  1. Hello Good luck with the dogs! keep us posted
  2. Cracking value that like!! When I need new kennels Ill definately consider them.
  3. Are the ferrets fat?? If there in shape you should get a coller onto them. Try it tighter!
  4. Hello and welcome! Sounds like a good plan!
  5. Good pics! Has one of the yellow pups got a white tip to its tail? Or is it just the light? Anyway, they look like good pups!
  6. Disregard the areas where theres open holes, these are just rodents and you can be sure that the moles are not using those runs, as for one they dont like draughts, and as far as im aware they also dont like guests!
  7. You can order good fox snares from Game and Country enterprises, Selkirk. Hope this helps
  8. You can buy gamebird eggs from gamefarms that keep their own laying stock. Usually pheasant(many strains/types) or partridge(red-legged or grey) They are the principle birds reared for game shooting. Grouse can be reared for ornamental purposes but are not reared for shooting, all of the grouse shot in this country are wild birds. You can find listings of several game farms in the shooting times. Hope this helps
  9. They're further north than that, saw one at first light last spring ! Hi BIG PETE did u see one in Tynedale???? If so its the first muntjack ive heard of in the area. Cant wait until there are more of them!!
  10. I would guess so. As the bunnies up the fells here havent bred yet, just those on the low ground.
  11. That will be interesting for me as all I have seen have been black lab crosses. But they do all seem to look like a floppy eared lab with a white chest blaze. Do the yellow pups also have that chest blaze??
  12. Flippin ek Ian that is early, I can't recall ever seeing young in January before around my patch! Might be wet, but in principle its mild and food is about...so recipe for early breeding AND Mixxy...Hey Ho, another year dawns! Interesing though, as I picked up my first new bit of land for 2008 yesterday, and walking it with the owner it was full of "tame" bunnies and they were very frisky, no sign of mixxy. She wants them dealt with but has also lost 18 of her 20 chickens in the last 10 days so looks like fun at this place (got to leave the deer alone though)! Cheers Deker Also
  13. Although many areas I look after are quite low on numbers due to myxy. I do still have areas where myxy has had little or no effect on the population. Even though the rabbits are living together in huge numbers, the desease just dosent do what it used to. And Ill only find odd ones effected and then, usually not that badly. Notably though, all of the areas in which the rabbits seem relatively immune, they exist in huge numbers.
  14. As a keeper I see a lot of both breeds working throughout the year. You say your a rough shooter, therefor one of the spaniel breeds would seem the better choise. As they are generally better hunters than pure labs. But the springerdors I have seen working (which is about a dozen) are very good dogs and can certainly hunt very well. And they often seem a bit steadier.
  15. fenn traps don,t kill mink in a hurry ,and thats fact, as ive trapped to many mink with them over the years , although i liked them for bank holes , but had to attach drowning wires to put them down and dead very quickly , the 116 and 120 are stronger and far better forbank trail s and holes through flotsam and on log crossings etc. solway have a new spring trap out now that they say have stronger springs , ive said this for many years that these spring traps were not strong enough to kill mink ,especially when you get them up to six pounds plus inweight , but each trap has its uses for diff
  16. Ive found its a waste of time trying to trap foxes in the countryside. Much better off using properly set snares! But if the fox is comming in around farm sheds or other buildings or structures, especially in urban environments, then a cage trap, set somewhere where it dosent look to obvious can work well. Use a bait which matches what would be found by the fox in the area. Hpoe this helps.
  17. I am a full time pest controller, and most of my work is mole catching. I use some scissor traps, a few talpex traps(mainly in very dry soils), but mainly I use the duffus type barrel trap. I find them by far the best traps, and ofcourse you also get plenty of double catches!! Other than this I totally agree with trappa.
  18. Ive had my call birds killed by a stoat before. It killed 3 before I actually caught the bugger! That was in a large crow trap(ladder type), with rabbit mesh. A coupple of years later in one of my larsens I had a magpie killed by a weasel during the night, a mark 4 fenn trap in a tunnell (with restricted entry, to avoid cats or dogs etc getting in) set by or in the larsen using the killed call bird (or part of it) as bait should get it sorted. Otherwise move the trap somewhere else. Hope this helps
  19. Thanks to all who helped me get set up!! Drinks on me!!!!
