I'll try it, but ive only got a digi camera with a video option....its not great quality but I'll see what I can do. Of course I'll have to be selective and only post when I have a net full Seriously though, I'm planning a 100yard drop next week, Ive just made up another 20 pull pins and Im in the process of drilling the remaining 10 poles. Assuming it still drops ok, I'll setup Monday and drop Wednesday night. Watch this space on Thursday... HH G.

Hi Richie, The pins are quite long but there is method in my madness As the wind can sway the poles a bit when the net is lofted I allowed a bit extra on the pin length to account for the pulling effect on the pull cord. This was before I had put the full length guy on so now I guess they could be cut down as the sway wont be able to affect the length between pole tops. That said, I havent had any problems with pulling the pins out, only that they were catching on the bag as mentioned above. The new guy line seems to lock all the poles together really well but my guess is that without later

Cheers Mackem I havent seen Mick Mansbridge's version though I googled him after you posted. From what I read I would expect he does have some form of drop net system as he sounds accomplished in other long netting methods. It's not a new idea, H Wymans "Art of Longnetting" mentions it and there are some posts on here too. My angle was trying to do it on the cheap. The whole system has cost me 45 quid for a 50 yard drop which is roughly the same as a shop bought long net without any of the drop system. So that parts worked out well, but the use in the field is as yet unproven. I have recently

Hi folks, I found that having the drop pin on the underside of the sliders a bit unreliable.... the pins have a habit of snagging the net when the cord is pulled and because I am using a counterweight system to do the pulling ( I'll explain this further on) the net could remain half lofted at the point where the pin snagged. I thought maybe putting the pull pin at the top would be an improvement and so far it seems to be. Also it has the added bonus of not giving the bag in the net anything to catch on to if it gets blown up to the poles in cross wind. The 2nd issue was that the ten

My Albino chilling in the hammock I keep a horticultural max/min thermometer in the hutch, its reassuring to be able to check.

Hi Ferreting folk, I posted this: http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/index...showtopic=49225 in the long netting forum but it may be some use to fellow ferreters. It's my cheap method for making a drop net system that utilises your existing long nets. Works a treat with a traditional net, not sure about quickset/speedset though with a bit of thought I think it would. Hope its some use, its definitely opened up some new options for me (airfield perimeter fence for example) :) Happy hunting all. G.

I managed to get a couple of pics whilst the Jill was eating breakfast this morning. I think she's had ten! Squeaking away, blind as bats and gorgeous. I best get out hunting, feeding this lot will be a full time job G.

My Jill had her first litter of kits this morning I'll post pics in a few days or so when its ok to look. The squeaking is like music to my ears :) Cheers all. G

Cheers folks, I'll put pics up in a day or 2. Regards G

I should have said that both top and bottom lines should be clove hitched to your pegs. This may not be how everybody does it normally. Cheers. G

Hi Folks Ive been trying to knock up a drop net system that will utilize my existing long nets, and finally after hours looking for suitable (cheap enough) materials there is an answer. My local scrap dealer was the source for the Poles, and for £30 I got 20 9 foot lengths of aluminium window surround. Because it is essentially box section with bracing on its long edge I find this to be extremely rigid but still super light and robust enough to take being hammered in to the ground. Around the poles I used 40mm solvent weld plastic overflow pipe as drop arms/sliders, £12 for two 3m

When should I stop working my pregnant Jill?
gollum replied to gollum's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
Thanks everyone, she is now rehoused in her own unit and I'll be keeping her home now. I had the feeling that it was time to keep her home as soon as I saw the belly start to expand but she still seemed so enthusiastic about going out and having fun and I didn't want her to feel left out . But as jimandpup said, lose her and I have nothing! Too true mate. Thanks everyone. Cheers. G -
Hi Folks, My Jill is looking quite pregnant now, she came in to season on the 9th March and was mated immediately by my extremely enthusiastic hob....many times! I am sure she is pregnant, and she's starting to look a bit fatter around her lower abdomen. My question is this: When should I stop taking her out hunting? She seems full off energy and was still enjoying her trips out last week but I want to be sure she has a safe pregnancy and that I don't do any harm by working her when maybe she should be resting up. Also I have her isolation cage setup ready for her to nest and deli

