  1. Black strap mollasses, there's a blast from the past. My ex father in law used to take one or two supplements, vitamins etc. He always used to have a big dessert spoon full of the old "black strap"every day. Not to sweeten tea or anything,he just had it straight from the jar.
  2. Hi redfrog, I don't travel much for clayshooting these days,so can't help you with a clay club near Solihull. If however, you don't have much luck locally, try coming down the A38 towards Derby, but come off at the Tamworth/Alrewas turn. Find Garlands shooting ground,at Edingale and you will have a large selection of guns. You will also be able to try out any likely ones and get good advice right there.
  3. Stringer9, I join the others in urging you to report this teacher. Your friend hopefully, would be a witness. You may only get her forced to apologize, but that would be a start wouldn't it? Some anti country sports types have some strange ideas, I recall the Countryside Alliance having a stand at the Labour party conference once. They got called everything from a pig to a dog and even paedophiles (yes really) because they liked country sports. My wife is a teacher, and gets some disapproval from others for picking up with the flatcoats, and seeing off her friends when they ride with the local h

    BALDIE!!!!!

Baldie. Not having been on here long,I don't yet "know "everyone, but, as you remarked about "Chief" in another post, you are one of the "real deal" guys too. Your posts are always balanced and your knowledge of firearms excellent. Always a good read, so can I join the others and wish you a very happy birthday. All the best. Geoff.
  5. I think this is going to get more common. When organizing a beating line,or whatever, you must try to ensure that no one is "out on a limb"and not visible to someone else. All beaters to carry a whistle (and a club)? These cowardly people haters, know that little effort will be made to catch them, and if we as a "community"don't slow them up,who knows what they would do as their confidence grows?

    DEFRA

Yes it is and it will go only one way.I served me country like thousand of others I love my way of life but as I get older I get more cynical,.Every part of my life is being encroached upon, whether it be an ever increasing population,Speed cameras hunting ,shooting ,tail docking.,fuel duty global warming.A death by a thousand cuts.Stay and fight you reply Stallion what for and more important who?A government country who expects are soldiers to die in far away lands who dont even supply the correct kit.A government who expects farmers to pack it all in so they can build on the land.A government
  7. They were certainly keen to get stuck in,in those cold conditions. I would have loved to see a actual retrieve through the snow.
  8. Hey!! Digzy, don't you go tarring all us people who live in towns with the same shitty brush please. Blame a spineless government who caved in to the LAC etc. I was at work but my family are watching the Meynell off in these pics.
  9. Caspa, you don't seem to be feeding your dogs bad anyway. I favour 2 or 3 small meals a day, rather than one big overload. If you think your dog has worms at all, worm it properly. Just one more thing,ONIONS ARE TOXIC TO DOGS,LAY OFF THEM PLEASE.
  10. Don't know where you are ragumup, but "The Countryman" in Derby has a CZ Style for £175. Synthetic stock/shiny barrel etc.

