  1. I can assure you that I read your ad properly and I am still confused I quoted you directly when you said that they "ARENT OF NO SPECIAL NAMED BREED" A breed is a breed. You say they are KC reg Borders - so they are a "special named breed", the breed's name is Border Terrier. I would have thought that Borders were pretty well known. Anyway, before you get too narky - I've given you a bump haven't I
  2. I'm confused - you are saying that they are KC registered but that they aren't any named breed?
  3. What cross is he? Is he a first cross gh/rr? His head looks like there's a bit of Staffie influence? I'd expect him to be a bit taller if he was a first cross gh/rr.
  4. at least now its not my fault tanx lads What has the vet advised?
  5. I reckon it's always a good idea to put up the parents' health tests results. Not too sure what the recommended ones are for DdB - hips at the very least I imagine, and probably elbows too?
  6. Have you tried her breeder to see if he/she will have the bitch back? I think that Mr Hunter made a really good point about hanging on to her til after her season.
  7. "Merle24 - Great Dane may well have gone into the development of the RR, back in the 1800s, but they won't have been used by decent breeders in living memory. I can't see many people deliberately trying to increase the height of the breed. The standard calls for a bitch of 24-26 inches tts and a dog 25-27 inches tts. The reason that the height is restricted is that you start to lose athleticism when they start to get too big, and the breed was developed to be a hunting dog that would also protect the homesteads. I've had RRs for nearly 25 years and mine have been at the top of the breed standa
  8. "I probly have it wrong so,duno mate its my mums dog anyway! Shes a big girl though, nah mate shes kc reg" Did your mum get her in Ireland, James? I know a couple of breeders over there - just being nosey
  9. Sorry, James - I was only joking about the Great Dane Merle24 - Great Dane may well have gone into the development of the RR, back in the 1800s, but they won't have been used by decent breeders in living memory. I can't see many people deliberately trying to increase the height of the breed. The standard calls for a bitch of 24-26 inches tts and a dog 25-27 inches tts. 10. Wow - that's a big bitch for a Ridgeback! My 50 kg dog is only about 29 to the shoulder and he's a big lad! Are you sure that there isn't Great Dane in there somewhere How much does she weigh?
  11. Are you just putting her out or going outside with her? It's most effective to go outside with the pup and say the words you want to use to encourage her to go, I use "be clever", then give her lots of praise when she does what she needs to do, then back inside.
  12. Short and simplistic answer - the panel of vets at the British Veterinary Association look at the xray plates of the dog's hips and award one point for every fault. A score is awarded for each hip, so a perfect set of hips would score 0:0 and a set of hips with every possible fault would score 53:53. So the lower the score the better.
  13. Well, we finally got organised and bought a mincer and a sausage maker - now we just need some recipes for beef sausages (from our Dexters). All suggestions welcome
  14. I've had RRs for about 25 years. They are a great house dog - just their presence is enough of a deterrant for a wrong doer! But they probably don't have the turn of speed that you are after if you want bunnies. They can and do catch them, but will be outrun by a lurcher. However, they do have great endurance and mighty powerful jaws. Personally, I wouldn't keep them as a kennel dog - they don't have much coat and will fret on their own outside. They will do a much better job of guarding your home and your family if they are inside. If you do decide to get one, be careful where you go. Too
  15. "why would you suggest breeding from a bitch who has a dodgy temperament towards people??? " some staffs are like that , does not mean the pups would be , had put a whippet to her all the litter are doing fine, a dog never bits the hand that feeds it, old saying but very true, Staffs should be great with people! I can't see any good reason to breed from a dog that isn't good with people.
  16. Could her breeders take her back? A reputable breeder would.
  17. Love the pics Now if you're after a house cow - I've got a couple of dexter cows with calves for sale ..... well thats funny it was dexters we were looking at we have a application for a dwelling to go with a free range chicken farm on our land going in at the end of this month so the cow thing will have to wait till we know if we`ve got permission or not as it will reduce the grazing alot. how far are you from oxford and how much am i looking at for a cow with calf at foot? Unfortunately, we're a bit of a trail from Oxford, we're down in Devon, near Exeter. I've got a coupl
  18. Now we have started slaughtering our Dexter steers, we've decided to have a go at making some sausages - that's if we can find a decent electric mincer and a sausage maker. Just wondering if anyone had any suggestions - either of what to buy or what to avoid. Many thanks

  20. But what on earth is the point of using a dog that has only one testicle - a fault that is known to have a hereditary element? You're risking producing more pups with the same fault. And this is a serious fault, it has health implications - there is a high risk of the retained testicle becoming cancerous, so it should be removed. Do you want to produce pups that could need to have an operation? There isn't exactly a shortage of decent Border dogs about.
  21. Merle is a coat pattern - not a colour - hence you can get red merles or blue merles. It can be very attractive but should never be doubled up on ie two merles should never be mated together.
  22. Here we go again .... The ridge is a naturally occuring mutation that was on the native African hunting dogs and was passed on to the offspring of matings with the European's dogs. They DO NOT HAVE SPINOBIFIDA! "That" ****** programme has a lot to answer for - making such an inaccurate statement. The producer of the programme has retracted that statement now - but rather less publicly than she made the erroneous one However, the RR can suffer from a condition called dermoid sinus - as can other dogs, people and some horses, but the RR is affected at a higher rate and it is thought to h

  24. The Rhodesian Ridgeback standard calls for a dog capable of great endurance with a fair turn of speed. It is a relatively new breed (breed standard only drawn up in 1926) and still has great diversity of type. I've had RRs since 1984 and currently have 6. I have known of RRs that have been very successful hunters and others that have very little hunting instinct. Some are very easy to train - others rather less so. I have just imported a young dog - he is a hunter and is pretty quick considering he already weighs about 45 kg and is not quite a year old. He is really willing to please and
  25. Just being nosey - what would you be planning to use this cross for?
