  1. I don't know if this is right, but I've been told that starlings taste so bad/bitter?(Tyla mentioned the skin) that even a fox won't eat a dead one if it finds one on the ground. Might be an "old wifes tail", but it's what I've always believed.
  2. Harrycatcat,my choice from your existing guns would be the Baikal. For wildfowl you need some bigger shells,so if the Baikal has 2 3/4" chambers,a mini-magnum with 36 grms of #3 shot (say) should do the job. You would not want to fire these through a side-by. Most new guns these days seem to be chambered 3",which is of no use to most folks who shoot only normal game (pheasant) or clays. It's good news for wildfowlers though, much more choice than before. The 3" chambers are listed as a selling point, but I think it just reduces the types of barrels in production. Wag,well done on suspending the
  3. You are right Deker, the new Webley's are turkish made,I had a magazine with an article about them. It told you who it was,but I can't find it right now. Pretty sure it is NOT Yildiz though. It is a good range of guns,up to about £2500 for the best. My choice would be a 910 sporter, about £700 and with a lifetime guarantee. Shouldn't think you could go far wrong with any of them really.
  4. You could try the old "Fairy liquid" bottle trick. Fill it with water, put it in your pocket, and when the aggressive terrier comes running in,give him a long squirt in the face. Hopefully this will make him stop (and think?),then shout "bugger off" or something loudly.I have had success with this. You need to stop it quickly, before your pup loses it's confidence.
  5. Bugger that!! The big male pigs have tusks, which could disembowel your dog with one swing of it's head. I think too much of my dogs to let them get involved with this, even if I had a suitable dog. Anyway, why not just shoot the pig? This is ammo for anti's IMHO.
  6. Glad to read that all you lads care for your dogs properly. The red lamps are our choice, just have to ensure that the dogs can't touch it at all.

