Dont put them on anything just Email them direct to someone like boots http://www.bootsphoto.com Eamonn
  6. I’m training a 5 month old pup at the moment. I think a dog whistle is better than calling his name as it carries better in the wind and the sound is consistent – the dog wont sense that you are getting more and more pissed off when he wont return. Even though you don’t hit him he will know from your voice that you are not happy. I have my whistle attached to my coat zipper so its easy to find. I practice recall all the time inside and out. Best to start when he looks like he is about to come back to you anyway – when he does come make a fuss and give the odd treat. Eamonn
  7. I use a dried food base to which i add fresh meat/fat and bones depending on season ie butchers waste, rabbits etc + cooked vegtables, the odd egg any table scraps are given as well. The dried feed gives a baseline that can then be individualised to any adult given dogs requirements. In simple terms increase protien while building up, increase fat in colder weather or if lots of stamina type work, increase carbs for lots of sprinting while balencing the others out so to not over/underfeed. Used to use a lot of fish and tripe but the supply dried up but giving a good variety is a good way of co
  8. Thanks lads Looks like dried meat is a very bad idea and there are plenty of sources for fresh meat – just needs a bit of effort on my part. I’ve also been told that someone has a van at the local greyhound track selling meat so I’ll try that as well . Eamonn
  9. Last year I managed to video one last year swimming in the sea and eating a fish after watching it for a few days. It wasnt bothered by me at all as it made its way up the coast. I walk along that stretch of coast a every weekend and I spotted it again a few weeks ago. The image is crap as it was surfacing and diving quickly and I dont have a zoom but I got in real close with the video. Eamonn
  10. Just from past experience it may contain little in the way of meat and a lot in the way of conective tissues + when I used it some years ago it tended to cause scouring. As a part of the diet I'm sure it would be fine but when compared to frozen pet mince or complete feeds it may work out rather expensive without giving any nutritional gain. A good complete tailored to age and exercise will contain very similer nutrients for a lot less money. If fed in the right quantities it shouldn't result in buckets of crap as many would have you believe as this tends to happen only if over fed.
  11. Thanks Sandy Looking at the other posts on feeding you certainly seem to have spent a lot of time and effort researching this topic. Why should dried meat only be used in exceptional circumstances? Is full of crap eg salt or does the drying process extract most of the goodness? Eamonn
  12. Thanks for the replies. Problem is I don’t normally go to a butchers and the supermarket ones look at you as if you have two heads if you ask for a dog bone. I tried the frozen mince but its not that easy to store. The dried meat is unlikely to go off and its supposedly very high in protein. The hot water softens it quite quickly so I think I’ll make a dog stew with it and add in a bit of veg or rice. The pup seems to like the softened meat and he gets enough fresh meat anyway from table scraps as I nearly put my kids off meat altogether by buying day old chicks and then rearing/slaughter
  13. Thanks Diggermad I'm not switching to a complete dry food diet just thinking of changing the meat bit to 'dried meat'. I was thinking that the frozen meat might be pumped full of water and the dried meat might be better for the dog. Eamonn
  14. I have been feeding my 5mth old whippet pup a whole range of stuff including eggs, fish, dog biscuits + leftover rice, pasta & veg, but mostly he gets minced meat which I buy frozen from the pet shop. I also give him SA37 in case I miss anything. He is doing well on this, full of energy and looking toned and healthy. The pet shop also sells dried meat which would be much handier to store – does anyone see any problems in switching from the frozen meat to the dried or should I just continue what I’m doing? Eamonn
  15. I keep mine in an 6ft high enclosed + roofed wire pen with the roost and nest boxes inside . I let them out every day but if I cant for some reason then at least they can move about. The roof keeps the foxes out and means that straw and wood chips stay dry and clean for longer. Eamonn
  16. Nice work - keep it up, get yourself a good hard backed sketch book and draw something from life every day, even if its only a 5 min sketch Eamonn

  18. I walk my 4 mth old whippet pup along a coastal path (sea on one side and sheep wire on other) to get him used to a bit of free running and recall. He stops dead in his tracks and sits down when he sees sheep in the field not sure what to make of them. Given half a chance I’m sure he’d love to run after them and may do just that when his confidence grows. I also have him jumping 2ft barriers at home so the fence wont contain him much longer. At the moment I sort of growl at him a tell him to leave it – what is the best way to introduce a pup to stock if I want to prevent problems happe
  19. Vet says its not ringworm or anything like that they are just caused by him running into things. So no treatment necessary and the no charge. Eamonn
