  1. Have to agree with Mr. Logic. One other method that I use is that I know the size of my quarry in my scope, and that tells me the distance. A mil dot or graduated scope makes a nice difference.
  2. From the list of replies, perhaps I misunderstood the question, but I will take a crack at it. I would say that there are usually two zero points. If a rifle is zeroed in at 300 yards then there is another "zero" much closer to the rifle. This first (closer) zero is not the same on all rifles, but differs depending on rifle and ammunition, bullet and powder, whether shooting in elevation or on the level, etc. If the rifle is zeroed in at a far distance, when the bullet leaves the rifle, it has to rise through the line of sight, then fall back down to the target. When it rises th
  3. I certainly can understand that!!!
  4. Hey Ferreterni, I don't understand everything that you said, but thanks. I am not very familiar with all the terms that you folks use over there, but I am hoping to learn. Is "marking" a hole, telling you what hole to hunt? "Following the action below ground", does this mean that the dog will move alone on top of the ground with the ferrets below ground? What is "holds them in net"? Thanks!
  5. I have never owned a PitBull, but I have owned and trained many Rottweilers, (both breeds seem to have the media licking their chops over here), and I would dare say that it is not a bad breed or a dangerous breed. It is a breed like others, and with proper breeding and handling, there is no more danger than any other breed in general. JMHO
  6. I am also interested in learning about these dogs???
  7. Hey Ferreterni, What exactly is ferreting with a dog? Is it when you send a ferret down a hole and the dog waits for the rabbit to bolt?
  8. Hey JRT, Nice dog! Do you get the chance to work him much? I am still interested in finding out what age that I can expect that my JRT's will start showing interest in foxes, and what age that I should let them take on such quarry? Can you give me an idea??? ... Hey, just found the answer on the "age to enter" post http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/index...showtopic=53834 Thanks
  9. Sorry, local slang. I don't know any other way to describe it so I will try to explain. I am sure everyone is aware, I don't mean to offend, but I have no idea how to explain it any other way. So here it goes... When an animal is frightened, running or being chased, the flood of hormones such as adrenalin, uric acid, etc, builds up under the hide. This also happens if the shot was not well placed and the animal experiences a slow death, or struggle. The longer the hide stays on the animal, the more of the hormones that the meat will absorb. This is what gives wild game that 'livery'
  10. Yellowknife, Northwest Territories is home. You are welcome to drop in anytime, although this summer I am visiting relatives in the south. Winter is really the only time to come to the north. Can't do anything, but fish and swat mosquitoes in the summer. Of course fishing is good too. We need a little fisherman emoticon for this site!
  11. Howdy There's loads of information on this site. I am sure that you will meet up with someone from your country that can make things easy for you. Personally, I think if you are looking for the best taste, nothing beats shooting. A good quick kill. But snaring is by far my preference for volume, and to ensure meat on the table.
  12. last time i measured mine he was "12" (7months oa) hes arround 20 months now not sure how tall he is but he can get into some very tight spaces Is yours a long legged or short JRT?
  13. Hey Terrier Man, thanks for the info. What age do you suggest? As for the rabbits, I was just happy that these dogs started to show some interest already. The real test will come when we get back home, though I seriously doubt that they will be able to catch the hares up north.
  14. I work with fur all the time, but I would never call myself good. There are guys here that are just amazing, and I could never hold a candle to. I can prepare and tan hides and make them usable, rabbit hides make good mitten/glove liners, but that is a long way to send them. I would imagine that there would have to be some kind of export/import license to deal with, going to a different country. But if you can find a way to get it over to you, or if you ever find yourself in this neck of the woods, I would be happy to fix you up!
