My wife's collie is a gem for training, smart as a tack. I just can't gel with it. I parted ways with a bull wheaten lurcher and I regret it dearly. I have a terrierX spaniel that will physically at times be a spaniel, but is a terrier and I have a wee jrt who is a shit! The terrier crosses I get on with, but the collie is too soft. The old man had a collie whippet when I was a nipper and was a great dog, but I seem to get on better with terrier X's. But I like the brains and obedience that the collie shows, and she is 1st class for bushing, will put a new hole in a hedge to get throu

What area that shop in? Used to be in pet trade and know you could get meerkats, red squirrels, glis glis even racoons but never heard of mongoose. Tempting though haha A man down my direction, Theres nothing he doesnt keep! There actually quite nice, But need "Socialising" as he put it, A diplomatic way of saying there bad b*****s! Haha I wouldn't fancy my chances haha Nice creatures that they are. Amazing what people will pass on, I know that recently ( 3-4 year) ago a bloke in this area was selling male chimps at a very silly price. Think he has been shut down since haha bu

different styles of hunting with terriers
ferreterni replied to burrowman's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
I think I would have a similar style too yourself. I let the dogs do their thing, and try and be quiet. None of them head to far out of sight unless in woodland. They all return promptly on a whistle. I let them do what they think is best, they have the better noses. They don't seem to want to go too far from me anyway. I tryu to get into a place that I can see well, and just let them go do what they want. All of them are under control, and it pays well, cos I have had the terrierXspaniel lift sitters out of long grass that I wouldn't have even looked at, amd nothing out of cover I have enco -
Had to part ways with my lurcher a wee while back, and regret it. My old man keeps telling me to get a Collie whippet but not sure. The wife has a collie and it is smart as anything she has it doing tricks and all sorts. And she is a mean bugger in scraps with the other dogs. Fast too. But I find her too sensitive for me, I only have too look cross and she hunkers down. All my dogs are and have been terriers, terrier x's and terrier lurchers. What are the colllie whippets like, are they too sensitive? I am not hard on my dogs, but terrier temperaments suit me better, even if I am told th

jrt starting to go to ground
ferreterni replied to ferreterni's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
At the moment on the bit of ground I have. I know that all the rabbit warrens aren,t that deep. And only are rabbit holes. So not to bad if she enters as noever that deep. I have been expanding though and some new rabbit holes are a bit ambiguous as to what can be using them, so will probably keep her back from that ground until I get a collar for her. I am in the middle of sheep country and at the right time of year I can hear the foxes calling from my front door step, so I know they are there haha -
jrt starting to go to ground
ferreterni replied to ferreterni's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
mine is coming 4 years old now, but has seriously switched on this year, again likely cos she been doing more. She is only around 10" tts so has no trouble with the smaller holes. I know that jrt's aren't always as popular as other breeds and as much as I like patts myself, and am tempted to get one in the future, I will probably always stick to the russels. Just need to get a good line going. Although I dont know how well the shorter legs cope in certain situations. -
jrt starting to go to ground
ferreterni replied to ferreterni's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
Hope she takes off, bit slow to start, but to be fair I only started to do more with her this season. -
My wee jrt bitch that I have used mainly for bushing and a bit of ferreting has started of late to go down holes. Started to go down once the ferrets had been through and the other day scented around a rabbit set and then flew straight down the hole. She started digging herself at bolt holes too and after digging with her, we come to chambers with bedding materials. Only small holes so assume they where rats. Then on mooches is going down some and leaving others. Am very pleased that she is starting to do this too, as I never thought she would. Will be buying a collar and hope to get a bit o

50yrd 6oz Quick set with fibreglass poles
ferreterni replied to Fat-Ferret's topic in Optics and Night Vision
You have great patience! Keeps me busy over the summer, never made a 50 mter net. Summer is on it's way though. -
I am asking on behalf of someone, He has been told that you can't get a silencer for his 22 magnum bruno rifle. Only something to take the edge off it, is this true? Or is it possible to get something to really quieten it down? Thanks in advance for any help.

For anyone that is interested or still interested in this bitch she is still for sale. Thought i would keep her on as my ground increased but still can't find the time to give her all it needs. Has had another run at fox since last post too. Will take £100 for her too. Just as long as its a working home she's for and someone will give her the work.

After asking about permission in northern ireland on here, houndman left me a number to contact him. I rang it and he arranged to lift me the next day for a day out with them. I would like to say thank you, for a very enjoyable day. With good dogs and good dog men. Couldn't have met a friendlier crowd all intent on working their dogs well. Thank you too for giving me a chance to try my dog. Again a big thank you, and if ever there's space again for me and my wee scabby dog haha then i would jump at the chance to see more dog work with you and yours. Thanks.

me and my terrier and johns new terrier
ferreterni replied to whippetmike's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
good to see more terriers and ferrets working together. -
not bad for insurance. Am thinking of getting guns too, easy to get into clay shooting. Need to look into it because I think it will be easier to use an o/u to get permit using clays as reason for gun. But it's a s/s I plan to get. farmers round here are pretty decent, and I think if I can fall in with one then doors will open everywhere, just getting nerve up to ask. They can only say no I suppose.
