  2. Have you tried a crow trap where they are feeding bait it with bread once one is in others will follow you can catch a lot which can 100+ or nothing always remember it must be visited at least once a day Feltwad
  3. It seems this year has been a good breeding year for jackdaws, there is flocks of 100 plus and they have been given the barley more than usual damage , a large flock can clean off many square yards if not disturbed .When shooting them they are easy to decoy with dead birds but they will swoop in in batches of 20 plus making difficult shots has to which one to shoot. Is this problem country wide or is it to just certain areas .I would say that the rise in the jackdaw population is mostly due to the mild winters. Feltwad
  4. Well done underdog how many drms of black and what size of shot 5.or 6 I prefere 5 for rabbit. Feltwad
  5. A good bag you will find this time of year with a lot of young rooks about that decoying is a lot better but they soon get wise there is plenty of jackdaws which are dropping in the tram lines in the barley also rooks Feltwad
  6. Well most black powder shooters have their own method for cleaning the bores I personally use black powder solvent and a half bucket of boiling water ,using a bristle brush on a cleaning rod with the barrel muzzle in the water and using the cleaning rod has a pump to clean out the bore. When the fouling is removed flush out the bore with clean hot water ,dry and oil has normal .For a muzzle loader the breech is placed in the water and the pump action draws the water into the bore through the nipplesFeltwad I do this too but really don't fuss now.In fact I have three fouled guns simply swabb

  8. Well done Snarepeg all though I have been using black powder in muzzle loaders and early breech loaders for 68 years but for black powder cartridges I still prefer a paper case with a rolled turn over it may be me but I think they shoot better. Feltwad When I used to load pinfire cartridges I always preferred the paper case sadly they are no longer available
  9. I also hope what has been quoted does not put future black powder shooters of the sport ,if the proper components are used then every thing should be ok any new comers may be tempted to use such and let them know what could happen Feltwad
  10. The long fowler for shooting wildfowl goes back for at least 250 years the early ones were flintlock with a single barrell of 4 to 6 foot long and were made in big bore sizes from 2 bore to 10 bore , A 2bore was the largest shoulder gun which man good manage and was refered to has a bankgun this was a gun that was fired from the sand dunes or the sea wall at flock of waders that were feeding along the shore line of the incoming tide. The 4, 6, 7, 8, and 10 were more fore shooting flying although there long barrels did carry the shot a long way but the main reason for the long barrel was in
  11. I have also seen greased felt wads from a black powder cartridge smoldering after been fired Feltwad
  12. Yes Snarepeg we have all been there personally I preferred toilet roll when wads had to be cut with a punch ,this method did have serious consequences has far has setting fire to the vegetation but most serious was loading powder straight from the flask if a spark from the toilet paper was alight in the barrel , this did happen to me with a full flask of powder igniting in my hand and leaving me badly burnt so that but a end to toilet paper, it is better to use good card wads and pre measured charges Feltwad What was left from That Flask
  13. There is some thing with black powder shooting whether it is with a breech loading hammer gun or a muzzle loading percussion or flintlock it is stays with you for all of your life .Has for loading black powder cartridges this goes back to the 1946 for which I helped my father to load black powder cartridges because in those days cartridges were not easy to come by and I have kept on loading black powder and early nitro cartridges ever since . Today most of my shooting is pest control with a few driven black powder days shooting driven birds either partridge, pheasant or grouse using b

  19. These O/U muzzle loaders are reproes which Berretta brought out I think it was 1986 to celebrate their 300 years of gun making . They then retailed for approx. £350 and at this price dealers were left with them the reason been that a good shooting original sxs muzzle loader was a lot less money and for retailers to sell them they were forced to reduce the price so Berretta ceased to make any more. Today some still come on the market the last one I saw advertised was a old new one that a retailer still had complete with accessories the asking price was £750 and it was a standard model ,those i

  23. Went yesterday to the Shooting Show spent time talking to the muzzle loaders both on the their staic display stand and their shooting display the Historical Breech Loaders had a good display of early breech loaders . The show this year was larger than last year most of the trade stands in Hall 1 and 2 were riffles which outnumbered the shotguns ,some of the top shooting organisations were poor with no history on display and only handing out leaflets but still a good show with plenty for everyone This show can grow to be a top shooting show something the north needs but some thing mu