    YOUR OTHER HALF

My wife used to help out as a youngster, with refreshments etc for the guns and beaters,on a shoot just outside Liverpool. So she has always been comfortable around shooters and hunters. She enjoys picking up on a local small shoot, where, apart from one man, all the picker-ups are ladies. I have no problems with my pastimes,as long as I don't clean guns on the kitchen table
  8. You are supposed to wipe them from the center outwards.Think of it like a dart board, wipe from the bull to double top, then bull to double five and so on until its complete. Use a soft cloth or a CD wet wipe if you have any. If that doesn't work,it probably is faulty.
  9. Nice write up on the IWS whiptail, I particularly like the bit about the patient and firm handling, the willful and stubborn bits too. You are more or less describing the FCR (flatcoated retriever) too!! We find the old fashioned methods don't get the best out of a FCR, and avoid any gundog clubs who can't move on. I think with a IWS, you need a good sense of humour, just like with a flatcoat. You have to not worry too much if the dog which wiped the floor,at last weeks gundog test, decides to act the prat this week.
  10. Coots can be aggressive little sods if living close to other types of fowl. No need to shoot 'em though,or moorhens. As they only chug about the water very slowly,it would be a poor sportsman who felt any sense of achievement hitting one!
  11. Heh Heh, perhaps I should have said fake viagra stubby. I've heard the main component may be ground chalk. The only thing it will stiffen is your bowels!!
  12. Hi shropshire lad, although a newbie,I do know this. If your FAC doesn't have permission to buy a moderator along with the rifle, then you'll need a variation,to do so. I have applied from the outset to buy a .22 rimfire with moderator.(Haven't got it yet of course, but have had the visit). Us newbies need to remember too, that when the experts talk about "modded" rifles, they usually mean moderated (silenced) rather than modified rifles, which I suppose customised like baldie produces could be called.
  13. Frank, I think you must have had a bad day or something,to get annoyed at my post. I too get fed up with some of the total bilge that gets posted on some sites. Sorry you think the site is going downhill,as a newbie,I thought it was pretty damn good! You obviously have a lot of experience to share, and this site needs folks like that. And your right,in the flesh I'm a nice chap,in fact,I'm one of the nicest people I know.
  14. Well frank, you seem a bit touchy. I don't see anything in my post at all critical of anybody? Regarding getting facts right, have I posted any? I aimed to produce a light hearted post, not critical or offensive of/to anyone. Perhaps you should add "don't touch me I bite" to your profile pal.
  15. If you buy 4x4 magazine,it has a list of all the current vehicles for sale. All the usual like bhp, mpg, petrol, diesel, seats etc and the insurance groups are listed. For older,or discontinued models you will have to do it the hard way,or list specific motors you are interested in.Then owners of similar models will come foreward hopefully.
  16. Thanks to brownbear and baldie, for the excellent info from them both. As someone who has only done a little bit with borrowed rimfires,it is all useful stuff! As most of my anticipated rabbiting will be at 25 ish to 100 yards, a .22 will do me nicely. I have in the past had to stalk to 25-30 yards using a 3" loaded .410. It did the job but one small bang and all potential targets were gone!! I would be using subsonics anyway,as there are some dwellings down one side of my ground. Just for interest brownbear, and while you have a ballistic calculator handy,if you put in a full power .22,what s
  17. Well as a newbie, I have enjoyed reading ditch's posts, he can sure tell a good story. I have no reason to doubt it's all true, even if it has been embellished a bit. With 3600+ posts in a bit over a year,he must spend nearly as much time on the keyboard as in the field. Mind you, Frank who is giving ditch some "stick",has posted 5900+ in a year and a bit!! Maybe you lads in Ireland hunt a lot but you give us some blarney don't you?
  18. Hello dunno, welcome to the site.Computer beginner or not,you have successfully joined. So long as you want to post about shooting/fishing/hunting and that sort of thing, you are in the right place!!I also post on a Suzuki vehicles forum, you would be surprised how many join and are never heard from again. Let everyone know what your interests are. Suzuki4you also gets a lot of finance scams and cheap viagra type ads, thankfully, this site seems spam -free.
  19. Hello flak88,welcome to the forum. I've only just joined myself, there seems to be a lot of decent people on here, and with a similar outlook. We have a friend with flatcoated retrievers who lives in Voorburg,so know some of the different ways in Holland regarding shooting/hunting etc.
  20. Baldie, many thanks for the tech info on your custom rifles. They sound very extensively reworked, and I think they are probably out of my price range just now. Do you really "bin" the removed parts or save them to use for repairs to similar uncustomised models?
  21. Hello k9wpg, The picture is not too clear I know, but the "Labs" are 3 rather damp flatcoats. Two of them work, picking up,working tests and a bit of obedience even! They show too, both been to crufts,so fairly versatile. One is still a big pup and just learning things steadily. The "springer" is my sheepdog,Holly the collie! We always like a collie about, our last one was 17 when we lost her.
  22. Yes, definately start out with a springer. In fact some people will not use anything else.(They never run out of air). The new Gamo Shadow 1000 came out well in a airgun world test. These are distributed by BSA. The Air Arms TX200 mentioned by spike is a super gun too. The weirauch range are,I think b****y heavy for a beginner.Superb trigger, but a bit unwieldy while learning to use iron sights. Get a copy of airgun world for used guns adverts, and a huge range of new stuff from various dealers.

    Lady

Hello spanyill-lover,it doesn't matter too much how you spell it,as long as you love her and treat her right.
  24. Hard luck youngbuck, better luck (or a bit more lead) next time eh? Remember, you want to hit him in the head, not the tailfeathers.
  25. OK,thanks for those opinions gents. Sounds like a G22 may be off the christmas list then! Never heard of a rimfiremagic brownbear, is it made near you? I see baldy built it,so it's mainly british made? Is the whole barrel carbon fibre? If so,is it going to last?Would like to hear more about it,website etc? Geoff.
