  1. We're you live in Bedfordshire the fields are big eneough for a saluki Lurcher! I've run there plenty and my old dogs didn't lose mean in the wood or hedges. Get yourself 1, mind you the police wouldn't be able to prosecute you with an Alsatian x they'd laugh that out of court saying you use that for hares, second thaults stick with what you have.
  2. Because you own a saluki x why you a fanatic on them? I've got 1 saluki Lurcher and 1 bull wheaton greyhound for lamping salukis have there short falls but for a good 1 killing strong hares won't be one of them! If I was just in 2 coursing like 10 years ago I'd own 2 saluki xs. The whell don't need reinventing there the best tried and tested dog to consistently kill hares going out with the cross your on about will be like taking a knife to a gun fight! Your not far from me don't kill all the hares next season please.
  3. So it was down to bad entering then? My fault sorry, the xs is just fine for all quarry, carry on.
  4. Sorry didn't answer the question Iv only ever had 3 which is nothing. I was ment to say im not qualified to comment on deerhound xs, I think due to the large volumes of work bill Doherty did with his dogs he is, but then bill and or his dad aren't guiding the ship no more.
  5. As I tried to make clear lapin it's only the experience of the dogs I had and by no means can you judge all deerhounds by it. I'll tel you the exact circumstances. I got a pup, my brother liked look of it so I rung Trevor to see if he had 1 he could buy, my brother bought a pup Trevor kept from a litter for himself, she was obedient no trouble a nice steady un entered bitch and if I Rember about 6- 10 month. Through this great site I meet a fellow ( hairy long ears) deerhound owner, invited hI'm on my permission to run his 3 year old Platts bitch, I was very impressed with her to
  6. Be fair to the litter and Trevor have they all been taken by men who's main objective is owning an all around dog that MUST take ALL QUARIE. Even if your not an out and out fox man which I'm not really you really should test a big dog like a first x on all challenging quarrie. I can't say that I can vouch for all the people who had the pups but I can say the 2 we had got every chance to take all quarrie. Don't want to be biased so to highlight the Platts bitch I had aswell ended up showing she had a heart the size of a pea and I put a nice bit in front of her some of witch she took but
  7. Good honest post davey, we differ in whether we keep our dogs that don't meet our expectations and were we go next iv gone a racey worker to worker wheaton bull greyhound as appoused to a diffrent line of deerhound x but your description of you experience seem familiar to my own memory's.
  8. I don't think you can say for sure but.. My brothers bitch was off Trevor's open class greyhound x doxhope boots. my bitch was to an open class short distance bitchgreyhound a greyhound man had that he took to busard which is boots brother both owned by Trevor cooks. I will say both we're the last left and smallest bitchs from their litters but then again we give them the best of food mine Finnished 25 my brothers 26 both fast well put together bitchs bill doherty said as much when he see a pic of them. if they failed and the others were stronger and done the job I'd say it was do
  9. I'm in exactly the same situation and it can be a chore at times lamping and getting up for work but I owe to the dog to test it to its maximum, and 2 good nights a week can still produce good numbers. If people have seen your dogs run and they can and do take the gear fair play to you.
  10. Take your tongue out of darcys arse. that one wee line aimed at me fills me with joy. Your only input and its for me, awwwww bless do you read all my posts baldrick? Go looking for them? Bet you do....... If you want to be my friend its ok, I've ripped the pish out of people before and became friend...... I'm a forgiving guy just say the word and I'll let you in the circle of trust....... Not all but iv noticed a lot of the ones you keep sucking up to darcy. It's cringe worthy. You got a dog yet or what? To busy on the key board for all that.
  11. A greyhound runs round a track, and yes I think most big deerhounds can kill fox. All this bull about greyhounds needing to be worked like a Lurcher I don't buy it, most greyhounds used for Lurcher breeding are track dogs or at best they used to be double handed coursing dogs not breed to kill, they put the speed, the bull and Wheaton xs such dogs still do the job. The ones I had took rabbit in there first season, I didn't do that much of it in case I damaged them but rabbit is no big deal. Can your current dog take multiple quarrie in a day/ night week in week out, has it got large nu
  12. Kranky. It's no good blaming people not using well breed deerhound stock, I done my research and went for doxhope. The litter my brothers doxhope came from was the same litter gibbos bitch holly cane from. If it was down to the entering, how comes there is not 1from that litter that can be take out tonight if asked and take a fox single handed? There well over 2? It was a large litter too, I know 1 of the dogs was ment to have done a bit round Sunderland way having spoke to his owner last year but I don't think he's running anymore due to burning out. Even gibo in an ear
  13. You chose a Lurcher on what it looks like? Well there is a good basis to end up with the dog to meet your needs in the field!
  14. So your not started that bitch yet? Personally speaking just because a dogs nasty with other dogs don't mean thell be like it with game, iv had terriers set about another dog in a second but turned out cowards, and lurchers that run mean with other dogs but couldn't Do it in a field, like the learry ones in the pub! not saying yours be like that but id pay no notice of that till it's a proven hunter.
  15. Iv herd all this before and it's a poor excuse for me.I know how to enter a dog, my bitch see nothing That would test her till 2 year old and then it was only retrieving stubble cubs which she didn't. It's not good eneough from a 2 year old Lurcher that, they only have a limited running life, why woul you need to hold a dog up till its 3!!! Sometimes it's easy to blame the owners to take the attention of the xs! what x do u run? You have just said you didn't "test" her till two, on cubs and she didn...most deerhound x bred lurchers are doing stuff regular by then..like has been said, depends

Sometimes it's easy to blame the owners to take the attention of the xs! I keep typing stuff then rethinking and deleting it again lol.. What you describe was not my experience with mine in terms of his progression, by a year he was contributing regular

  18. Could well have been. Only my experience, I hope/sure there are good ones out there, I like them that's why I tried them, wouldn't again for some time.
  19. That's what I'm saying they wouldn't leave it on a road on private land I don't know, and this vet was a man not a tranny! Lol
  20. They'd have to remove it after, you can't pick a bag of cement up these days for health and safety!
  21. Has any one got a deerhound x greyhound (not talking dogs of old, what's about now) that they take out and it retrieves fox week in week out? A 20+ dog a season, as well as other testing game week in week out? I know no one can or probably will comment in the current climate, but from my experience they a crafty x that for the size are frankly a bit yellow when it comes to commitment and hard nights work compared to other lurchers breed for the same tasks. If there are any you should breed from them other wise it will be Finnished as purely a working mans dog. As I've said nothing
  22. I spoke to a vet about this once, he told me there's no way a vet would jab a injuried deer, and just leave it for any and every animal to scavenge on, and there fine to feed a dog if there fresh. Why would you comment on something your not sure about?
  23. Correct, you can teach a dog sit stay, recall, how to follow a beam of light and be fair there natural retrievers. But Surely no one should be happy with a 25 + inch 1st cross just to catch rabbit and hare? Problem is You can't teach heart.
