  1. Thats the type of dog you want mate imo no good if they are laid up for weeks etc Wouldnt say a dog was no good if it had to be laid up for a couple of weeks, maybe not ideal but far from no good imo Dont get me wrong mate hard dogs have got there place. The dog in my avatar is on the hard side and when I say hard i mean hard! Only got 3 digs out of the dog in his first season becasue he was laid up that much! In a away yes that is no good but of course you have got too respect the heart hard dogs show but for me I would much rather have a steady bayer in the kennel which c

  3. One of the best replies i have read on this forum[kill his drive]i have seen it happen to many times,i have a cocker pup here of the same age that i bred, all i am concentrating on is eye contact.
  4. So would you say this is suitable.... Taking the pup down the field once a day for 20 minutes and say 5 minutes exercise letting him have a mooch about and calling him up every so often. Then spend 10 minutes just doing a few sits... and a few sits and stays.... Then spend the last 5 minutes just letting him have a little run about and a play.... Is that too much or is that ok?.... I will sometime throw in the odd retrieve now and again not too much though Regards Ben
  5. Best off getting a pup off good stock mate people dont tend to sell good working terriers the stuff for sale 9 times out of ten aint got it in them....
  6. Thanks for all the reply lads.... I have spoke to someone today who said just to hold back on the retrieving until the dog is a bit older.. I havnt done any serious training with the dog yet nothing formal. Just bit in the back garden whilst he is playing. His recall is coming along well and all i have been doing is giving him a few 'sit' commands through out the day and a couple of 'sit' and 'stays' and just taking a few steps back then walking back to the dog and praising him. The thing is I wasnt going to start training until he was 6 months but everyone says you have to start getti
  7. Allright folks, I have been doing a bit of retrieving with my cocker pup he is 4 and a half months old. He is doing ok with it all apart from the finish... He will sit and stay until he is told to fetch the dummy and use his nose to find it when it is out of sight which I am very pleased with. Once he has found it I give him a recall and he shoots back with the puppy dummy or tennis ball.... Great! But the problem is once he gets back to me and sits down he wont release.... He has a decent grip I would say a wrong move could easily make him hard mouthed. So i have been treading gently. At the

  21. I am no expert mate but he is only a pup I wouldnt worry about it. He wont be scared just unsure what to do with then as he is only young he has plenty of time too learn. What did you expect from him? The pup I got here wont be seeing any cold game until his training is well under way. You got loads of time yet to get him interested in game he is only just over 4 months... Regards Ben
  22. I am considering doing a keepering course myself in september think I am going to apply for newton rigg. Going to try and get an apprenticeship but I think it is looking like I will have to go and do the course full time as I am finding it difficult finding someone to take on a trainee. Also I am looking to do a bit of voluntary work in the mean time aswell hopefully that will help my prospects. Been in touch with a few farms that rear gamebirds just waiting for a couple of people to get back to me.. All the best anyway mate hope you get a course sorted Regards Ben
