on. Huge bloody estates. Its a horrible sight when you know what used to be there. But anyway, we'll keep at it until we get something. Might go up to my uncles farm. Thats a lovely dog you have in the picture by the way, I'd love to have a blue dog. bump
  2. Took Murdock out last night lamping, for the second time. Didn't catch anthing but saw 2 big rabbits on the road, was so annoyed I couldn't let him off, one in the back pitches of my school, I let him after it but it was too close to the hedge so it got away. Murdock went mad looking for it though so I guess thats a good sign. A hare ran across the pitch but it was too far away. Went all around the bloody town to fields. I think I didn't go out late enough because the first walk around the back pitches there were no rabbits, but the second time I went back there was a few but they weren'
  3. I wouldn't be consulting a vet about canine nutrition. . . . the majority seem to be worse than useless. AMEN TO THAT! I never cook anything for my dogs. I always feed raw. They are dogs for God sake! I think about half the skin is good to give the dogs (or all of it, whatever). Raw bones are great for dogs. Cooked bones (esp. chicken, rabbit) are very dangerous. Cooking is such a waste of good meat. It kills all the enzymes for digestion and some nutrients. There was actually a test done on cats once - A guy fed one group cooked meat all their lives and the second gro
  4. You've been very lucky then ESS and got soft/easy dogs (not dominant), which most Cockers, Spingers etc. are. If you can get a well trained dog without a long line+prong/flat collar, or an e-collar then brilliant, but theres nothing wrong with using them if they're needed. I would try the longline before the collar. Mainly because of the price, and because as I said, most Cockers would be easy dogs and would probably do grand after some longline training. ANYONE thinking of using an e-collar (I've said it before) MUST buy the DVD of Ed Frawley's on 'training with an e-collar', or at l
  5. Don't think I could kill a fox, they're too much like dogs.
  6. What unusual colours, like a brindle merle mix! Nice dogs.
  7. Ha, just shows how much knowledge the police (and 'gardai') have about dogs.... a police/working dog should come from East German working lines. No show lines whatsoever. A dog can't do both properly, don't care what anyone says. Put under pressure, those police dogs will crack. A lot of American cops have it right. But anyway - I've said it before, but I know of a GSDxDoberman catching hares during the day of his own accord, by running them into herds of cattle to confuse them. If you want a GSD as a worker, get schutzhund lines, esp. East German. Don't get dogs with show titles. St
  8. Ah Jaysus, they're lovely! Is the black one a boy?
  9. All Motivation or postitive-only methods only work if the thing that the dog is ignoring you for isn't self satisfying. For example, if he's more motivated by food than play and you offer him a treat. he'll come to you. But if he has a strong prey drive, he's chasing a rabbit and you call him, forget about it - because chasing a rabbit is more fulfilling than coming to get a treat from you. Thats where corrections come in. Then eventually you can have a dog that works without treats. You will never have a trained dog without some form of correction. Correction and motivation must be used to ge
  10. Thanks very much gsi2000stokie, I'll print all them off!
  11. Something like 'In the big Rock Candy Mountains' (from O Brother Where Art Thou) because hunting your food is old fashioned. Also because it would be kind of surreal if thats the right word, because its a jolly song yet the rabbits getting killed. Or something by Sabbath, Deep Purple - Trashed...some good old Heavy Metal/rock. \m/
  12. Thats a great page. I did it a while a go and got it in one. Some of the dogs on it are so obviously not any type of bull breed....Swiss mountain dog like!? lol
  13. Good idea, but I'd never be allowed get ferrets! My parents don't even like the idea of me catching rabbits! I'm sure we'll find some somewhere though, I don't mind about massive amounts, one every few weeks would even do me.
  14. Cheers mate, thats the sort of stuff I'm after.
  15. Ok, thanks. Theres always droppings on the back pitches of my school come to think of it, and all around the greens. Lol, jayzus can ya imagine I got caught there, hahaha. Might try it anyway sometime!
  16. Thanks mate. Here's the kind of torch I have - http://direct.tesco.com/pi/Product/0/SS082...80TPS313868.jpg Its got a bendy top and is pretty strong, dunno if its strong enough though. Also, wheres the best place to look for rabbits? All the fields we had last night were just cut rape, and overgrown, boggy grass. They are also frequently used fields for dog walking. I'd say a grazed field would be best?
  17. Dobermans are one of the most reliant working dogs ever! And I don't know whats so true to the breed about it switching off. It must have had terrible nerves and been badly trained, or been from English show lines. I don't know about a dobe lamping, but get a European working bred Doberman and it will do anything from pointing to search and rescue to schutzhund. I'm actually trying my dobe at lamping and he's showing great potential. As fast as a greyhound anyway and would have no hesitation about catching a rabbit. fast turning is harder, but I think he would catch a rabbit. (If we could
  18. I have a rabbit skin that I salted a few months ago and now its gone sort of soft and delicate, I know I've only dried it. I've salted it again and it has dried. Theres no smell. I scraped it properly and all before salting it the first time. I got it off a fresh roadkill rabbit and it was my first go, so I'd like to save it. I can't find borax anywhere, does anyone know of another method of tanning skins/pelts? Thanks in advance.
  19. Never been lamping before, but I have a Doberman who goes mad after a torch light so I'm gonna try him out and see if he catches anything. He's really fast, its only twisting and turning which he isn't as agile at. He really needs to do work. I took him out into the fields last night and he was good, waiting when I told him to and came back when I turned the light off. Do you think he'll be good at it? I know someone who had a GSDxDoberman and it was apparantly the best dog for catching hares. It used to run them into a herd of cattle to confuse them! Any advice on lampin
  20. Can dogs die from kennel cough? Vets, etc. make it out to be a massive deal... I'd agree with all thats said there, esp. feed your dogs the best food. Raw meat, bones and veg. After hearing about vaccinosis I'll never vaccinate again. (maybe only parvo) The only problem is with going into boarding kennels. I was nearly refused on the day my dog had to go in because he wasn't up to date on one vaccine, after us bringing him to the vet to get his shots about a week before. Ended up having to call the vet who said the vaccine was a 3 year one. Never putting my dogs in kennels again. I'l
