  1. HAs anyone used the humane game dispatchers ( I think the brand is Armadillo) They are Like a plier type arrangement that you uputh ebird's head in , beak down and when you close the handle it puts a spike through the back of the bird's head. it's supposed to be humane and kill instantly. I'm not keen on spinning a pheasant round by its neck until it breaks. Happy to wring the neck but if the dispatcher is quicker/kinder I might get one. Any thoughts?
  2. You'll get plenty of offers of help, I'm sure
  3. That's too intellectual for me, I'm usually doing something practical while that's on - skinning, gutting, cooking, DIY or something. Tonight I painted a wall to watch it dry as I had nothing better -
  4. Lots of comments on a number of threads about this one. The Blonde girl should have been on Big Brother she was just like that Nikki one. Interesting with these programmes how some people like meat but don't want to hurt Bambies, Bunnies, birdies etc. Just served up a lovely mixed game casserole to the family tonight - rabbit, pheasant, duck & pigeon, all killed by me and my lad. Wife and daughter wolfed the lot without a tear. The only thing my wife rejected was the spuds as she's on a low carb diet!
  5. She just seemed like a failed Big Brother contestant. These programs are really interesting. As with the first series in an abbatoir I think it's good to see people have their views challenged, i.e that animals are cute, cuddly things and meat comes in pastic trays with bar codes challenged and the two aren't connected. Just a shame it's tucked away at 10:00 on BBC 3 rather than 8:00 on BBC1
  6. Know Oswestry well; used to run my business from there. Some very good shooting to be had in the area. Not the Brynkynallt shoot is it? No. Its the Llanforda estate
  7. the shoot is near oswestry. I've only been shooting a couple of seasons and am not yet plugged into the scene in Llan. As usual I got into this syndicate through word of mouth, and don't know any shooting people in Llan
  8. We're flushing one or two on almosst every drive at our shoot, probablby shot half a dozen. I've got one in the freezer as its the first one I've shot and want to see if it tastes as good as people say - Anyone got any recipes?
  9. I bought some poles from Wilkinsons at £2.99 each. They come in various solours including dark green. Looked on a few websites and saw some that look exactly the same but sold as hides pole at £11.99 each!!!
  10. I've made something similar from a full body deek. Holes drilled in shoulders and aluminium tube pushed through. Next plastic a rod inserted through the tube and wings made of balsa wood with surfaces sanded to catch the wind and painted. Seems to work in the garden but haven't had the chance to get out in the field with it properly as I've been too busy after the pheasants and duck.
  11. Had an "outside day" on the syndicate I joined this season. 1st season with this syndicate, second season shooting. Overall bag was 15 brace mallard and 14 brace pheasant. with a few odds thrown in. I managed 3 pheasant, 1 mallard, 1 teal and 1 woodcock 1st woodcock too, so that & te teal are hanging in my game fridge with a brace of mallard to be plucked tomorrow. Need some woodcock recipes now ( and a couple more to make a dish for two). Some cracking shooting, one gun had a fantastic right & left of mallard. Didn't get the pics though - sorry guys. Th
  12. Have a look on the JBSnets web site plenty of choice there for materials and quick turnround on orders. I've used their 6z and 10z spun polypropylene and nylon, both produce good nets (well at least the materials is good, can't promise about the workmaship
  13. At first glance that looks ridiculously cheap - I'll be on the phone tomorrow!!!! Cheers Interested to get some feedback on question B though
  14. I've just got into pigeon shooting through a mate and have got to say, although it may be the novelty at the moment, that I am enjoying it more than the driven pheasant I'm doing too. Maybe I'm just too common for pheasant. Anyway I've had a go at making my own deeks and although not bad I think its not worth the hassle. Now I need to get my own hide materials together. Have got canes/poles and some clips and cord to tie up to trees , branches etc. My queston is :- a where is the best place to but camo material for hides (ebay is full of the stuff but some of it looks scrappy surp
  15. ] Had a look ther - very interesting I've always lie Golden Retrievers. Did a quick Google and came up with Norden lights breeder/trainer. For a trained dog he's talking £4000-£5000!!!!!!!! Might nip down to the RSPCA rescue centre and see what's available - Alternatively an ESS pup and some trainingg might be more economial. I do fancy a retriever though
  16. Hadn't thought of that. I have read that flat coats can be "slow to mature". Are working golden retrievers more slender than show trains like working labs tend to be compared to show labs?
  17. I know Sapniels are great for beating and Labs for retrieving, HPRs for rough/walked up shooting. My question is what is the best for a peg dog? Most of my shoot members have labs (black with the occaisional Yellow, but NO chocs). I'm quite fancying a flat coated retriever as something a bit different. Are they god for peg dogs or are they better for picking up? Anyone any sugestions?
  18. I use my black & decker hot air paint stripper. Put in a vice and turned to blow upwards. works a treat.
  19. At one point all 6 ferrets were down. There were too many holes to count - the place is honeycombed, which is whiy we brought the long nets as there' s no way we would cover all the holes. There were pop holes in the field but also others under piles of cut wood. I think before we hit it again properly we'll need to do some tidying up so we can totally enclose the area with longnets
  20. Well went out with two mates, my lad and his mate. 6 ferrets 30 purse nets and two long nets. Result = 9 rabbits. We know the area is crawling with bunnies! There is one area that we ferreted with all purse nets and a long net. All ferrets were down at the same time. but only 1 rabbit caught. The place looks like a model of the moon surface as there are so many tunnels that have collapsed in the sandy soild and so many intact tunnels that we think thebunnies wre just running the ferrets around underground. More success along some hedgerows and there are a few areas
  21. Was out last saturday night with my son and a shooting pal. We have permission on 130 acres in Shropshire, which has a golf course on it. Anyway, I ran a 75yd quickset net out in one corner of the golf course while my son and my mate took the his spaniel round to another corner to run the other 75 yarder. Once I'd set my net out the plan was to leave that in place then join my lad and mat to push the rabbits into their net then come back and push into mine - BIG mistake. Firstly my walkie talkie had packed in so a I waited for about half an hour under the trees waiting for a call

  23. Really useful debate here lads, exactly what I think the forum is for. Asa beginner at the longnetting lark it's certainly helped me. Planning otbe out at the weekend so may put this to use. Cheers
  24. That's something I've been fancying for a while. Looks real fun. Trouble is I keep spending my money on shooting stuff. Some pics of teh action would be good!
