Broken/Dislocated Jaw....just back from the vets
gollum replied to gollum's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
She's looking good mate Tough wee thing she is. Still giving softened dry food in isolation and then putting her back in with the others for the main feed. She seems to be fine, and is not taking any crap off the others, so looking V.good here. Cheers P1. G -
Broken/Dislocated Jaw....just back from the vets
gollum replied to gollum's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
Hi folks, Thanks to everyone for suggestions, really really appreciated. Quick update: I gave her mashed up james wellbeloved this morning and fed her in an isolation cage before feeding the rest. Then put her back in with the other girls and a fresh rabbit breakfast. She ate most of the mashed. and when I put the rabbit in she joined in with the others in the general melee. V. pleased to say that she got stuck in like a good un, is holding her ground when the others try to force there way in to the carcass and doesnt seem to be suffering at all. Early days, but I breathed -
Broken/Dislocated Jaw....just back from the vets
gollum replied to gollum's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
Cheers mate, I'm not eligible but thanks v. much for suggestion. I'm just hoping she recovers, if it is a dislocation apparently it's possible it could click back in to position. The vet was really helpful and even offered to fix her up under the anaesthetic they use before x raying for no extra charge! But that was if it was a case of relocating it. If it turned out to be broken then its either £1k + in orthopedic surgery fees or pray it heals without leaving her too deformed to have an active happy life. I wouldnt want her to live a crappy life, but if theres any hope of a recovery I'm goin -
Sad day folks, Just got back from the vet with Sunshine. She's from last years, 9 months old. Last night I noticed her jaw didn't look right so got off to the vets today. He had a look and thinks her jaw is broken or possibly dislocated from the socket on one side and suggested an x ray to confirm. After more chat he had a closer look when I assured him she's not a biter and never has been. He decided in the end that best option would be to bring her home with some painkillers and keep a very close eye on her. Isolate her at feeding times and also sold me a huge syr

Several of the estates I work my ferrets on have serious mole infestations. I'm just waiting for them to ask me if I can get rid of them..... As a complete novice in the art of mole trapping, any suggestions on most reliable and time efficient methods would be a great help. Any suggestions appreciated. G.

Hi folks Just to wish you all a great christmas, Cheers HH. G.

Thanks folks. Best sharpen the spade then eh I don't mind a dig...its just when you are fighting your way through rocks it can get tedious. HH all G

The last few trips I keep coming up against stubborn rabbits. The Jills or even my HUGE poley cannot get them to move and it seems they would rather fight it out with no chance at all than run!! On one occasion I got a whiff of fox so maybe that helped to keep em down, but I'm stumped on the rest. Digging is an everyday thing now, whereas in the summer, allegedly the bad time for digging, I hardly had any digs at all! I am as quiet as possible always, and usually use stop and long nets to help keeping noise disturbance to a minimum. The ferrets are getting more experie

Is it possible to long net at night? You could get a decent bag by the sound of things and no risk of losing the ferrets.... Just a thought. Good luck. G.

Cracking day lads. Hat's off to ya HH. G.

Terrible mate, I hadn't accounted for light spill from a nearby road, lighting me up like an airport approach I kept seeing this wave of light when cars came around the corner on full beam, it looked mad sweeping along the field lighting me up and casting a shadow that moved as the car passed :11: Got 1.... ferrets enjoyed breakfast this morning HH. I was out with the long nets last night and didnt find out till this morning....been thinking about it all day. Concluded it would be a real shame that a few could spoil this for the many that DO appreciate the service. I mean, just think about how much we all have learned on here, whether it's the posts on ferret ailments and husbandry, how to make nets, longnetting, fieldcraft......whatever, theres many peoples lifetimes experience being shared here and we are lucky and all the better for it. IanB, Keep up the good work mate, many people myself included make these forums part of t

Many thanks folks, Got some off Deben in the end, it seems ok but I'll definitely buy off one of the sites mentioned here next time. Happy Hunting all. G.

Thanks snareman, Can you recommend a supplier I can purchase the 0.457 from? HH. G.
-
Hi folks After much trawling through posts I find that the recommended gauge for rabbit snare wire is 6 strands of 0.457mm. Only trouble is I cant find anyone online that sells it..... I can get 0.375mm, or 0.4mm so I am wondering if its a reasonable compromise to get a narrower gauge ie 0.375mm and use 8 strands instead of 6. 6 strands of 0.457 comes to 2.742mm diameter in total, 8 strands of 0.375 comes to 3mm diameter in total or maybe slightly narrower using 0.4mm 6 strands of 0.4mm comes 2.4mm diameter in total. I'm hoping to make up some running poles for the grey squi

Hi Cragrat, The rabbit reaction is puzzling and as yet unsolved though I suspect the white net was the issue, not helped by the bamboo/guy assembly being a bit wobbly too. I will dye the net at some point and try again but right now ive got my hands quite full on the estates. You say that the set your thinking of working is lit up at night. If I were you I would loft the nets, find a comfy perch and watch for as long as it takes to figure out how the rabbits react. Being able to see em should be a great advantage, but then again I suspect that it will work against you in that they may shy a

If its braided nylon, try threading one end inside the other, then stitch to hold in place. Works great and the outer sleeving braid pulls tight on the inner bit when tension applied. Hope that helps. HH. G.

Hi I have a couple of awkward buries that I want to shift the rabbits from in to a nearby warren that will be much easier to work. Has anyone on here ever tried stinking out? If so, whats the best method folks? HH. G.
-
It looked promising to start with... A strip of woodland at the end of one of my permissions gardens. Meadows on one side and buries running along 40 or so yards of bank top hedge next to a road. I spent a couple of hours clearing nettles from the bank and brash from the woodland floor before running out three 50 yard long nets. Tailed through the hedge they made a zone from which no bunnies should pass......in theory. My little ferts were on to the job at hand and the first bolted within minutes. Unfortunately I was on the wrong side of the hedge. I had 2 choices..50 yard sprint then u

I have pipes leading down from the sleeping quarters to the runs below...they never crap under the exit of the tubes....I've moved the positions and its always the same, even if they used to soil that corner before. My suggestion would be to put some kind of pipe, 125mm corrugated is good, suspended 12" over the corner you want to keep clean, and then take the other end to another corner and suspend in the same way. In theory that should stop it. It might be that mine dont because they have to go down the tube if they want access to the runs but it works for me. Good luck. G.

Round here too...if it was worth nicking Thats why its made from bamboo and old silage bale netting. It cost me under a tenner including poles and lines. Anyone nicking it would be mighty disappointed when they discovered it was covered in sheep s**t and no use for netting anything apart from raspberries But...the damn thing scares the rabbits so much its no good even as a dummy for drop netting Im going to dry and dye it dark green, if the dye takes then I'll try it again.... HH. G
-
Hi Rich, Nope, lots of head scratching I'll try dyeing the dummy net at some point but Im a bit focused on long netting when the harvesting starts at the mo. It should be any day now, so Ive just made another 3 50 yard 4z sheet long nets ready for it Hopefully 300 yards in total will be enough..should be fun anyway. How did you get on with the cam? G.
-
I have been observing this warren for 6 months. I walk by most days, before i put the net up and after and I had a reasonable idea of the times to expect to see them and in what weather. So when for example on a sunny day with breeze you always find 5 or more out at 4pm and then nothing at anytime in any weather after the net goes up....it seems fairly clear that they aren't behaving as they usually do. Also, the wheat which was being kept short in a 50 yard long stretch was not being grazed anymore. The recovery became pronounced after 3 days or so. Also, the runs that used to head from
