  1. Great pictures! Gets my blood pressure up a bit!
  2. Pburns, good info. Didn't know you people had a bounty down there. The snaring loss had very little to do with catching any bear or moose. As far as i know only one moose was ever killed in a snare, one dog, two eagles and one lynx. And the snaring was started back in the 70's. The problem was with a few anti's claiming cruelty and the fact that our wildlife department has many who would never support trapping. last year some hunters banned together for a derby to help kill off a few coyote. All forms of hunting would be and was legal ways. A few complained, the State Governor complained
  3. taxidermist friend shot this cat with his dogs in January. This one weighed 36 lbs. but they had taken one that weighed 41lbs. He's entering this cat into a contest. Still work yet to be done on the face.
  4. your 100% trapper aren't you!--That's the proper thing to do. Also run a few boughs through the eyes on the spring for cammo also. We use a trap this size even for the marten. just use a smaller diameter pole at a straighter angle. that way they can't go around. Also the bait would be up next to the trap. This would help keep him no reason to go around. The bait is beaver. best bait there is. put a coon in the tree and it's rare anything will eat it. Deer meat is the second choice. No i've never taken a fisher here, but sure would use the spot in the future.
  5. We have pine marten here also. Wonder if they are the same? Fisher are same family as the marten. Just a bigger cousin!
  6. Used my trail camera on a set we use to catch fisher. We do have problemw now and then of trap avoidance. First time I use the camera and here he is going around the trap. We who trap them often know a steeper and smaller diameter tree is better. After this first time he went up through the trap every time. camera took about 20 pictures of him Should mention that the trap is wired and nailed to the tree so it won't fire as our trapping season is over. This guy probably weighs around 12 lbs>
  7. That's good one 3 year old boy discoverd his scrotum for the first time, Says! Mommy are these my brains? Mothers replies! Not yet son, not yet!
  8. We had the stops for a time, but found out that many coyote were not able to choke down. So the state went with the brakeaways for releasing the deer.
  9. The first guide Walker quides in Quebec in the spring. Last fall he was telling me that he had seen 30+ bear just while traveling putting out bait. So this should be a positive hunt. Walker is a great guy. Caught one of his hounds in a coyote snare once. Made no trouble about it at all. Yenca is the outfitter that will work hard to get you a bear. Only met him over the web. Friends trapped coyote in his area last fall. He helped them out by telling them where the coyotes were hitting his baits. And this was after the trappers had caught his black lab Frank Walker Walker Guide Service 267
  10. Mackem, In my youth bears were thick here. There was no limit or season on the number you could shoot. A $15 dollar bounty was paid for each. The bounty ended in the late 50's After they became a game animal they were thinned out quite well in my area. The best hunting is in Northern Maine. Still lots of bears. If your interested I can give you the name of one outfitter up north that is honest and will work to get you a bear. There are outfitters that are as crooked as the day is long. So you do have to be carefull. Cougar sitings are rare. I've never seen any, but a couple friends have. I'v
  11. That's a nice catch. Congratulations!
  12. Horblower hey! Some of these hounds catch up and kill the coyote, Somtimes the coyote woops their a$$ and sends them packing. I haven't heard of using what you call a lurcher, But then i'm not a houndmen either. Just know quite a few that hunt with them. This land is all woods. very little open land like fields. There were, but people moved out and the forest reclaimed it. In the west they do train eagles to catch and kill coyote. Their coyote are a bit smaller than the eastern breed. This is what the country looks like. Hardwood near the house, but softwood country just north. lots of hills.
  13. You must have been proud of your dog! Good story.
  14. Thanks! Badgeres are tough critters. Do the deer ever get their necks in a fox snare, or are they only getting foot snared.
  15. Same here! They have huge funds behind them. Bring so many lawsuits that the Federal and state governments are locked up in court battles all the time. They sing the cruel song here also. They tried hunting, but have given up on that and are after the trapping, snaring, houndhunting and catch and release fishing. Bow hunting they are supposed to attack next we hear. Snares are by far the best method of taking these coyote, Traps would be a close second with hunting them with hounds as the third best way, Hunting over bait isn't very productive. Lot of woods here. They circle around get your
  16. Here's what a friend of mine said about hounds for coyote hunting. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Al iam checking out your snare tapes they could make an outlaw out of me pretty easy. i run all english walker fox hounds on coyotes. running walkers are use the most to hunt coyotes they are more streamline, good speed and can run for hours at a fast pace. the dogs should be able to run 5 min. behind the coyote if the dogs run too far behind its hard to kill the coyote. some hunters use treeing walkers but these type of dogs are alot slowe
  17. We may have a deal Lets see first if we get our snaring back. if so it would be winter snaring and you'd be traveling by snow sled. We do trap for them from around October 15th until the first of November. you can trap up until the last day of December, but my son and I pull the traps and go deer hunting. In 9 days last fall we took 22 and released two fox. Some years we only get half that amount. It's all woods trapping along logging roads. Alot depends on what the coyote is eating and if he;s traveling the roads. There are several hound hunters in the area. Their luck is spotty. A goo
  18. Here's a couple of those yellow types. both were 40lbs or better
  19. What are the animals that the break aways are for. just curious?
  20. Your right about the weight. Eastern pups can be in the 30lb range come fall. Some of those in the picture went over 50lbs. There have been some that go over 80lbs. recorded. Still the average would be in the high 30 lb range. A True western coyote rarely reach 40 lbs. and are all much the same coloration. The eastern have differnt colors. Anywhere from black to white and every combination in between. just like the wolf, You'll notice in the pic the yellow colored ones. If you averaged $25 U.S. for your coyote last year you did good. Had a couple that went around $40. This year they have g
  21. Fox did take a slight jump at the latest North American Fur Auction in Canada. Prices can be seen in both U.S. funds and Canadian. The have a site if your interested. nafa.ca.
  22. 39 out of the 50 states have some sort of snaring. Some even banned traps altogether, but allow snaring. Maine where I live would only allow us to snare coyote to help out the depleted deer herd in parts of the state. General snaring even for rabbit was stopped years ago here. For what reasons I don't know. These coyote showed up here back in the late 50's. By the mid 70's they were wide spread and hammering the deer herd. Fox nearly disapeared, bobcat populations are only lately making a comeback. The late 50's was the end of bounties that were paid for bear, bobcat and porcupine. Wolv
