  1. Definately not zander, never had a chance to fish for them but would have liked too, but would decimate trout stocks in the waters. Watch a cook on the wild side with hugh. Locals catch em and hoof em over the hedge. lovely looking fish though. Miss out on chub loads since I moved over, great fish to catch, and stalk on small rivers.
  2. If it's broken to your ferrets why don't you take it out for rabbits and see how it goes. I use a wee russell for ferreting and she great dog for the job. Especially as most of my work is hedgerows.
  3. Not always as easy as that, have been waiting for the farmer to cut barley in one field so I can get at the small bury in the hedge there, and now they have a herd of bullocks in the field other side of the hedge haha get to it evenyually.
  4. Just pleased that she finally cottoned on. Thought she would be a dud for a while there. Not much more exciting than seeing a dog run quarry, and hopefully I can get her a run or two at foxes this year. I know they are supposed to be common enough at the minute. Be happy for rabbits for now though. Have to make sure it wasn't just a one off hahah Have you had any runs out yet?
  5. Went out for first night on the lamp. Just a wee run round a few fields. The lurcher will be 3 in jan and this will be her first proper season working. Had a few runs last year but not enough. So really want to make something of her before she is to old. The conditions tonight aren't perfect, dark enough but no wind and slight showers. Thought I'd go anyway. Went into the first field and had a scan with the lamp and a couple of dots in the middle of the field, but the owner had buggered of before I got to it. 1-0 to bugs. 2nd run was a little further on with a rabbit that ran straight
  6. you were lucky. My new hob kit got out of his new cage and I found him drinking with the dogs at the water bowl. But half hour after that a neighbour came tosee if I had lost any cos they had a ferret chasing them up their hallway. Luckily they were ok about it. Lucky he came back to my yard though. Little buggers haha
  7. Keeping them excersised will help loads. Mine goes crackers when not excersised as much, and will start fights with the other dogs. Will all come good in the end though i'm sure. If h eretrieves take a ball perhaps, you can run him twice as much for the distance you have to walk.
  8. You wouldn't think it would happen, but I have seen a cat chase a fox out of a garden, and chased it down the road for a wee stretch. Couldn't believe it and not seen it again since.
  9. As prohunter says, just a terrier being a terrier. Keep working at it, Could be age. Has the dog been entered on anything? Have read before that terriers like this can settle once entererd to rats. Give it a focus. I found that when mine was starting to come round that as long as I never let her get to far she would recall perfect, but after a certain distance she was deaf hahah Or you could try doing what the trainers say to do, run backwards waving your arms and yelling. Or have something of interest to the dog on your person.
  10. I have a wee jrt that was a treat to work with, recall perfect retrieved great etc. Then she hit around a year old and decided to ignore me and do her own thing. Drove me nuts, so i kept her on a long line for a wee while, but she came good after a month or so. Think she just did a lurcher thing and had a stroppy teenager stage. She been as good as gol again since then and she 3 and halk now. So maybe you just have to persevere for a while and wait till it grows out of it.
  11. Rabbits a bit low on ground round here, so dry food is very handy, but Kitten food works out cheaper than dry ferret food in the pet shop which is around £5 for 1.5 kilos. The local butcher is handy as I can get scraps, and chicken carcasses for free, if in the town at the right time. Carrier bags full of it.
  12. are we getting mixed up here people, the top of page post relates to FERRETS, yet above quote is feeding dogs, which then josiesmom is thinking the poster is feeding veg and garlic to ferrets OH dear! I surely wouldn't want to be in the same vehicle with your dogs! can't even imagine the smell they must make! Dogs might be able to handle garlic and onions- but vegetables aren't good selections for ferrets and garlic can cause anemia. I have to agree that a natural diet of whole prey is best for the ferrets and if you can't do that raw meaty bones - don't have to be minced
  13. Wouldn't give rspca the steam of my sh*t. Used to work in pet trade, and they would do yearly inspections. One of my bosses, a big reptile company, we had them turn up demanding to inspect the site. He told em to f*ck off unless they were accompanied by old bill. Didn't see em again. As I always say you wouldn't let cancer researche collectors come into your house and take your fags would you?
  14. I use redmill racer, for all my dogs, lurchers and terriers. Would rather feed barf, but not able too. After trying different brands redmill is best for me. £11 a bag, and does juat under a fortnight for 4 dogs. 1 lurcher, 1 terrierxspaniel, 1 collie, and 1 jrt. I also use a lot of veg when I can, and when roasting meat will throw a few cloves of garlic and onions in roasting tin with veg, then add stock cook down and let food soak in that before feeding, do that couple times a week. Garlic good for em.
  15. Sorry, meant out doors. Can nuke any that get in doors haha
  16. What time of year do these wee buggers start to die down? Noticed the air at night getting crisper so hoping it will start to kill them off so I can start getting out again.
  17. not a jrt, dunno what she is, but she black and shaggy when not clipped for a while. Meant to see the dam ( terrier) when i bought her, but got talking bout his lurchers and forgot to look, so not sure what terrier she is. But a very good dog.
  18. Got it for bushing rabbits and foxes mainly, but she smart. Her mouth is solid, but she is very soft mouthed for retrieving, and retrieves live any sitting rabbits she gets. Just am going to get a shotgun eventually and know she will be a good gundog, if somewhat uncouth haha
  19. does anyone have any luck using springer crosses. I have a spaniel terrier cross that i use for bushing, but she would respond to formal training well.
  20. That is a really nice pic there. Seems that dogs take to the ferrets well. Amazes me that 2 or more different sspecies can all work together and learn to trust each other to do the job. I know it's pack instincts in dogs, but to get the ferrets doing it to is great.
  21. dodgeball? aye. I got better runs in my shorts
  22. know no7 but cant remember it.
  23. My jrt 100% with ferrets, lurcher turns out is bit yellow with em haha My terrierX spaniel is ok, but a bit excitable, not harmfull at all just to big to play with em, and the collie is obedient enough to leave em alone but I lifted ferret in front of it the other day and she jumped up a bit, needs a bit of work with em. what do you all expect of a ferreting dog? Terrier or lurcher, or any breed? edited due to bad spelling
  24. it's like a bunch of retards trying to f**k a doorknob and son, you're about as useful as a co*k flavoured lollipop.
