first pup what age is best to start work?
moonlighter replied to cookie 2's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
i start my dogs early, but i dont mean lamping rabbits as in my neck of the woods they are never far from cover and take some catching for a pup. I take them out bushing from an early age, getting them use to hunting up and using there nose. they soon learn to find young rabbits, pheasants and moorhens and it seems to make mine keen as hell. the pup ive got know went lamping at about 10 months but only once a week for 2 or 3 runs. I offen spent more time in the van driving to the lamping field than i did lamping but i feel it pays off in the long run. -
day old chicks are good for young ferrets for the first few weeks coz they are soft and easy for them to eat. nothing goes to waste and attracts flys like a rabbit can. then when they get bigger rabbits and pigdeons are great food for them. I normally feed the rabbit heads to the ferrets and the rest to the dog but it depends how many i catch. also dry ferret food is handy in the summer coz i dont catch much at this time off year. as a treat a raw egg in a bowl goes down well too. Hope that helps.

turk , i have been reading all these threads about golly and all that has been said about golly from other members . so i have a question for you... was golly the best dog dog on your yard ????? the reason i ask the question is , over the last 2 season's , i have been out with a very good mate of mine who now has ricky and have seen this dog work night after night day after day with no bother at all with him , he has never refused anything that has been put in front of him, i have never seen a bull x whip rabbits up like he does and bring them back live to hand .... yet every time

hi all. just a quick question...will mark 1 collers work with a mark 3 locator box. cheers.

in my opinion, most game/vermin that gets away is not down to lack of speed from the dog......its more down to lack of stamina or the prey dodging and using the land/cover to its advantage.......therefore a lurcher will catch far more than a greyhound.....thats why lurchers were invented...

i got my dog at 8 weeks old from ginger and he looks like a pure saluki,...but im not bothered though as he turned out to be one hell of a dog. he did have a few pure saluki about the place at the time though so you never know with him how your dogs bred. but like i say, who cares as long as it turns out ok.

many moons ago, my dog hit me full pelt while we was lamping.......ended up in casualty with a dislocated knee cap and the poor old dog was laid up for a while too....

Collie/Greyhound X Bedlington/Greyhound
moonlighter replied to sniper's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
i had dogs of this breeding years ago, and they were fantastic dogs. they took all quarry. they caught many hares too but not up to the standard of my saluki x that ive got now. mind you its hard to compare dogs of different eras, and i was only young at the time and was still new to it all. A good dog man from my area had 2 of the pups and these fantastic little dogs started the base for many generations of lurchers, both lamping and competive coursing dogs. -
why dont we start a thred on dog fighting........ .Surley no one in there right mind would set there own dog on a wolf. it would go on for ages, and how the fook would you step in and dispatch it with out getting bit by the wolf or your dog. have a look on you tube at wolf vs wolverine and then tell me your dog would tackle it.
-
hi inan, your old dog could certainly scare a few hares. how was he bred. cheers pete.
-
i personally think they would be too big and heavy for serious lurcher work. dont know too much about fox hounds but i see some at a country show last year and they was big old dogs. how much do they weight?? they seem to have big chunky feet, legs and head, much larger than your adverage base blood used in most lurcher x's. would like to see some pics though. cheers.

most of the best hare dogs ive seen have been saluki blooded, buts it not down to %. its offen saluki x's to saluki x's. there is also an element of luck and chance when breeding 2 dogs together for the first time. some great dogs dont produce great pups when mated to the wrong bitch. I had a good hare bitch once with no saluki blood but if you breed the same cross again it probally wouldn't fair too well.

Moonlighting, that is so incorrect! you get more with a gun that lurchers....... nah like i said, depends on terrain. where i live you do well get 10/20 rabbits on the lamp. my mate shoots on the lamp and offen gets 30 plus. rabbits are offen close to cover in little groups of 3's n 4's. my dog might get 1 where as a gun might get 2 or 3. mind you i think he as rim fire and not an air gun. any way im a lurcher man but just been honnest.
-
for me the seasons over so carnt really see the need for hunting threds. but the mutts still need walking and summer time is great for taking them out, training them and swimming and such like. i.ll try and take my cammera out put some pics up too, just for the crack.
-
depending on the terrain and rabbits been the quarry, you def get more with an air gun. so if pest controll is your aim thats the way, but im in it for the sport so lurchers all the way. also if you was mouching round a wood and bumped into a large fallow stag it would take some stopping with a 22 pre charge,...unless you threw it at it and took a few close range shots......but then ive never been stalking so i dont know how easy that would be....cheers.
-
ha ha. nice one mate. like the captions to the pictures, espicially the one about the dogs jacking! its great to see a nice light hearted thred. cheers.

also coney catcher 3 is good. not really a training dvd but a good insite into how someone else brings up a working lurcher pup.