    Lindisfarne

Found some Lindisfarne details in a countrymans weekly. The shooting is controlled by Natural England, and run on their behalf by local wildfowlers. Permits are £51 for a season, and this pays for a professional warden who offers advice to newcomers he meets on the shore. To apply, you need a form. To obtain a application form, send a sae to Lindisfarne Wildfowl Management Group, c/o 42,Barnston, North Seaton,
  12. Yup.it will go through chipboard for sure. I was zeroing at 50 yards, using targets pinned to wooden battens at least a inch and a half thick. They were leaning on a old paraffin tank which kept clanging as the bullets went through. Went through the tank too, where about 3 had hit the same spot. Solids or HP subs both penetrated about the same, but the HP's left a big exit hole. Double straw bales should slow them up though.
  13. An "Investarm" would fit your requirements, O/U and 3" chambers. There is a stop to remove which converts it from normal opening,to folding. You just undo the pivot screw, remove the barrels and push the stop out. I have just sold mine unfortunately, lovely little gun which doesn't look like little barrels on a big action. Usually one or two advertised in "Sporting gun", and should be around £100 now.
  14. I have not used a check chain for about 15 years. Not sure there's even one in the house. You can get a similar "check" effect with a one piece rope lead. If you do use the chain, please put it on your left arm first, and pull it. If it stays tight,it's on wrong for a dog on your left. The running ring, goes over the dogs neck and comes up to hang off the chain on it's right side. This way,a quick check doesn't become a strangle hold. If your dog has spaniels big ears, take care not to catch them. One quick check and praise when it's in the right position.
  15. Another option for a shooting hunter,is CPSA "Clubman" membership at £30 per year or £58 for two years. I do shoot clays, but never bother with registered shoots,so they wouldn't really know if I actually shoot clays or not. You are covered for all forms of shooting, but this would be no good for claims regarding dog problems etc.
  16. Now that sounds expensive. I recently bought 500 Express HV fibre wadded 71/2 shot 24grm load. These were £76. I use two gun shops, depending which way I'm going. I thought these were pricey at £76, so rang the other shop, for the price of the equivalent Eley's, they were £74, so not much in it. This time last year, they were about £58 I think.
  17. Thank goodness for greyhound rescue, they do their best for retired racers, some are not very old either. There are some grand people in racing,BUT,there are some heartless b*****ds who will get rid of a dog with as much compassion as throwing away holed socks. The ear tattoos, supposed to help identify them, just cause more suffering when the inhuman owners cut them off.
  18. Hello TM,welcome to the forum. Being a relative newby myself,I'm still finding my way about. There are some very knowledgeable people on here, who help and advise generously. There are also one or two very good storytellers, who can make a night out with a gun or a dog very interesting.Enjoy your stay.
  19. Just thought of "mad as a box of frogs". Also, an old friend from "oop north" used to describe silly people as "pots for rags", No I don't get it either, anyone explain?
  20. According to the Eley-Hawk marketing manager, lead which was $429 per ton in 2002,is now $3710 per ton, nearly a ten-fold increase. He says, cartridges will never be this cheap again, they are going to continue to rise gradually. The Chinese are using so much lead for car batteries and roofing, that they are just exporting a lot less than they used to. Federal cartridges, say the Chinese are building a city, the size of Manhattan, every two years, and estimate they will have 100 million cars by 2010!! Perhaps we should be thinking quickly of alternatives, maybe "Hevishot",Bismuth and steel shells w
  21. Hafod,I think the 18.0 and 18.5 are the barrel tube sizes in millimeters (mm). It was probably normal practice to make one barrel slightly larger than the other. English guns used to use slightly larger tubes than the continental makers, though that may not be true now. 1/4 choke is a 10 thou (.010") restriction on cylinder size, whatever that may be,so a gun made with tubes of .725" would have a smaller (slightly)hole in the end than one made with .732" tube, even though both are 1/4 choked. Even if you found markings for choke, someone could have had it opened up to suit themselves. Most fixed
  22. Ken Bruce also announced this on Radio 2 about 11:15, he said "slut" was to be removed as well as faggot. Had a little moan then shortly after,he played the whole thing. Good old Ken I say. :clapper:
  23. This saying is used on here by someone from Devon. It is also similarly used around here,as, Derbyshire born,Derbyshire bred, strong in the arm and "wick"in the head. ("wick" means something like shrewd or clever, not weak as some pronounce it). Cold enough for a walking stick!! is a saying round here. One old boy,if asked how he was, would say,"I'm pretty and well and modest thank you!!
  24. Fergie,I see you are in Kent, I would think you have a clay shooting ground near you, that does tuition, gun sales and gun smithing. I have a choice of two here, both within a 20 minute drive. Just get out the yellow pages,or if you know a CPSA member, borrow a copy of "Pull" off him, check the adverts. A lot of people think a shotgun is not worth owning, unless it says Beretta, Browning or Miroku on it. They are right I suppose, but there are also some cheaper guns about, which will do well for most folks. I have one of the previously mentioned Lanber Sporters, I had it new in 1989,and it still
  25. You are right harrycatcat, there is usually quite a few on e-bay. It's also worth ringing round the gun shops for any 2nd hand ones they may have in. I recently upgraded my cabinet to one with a ammo box on it. The local dealer, took my old one in part exchange. Less bother than advertising it.
