  1. Hello clay man. I find 3 days is plenty long enough whatever the weather. Greengrass3
  2. Hello Nemo. I have used the Butollo to bring in many a muntjac at all times of the year. I usually use it from within my jacket pocket in order to mute the sound a little. I don't play any particular tune. Just a few squeaks now and again. Its also useful to stop a passing muntie in its tracks as it does not spook them as much as the low cough I often use to stop a moving fallow. Good hunting. Greengrass3
  3. Super head. What part of the country do they grow them like that?
  4. I went out late afternoon one day last week to try for a fallow. After about half an hour in a high seat in the crown of an old oak I heard the tell tale approach of a grey squirrel along the hawthorn hedge to my left. He passed behind me and paused on a limb within touching distance of my right hand. I froze as he carefully inspected me. After a few seconds he seemed to accept my presence. I was well cammoed with a face mask, gloves etc and there was no wind for him to scent me. He began to groom himself. I refer to him as a male as part of the grooming process involved him licking and cleani
  5. A local farmer recently telephoned me to say that whilst out checking his stock he had seen two fallow bucks joined at the head by some red material. When he approached on the quad they ran back into the wood, clearing a four foot fence as though they were one animal. He also saw them later in the day feeding in a game crop. Once again they lowered and raised their heads together. Although they made a hasty exit he noticed that one of them seemed less sure on his feet than the other. Could I assist? I went out with the rifle morning and night for two days without sighting the pair. On the foll
  6. Does anyone out there have a copy of "Lurcher Days and Lurcher Ways" by Tony Diprose for sale? Please PM me with price and condition. Thanks. Greengrass3
  7. My Danish friend with his first fallow buck. On the same evening stalk I took the pricket as it left the shelter of thick conifers. As I chambered another round the fox ambled out to see what all the noise was about. Bad move Charlie.
  8. Hello Scallywag. There are quite an assortment of ferreting titles available today, some much better than others. Anything by James McKay is always a good read. Some of the older books can also offer good advice but of course methods and equipment have changed dramatically in recent years. Try my website for ocassional ferreting, ratting and other fieldsports titles. Good hunting. Greengrass3
  9. I have just come in from hanging a gralloched pricket in the barn. I took the rifle out mid afternoon and reached my high seat a couple of hours before dusk. Whilst walking around the edge of two rape fields I disturbed many hundreds of woodies who flocked around in the light mist before before settling in clouds in adjacent woodland. Can they tell the difference between a man carrying a rifle and one with a 12 bore? I ask this because as climbing into my seat I was surrounded by roosting pigeons, some not 50 metres distant and not unduly concerned. After about 30 minutes a dozen pheasants fee
  10. A friend of mine cubed up a haunch of Charlie and put it into the freezer to use later as ferret food. His mother casseroled it a few days later thinking it was stewing beef. The family ate it without complaint. It was only when my mate came to defrost his ferret food that the error was discovered.
  11. Try using Patak's curry paste - preferably balti flavour for a really good curry dish. Also when pan frying venison steaks add a glug of sherry to the pan juices. Scrape the bottom of the pan, reduce a little, then pour over steaks.
  12. For years i have used 200g sugar to 1 litre gin when using bullaces. I also add a few drops of almond essence. try using vodka instead of gin for a nice change.
  13. Nice reading Foxy. Great photos. Have you tried selling a longer article to the sporting press? It pays quite well. Keeps me in ammo and equipment.
  14. Hello Magpie. I don't know of a specific call for Munties but the Buttelo call I use for roe has unintentionally brought many a muntjac to my rifle. I have also turned a passing muntie with a couple of squeaks from a Buttelo and brought him back. Hope this helps. Greengrass3
  15. Hello to you all. Really glad to have found this fascinating site. I am new to this posting business so hope I don't make too many cockups. I have lived in the countryside all my life and have spent many happy hours with rifle, shotgun. ferret, terriers, rod etc. I am a keen cook and gardener and very little of my game and produce goes to waste. Although I have slowed down a little in recent years I still manage the deer on a large estate and do a fair bit of pheasant, pigeon and rabbit shooting. I have been a sporting book dealer and publisher for many years selling both new and old books on
