Is anything really private anymore in this day and age with the technology the piggies have these days? Let's be honest,we use devices such as cell phones, laptops, etc to frequent sites on the WWW.. All of which can be traced back to its owners by ip addresses etc.. you are right about what you said Cooney, best to just keep it private and the least informative about your buisness as possible.

I agree and feel they are both equally important.. -

Would it not make more sense to get his sire and dam ?breed to the dog that produced the bad ass.. story I was told too Cooney.. Yes, the old saying is "Don't go to the Champion, go to the father of the Champion." Just to be devils advocate Neil. The father is a good all round dog, the son is Top Class. What if its the mother of the champion whos throwing the goods? By using the father you've bred off a good all round dog instead of using the top class son who contains the champion genes from his mother....You're both right really. I don't think Bo produced a lot outside of the Jeep litter -
But, I do however agree with you.. if it takes you 6 years to figure out what you are digging too, maybe you should hit the field a little more often..

those cold dogs were performance bred.. don't forget to add that very important fact.. a cold dog from garbage lineage won't stand a snowball chance in hell.. the only reason that cold dog produced was because they had been bred from proven working stock and certain genes were already in place.. if not for that, they can't produce something that was never put into them..

This is my view on the subject.. I believe one should test, any working breed before it's bred. There is culls in every litter that hits the ground, who's to say you didn't breed to the cull? Truth be told, you don't know because he wasn't tested. That being said, producing ability is something a terrier is born with, nothing can or will ever change its producing ability as they are born with that particular trait..

I remember the days of just a good terrier, locator, and spade. I hunt entirely different than most evidently. You guys carrying all these power saws etc on atvs? I couldn't imagine carrying all this around for the many miles I hike with the dogs. I prefer hiking with mine, if you work them off 4 wheelers etc it seems to rush the Terriers and they pass,a lot of game up that they would not have missed given time to work the area. Or let me say that has been my experience.

What one must consider is this, inbreeding brings the best and the worse out of the cross. I like a tight, family bred terrier myself. They tend to well rounded if they were bred towards the right traits and the seem to come more consistent. A brother x sister cross is inbreeding. You can get away with it if the Terriers, are not too closely related throughout the lineage. Better like what you have in the breeding pair because you are about to (what I refer to as) lock the good and bad traits in with a breeding as such.

What Defines A True Terrier Man
lonespade replied to Shoebootie's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
A man who works, feeds, breeds and owns Terriers for the sheer love of them.. A man who puts his Terriers well being over the greed of money. He won't just sale to the highest bidder without concern for what's best for the dog. A man who does his part to ensure the sport of digging stays alive.. he is helpful and informative of the true history of the sport. A man who is honest with himself and others and has much pride and love for the Terriers and the sport of digging.. Stern yet fair in his observations of working ability, and handy with a spade.- 38 replies

Stethoscope?? I thought that's what a terrier finder was for?? The dog should keep him from digging away should he not?

You do know you made the easiest observation that's possible in the terrier game. There's lads in this game who take pride in getting pups off the best of breeding and try their best to make them quit. Only when they can say it wasn't good enough for them have they achieved their goal. Then there's the lads who ruin good ,game terriers through their own stupidity. Again, there's another line that produces curs. Any fool can find holes in any line, it's easy. It's so easy in fact that there's countless messers doing it every year, in every country all around the world. What a genuine lad i