Thanks for all the replies folks, the ferts are fine, had them out today and they happily entered buries without hesitation. So glad to say the trauma hasnt scarred them psychologically I think the Mink suggestion could be possible as there is a stream relatively close by and we have had high water recently which I am told brings them on to this land. Whatever it was I am glad my ferts are ok and will hopefully steer clear if they ever meet the mystery biter again. Cheers G.

Greetings fellow ferreters Had a bit of a shocker today... Was working a hedgerow this morning and My Jill came out in a very timid and alarmed state. She had a very musty smell and had been clearly bitten on the head. The Hob followed, he was his normal self but he too had been bitten. I asked the landowner if he recognised the smell on the Jill and his guess was FOX! Now the worrying and strange thing is that the holes did not look big enough to allow a fox to get in though I do tend to trust the farmers opinion on the smell as he has had many an experience with foxes over th

Hi All, I was out on my one of my permissions yesterday and got chatting with a guy who had done some ferreting on the same land. He kindly warned me about the depth of a set of buries that follow a hedgeline we could see from where we were talking. Apparently they are so deep that at some point a terrier was dug out and they only managed to reach it with a JCB at the full extent of its range. Does anyone here ferret deep buries? To me it sounds like a non starter. I dont want to risk losing my ferts, but I'm interested if anyone has any opinions on the subject. Cheers. G

Hi Folks, Well we still haven't found "the otter", no sign at all and only 1 sighting that was far from certain. It's been over a week and my hopes for his safe return are dwindling by the day. But, the Jill has now been re-homed with me and seems contented and setting nicely. My Hob is VERY keen to get to know her....but as she is in season that'll have to wait until I can get her jabbed. She seems very friendly with my Jill and they play together happily for short periods as I get them used to each other. Gonna build a court to house the increasing family as my original Jill is, i thin

Thanks all, nice to get such positive feedback. I know that this is the ferts forum...but, heres another pic of Sorrel doing the hundred metre tennis ball sprint Had me in stitches, hope it brings about a smile. The Golf Course manager offered to give me his ferts today. The hob which I call "the otter" as he is so big, and his albino Jill.It turned out that the Hob has been missing for 24 hours and we still havent found him We left guts from a rabbit, his carry box, and a cage trap with his favourite food in next to the hole he was last entered to, but I am worried he wont have ha

Hi Folks I got my Beddy/whippet pup today And by coincidence it happens to be my birthday...gotta be a good omen:) She's 8 weeks tomorrow, gorgeous and got a personality to match. Really sweet natured and full of fun. Dad's the bedlington, Mums the whippet. My Jill came in to season today too So , what with all the umhh, "attention" she's been getting recently (my hob is knackered ) I reckon there should be some more new recruits in the barracks in a wee while. Talk about timing... best birthday Ive had in years. Happy hunting all. G

It seems that every time I open the hutch door to my ferts sleeping area the Hob has the Jill by the scruff of the neck and is trying to mate her...sometimes this is accompanied by squealing from her... and her neck and shoulders seem to be getting quite mauled. I know they can be rough when mating but as she is not in season yet it seems he is knocking her around with no hope of success and she is having quite a rough time of it. That said, they still curl up together to sleep and seem generally affectionate to one another at all times. The only other odd thing is she has started to develop

Hi all, thanks for the advice and suggestions. Golf course update 14/02 Upon arrival at the course the course manager told me that the previous day he had been walking his ferret, honestly it follows him around like a dog I kid you not along the boundary of one side of the course and apparently as the fert dashed in the holes rabbits literally flew out in all directions So...off I went to the very same area and sure enough lots of holes and sign everywhere. Netted up, entered ferts......NOTHING! Not even a bolter. Not 1. We had a good old chat and he tried his fert which I nicknamed
