Some Aussie Foothold Trapping
Albert Ladd replied to Mitch's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
I'll get back to you Mitch. Just got out of work and waiting for daylight to go hunting. If i get back before dark may be I can set a trap and show how I do it just to compare. -
Foot hold trap pictures
Albert Ladd replied to Albert Ladd's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
I've told in other posts how every year i catch a few hounds and bird dogs in these trap, The hounds are hunted the next day, and this comes from the owners telling me this. So if the traps did the damage the antis would like you to believe the hounds would bve running around on 3 legs. Damage and the cruel part does come after an animal is in a trap for days, That's why i agree with a law here in the eastern US that has you check every day. -
Hope these pics clear up and show that the newer style is much more friendly to an trapped animal than the older style, But there are traps that were made even back in the late 1800- early 1900 that are quite humane or foot friendly. Some of these were used to catch wolves for fitting tracking collars recently in our western states. These actually have teeth, but are not sharp, more blunt in design. Old new house traps! Here is one of the more modern design traps that have the laminated jaw and space between the jaws once the trap is closed Same trap closed with my hand in it. A

Few trapping pics from the State Maine
Albert Ladd replied to Albert Ladd's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Millet, Haven't any traps out at the moment, but will in a few days. I'll take a few pics to show you how they are set. Ones with a drag and ones that are staked in place. -
Welcome Idyhoe. I'm not a regular here, but drop in from time to time. You have freedoms in Idyhoe that most of these folks can only dream of. Heck! You got freedoms even us guys on the east coast envy! Welcome!

Few trapping pics from the State Maine
Albert Ladd replied to Albert Ladd's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Thanks for the comeback Millet, shows you are interested in learning. And thanks to all the support from the other members on here! Can’t deny that things “Accidents†can still happen with traps, but ther's a lot more cruelty from animals getting hit by cars and crawling off into the woods with broken legs and backs than there are by traps.= I’ll take a few pictures of the traps in a day or to show the difference in the old verses the newer type. Thanks again! -
Few trapping pics from the State Maine

Let me clear something up. The coyote with only 3 legs was not caught in a trap. The bottom of the stump has mud on it not blood. The injury was old and all healed and fured over. About half the traps are on drags, I’d rather stake them, but because of thieves and trigger happy bird hunters we drag what we can’t check before 9am. In the last several years of trapping I haven’t had a broken leg on a coyote, fox, or cat. And I’m talking a few hundred animals. Had two dislocated shoulders, one from the coyote jumping off a bridge. My traps are the modern type with lamina -
Great pitures congratulations. Any shot I get is hardly ever over 100 yards. Woods are thick mostly from re-growth. The deer can be a few feet yards away and you can't see them.

Haven't visited this site since last summer, Thought I'd post a few pics that may be of interest. Hope all your snares and traps have been full Bobcat I had to release. The cat season didn’t start for a couple more days. 40 pound male coyote that wasn’t happy at all. Barked, howled and snarled. A 35 pound female that put on a show. 3 legged coyote. Had about 6inches of wet snow, luckily it stayed soft till it melted two days later, Then this road was a muddy mess. My son Steve holding the trap and 4lb drag. The coyote was caught at the top of the road in the

Close encounter raises concerns about wolves
Albert Ladd replied to Albert Ladd's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I agree! I wonder what Rey would do if that wolf turned into a family group and started ripping his dog apart. -
Close encounter raises concerns about wolves
Albert Ladd replied to Albert Ladd's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Good story Rey! Looks like you got dogs that would hold their own on a wolf. Not sure what Rey will say, but from what I read game was a little thin before the wolf introduction, and now the situation is worse. -
Thought you houndsmen might be interested in this story. Wolves are killed dogs in peoples yards as well as hounds in the field. A real controversy in our country. Picture on the bottom shows what was left of one dog after the wolves had a feast! Close encounter raises concerns about wolves http://idahopress.com/articles/2006/06/05/news/news3.txt All the while I was screaming louder than I ever screamed in my life. Without any thought I picked up a 4-foot stick, stepped toward the wolf, swung and hit a tree. When the branch went crack and the tree went thud, the wolf instantly

Same old problems over here. These anti's have the funds and lawyers behind them. We trappers, hunters are a small lot and it's a hard thing to convince the uninformed what we do is needed and right. Most voters have not a clue! Plus our wildlife departments are loaded with anti sympathizers, or are anti's themselves. I grew up with grand farthers that pretty much lived off the land, Fished hunter trapped game. logged to live and support the family. Later years I stuck by the laws. But things are so screwed up that I've come to the conclusion that you just have to live and do as you ple

Academic question about snare materials
Albert Ladd replied to Coote's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
I may have posted this before, but the indians in our area used to spend summers along the coast. Winters they moved inland a lived off moose mainly. They used snares, probably from strips of other moose? attached to a drag. The drag would be a small tree. They then would finishes the moose off with spear and bow. An old friend a Mic-mac indian told how his grandfather would use rope to snare moose in the same way. He then would snowshoe near the moose and finish him with an axe. -

They'd do well over there with all them rabbits you have. Turn several breeding pair out, and in 10 years you'd be over run with them. -

have you had any black coyote's? or black wolves? my mate up in North wester Canada has snared black wolves and coyote's usually get the normal dark grey, but snared red 1'sin lower mainland i go out trapping with him every year, snaring coyote's trapping racoon's and snaring and trapping beaver. the heaviest beaver we've trapped is 84 pounds, coyote's in the lower mainland are roughly 25-30 pounds. but up in the north where my friend Peter lives now the coyote's weight up to 45-50 pounds iv seen wolves that have been snared over 150 pounds, eastern coyote's can weigh up to over -
Same thing happens over here. People just can't leave things alone. I've been lucky. Lost several traps in the last few years. mostly from people out with dogs and get peaved when fido gets a paw in a coyote trap.

Another lesson learned from P/G I wonder how this material would work on beaver under ice?
-
Amazing! You'd make some of the old fox trappers over jealous. Nice work

Silver are far and few between over hear. Great catch!

Yes we have a small camp on a pond. Good fly fishing area with 4 ponds all close by. Brook trout, except this one has "Silver char" also. Looks something like a trout without spots. Live down deep most of the year. These pics where taken about a month ago. My grandson is up on the snow drift. Ice should be out in about two weeks if the warm weather holds. 5 years ago the pond wasn't free of ice untill the first of june. Someyears snow from these drifts will still be there the first of July.

Trail camera pictures
Albert Ladd replied to Albert Ladd's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
This Cudde back came from Cabela's. High priced, but It comes highly recomended. For some reason bear like to chew these things to bits. Sure hope that don't happen to me. -
Set out my trail camera on April 5th. Made a bait set just as we would when trapping coyotes. The bait is under that big rock that the turkey is walking by. The coyote was either not interested or the flash spooked him. The deer looks to be last years fawn. The turkey has been gobbling all day behind my house. Turkey season starts May1st The bait, some old bait that was hanging around was placed under the rock where the turkey is walking by. Ole coyote after 3 days doesn’t want nothing to do with it, or the flash spooked him. He never returned.
