  1. Was it the dogs first catch? These things have to be worked on, its instinctive for a dog to be posessive over its catch especially with another dog around. Also who is the boss? is it you or lola or the dog? If you are, then you need to work it out with the dog one to one before involving anyone else. What is the dogs breeding? Has it got terrier in it or something that is normally more docile? My colliex gives up its catch quite naturally but with my terrierx it was a longer process of winning its respect-hope thats some use
  2. Dont panic, she's young and enjoying life. I,ve got one thats the same age and doing exactly the same thing. A young ferret that plays with you is a ferret that trusts you, she'll mature soon enough.
  3. I guess you're right. Just for one minute i thought i may have single handedly overturned the hunting ban and be hailed a hero and be carried through the streets and have tomatoes thrown at me, but now its not to be
  4. I have just been reading Defra's Animal welfare act 2006, one of the subtitles goes like this, What does the duty to care mean?. One of the statements under this title says "The ability to exhibit normal behavioral patterns". Would i be right in thinking that a normal behavioral pattern for a carnivore is to hunt? So according to Defra i am duty bound to allow my dog to hunt so it can "exhibit normal behavioral patterns" arn't i? Have i got myself confused?
  5. That was a good read, pleased for you that you lived to tell the tale. Over the years i've had dogs that have distracted angry bulls allowing me to make my escape. Not sure how many times i've owed my life or health to the loyalty of my dogs.

  7. Im not sure how tight i can go before i choke them!
  8. Went out for a few hours saterday pm. Started well netted up the first warren and popped three jills in, the first rabbit came up through a hole covered in leaves that i hadn't noticed but very pleased to see my little bitch was already there waiting for it. The little bitch then ran from the top of the warren to the bottom just ahead of the next rabbit this time she got the next door hole so good job it had a net over it. After the third rabbit the ferrets started to reappear, only one came up minus collar. A four feet dig later the collar was recovered. If it hadn't cost £46 it would have s
  9. Pity this topic got soured so quickly, very interesting to hear of big cat sightings from sources not in the main stream media. I think if had been standing so close to a big cat I would have been awed, even honoured last thing on my mind would be set the dog on it, hardly a pest species.
  10. Somewhere between 10 and 40 in an ideal world. 2 in my world, anymore wouldn't enough attention due to the economic climate
  11. Thanks everybody, great thread. I have no experience with salukis and neither do i believe those who say that there dog is perfect and does nothing wrong. So its been good to read honest accounts of the breed with experienced dogmen telling you how it is warts an all.
  12. I dont think indoors or outdoors makes a better dog, the important thing is that you give it a good life. A dog is not going to give up the thrill of the chase just because it is kept indoors. Keeping it indoors doesnt mean it has to sleep in your bed or eat off your dinner plate and if it is your only dog and you kept it outside whats it going to learn on its own? Personally i mix it a bit, i keep two dogs so they have always got company. They are kennelled together at night, when no one is at home they have the kennels and the run of the garden, and when we are at home the dogs come inside wi
  13. I have a half cross beardie sired by Hector, he is only nine months so experience is limited but i will tell you the story so far. Dont have pics but he stands at just over 23 inchs. He is a very affectionate and calm dog, walking to heel and recall came naturally, took about five minutes to train him to sit. Have recently started introducing him to lamping and he's picking the idea up quite quickly he caught his first rabbit on the lamp a few days ago. I have always kept him with another dog and i think he would have struggled if left in his own company too long. Definately no good if you wan
  14. assuming you,ve got a battery in the locature and you've turned it on, if you are not getting a signal try turning the batteries around the other way in the ferret collar. If that is no help give more details of the problem
  15. Anybody else in the neighbourhood keep ferrets? I had a hob lost for a month that got picked up by another ferreter a few streets away
