That's looking amazing now Jimmy. Just as I like a stock to be. Not too light, but not too dark with rich browns in the tones. Lovely! To be honest, I think this may turn out better than the stock wa

Looking good but you shot me down about not staining beech :thumbs:

Mitch when i stripped it and saw the gold markings in it and the grain along with the pertiner of the 18 yrs of age (the dark spots ) well what can i say .

iv try,d to keep some of the dark spots but iv lightened them up a bit and removed some of them .

Simon iv removed the scratches and the dings and started to smooth her out .

But i am going to put a little stain on her to make the rest of the stock pop if you know what i mean i finished the SMK as well and she is all back together now she looks stunning ,

Well im away back to smoothing your stock some more lol only two weeks to go

Simon, do you normally have a sling and sling stud fitted to that stock ? Or do you want the hole plugged; just thought I'd ask [bANNED TEXT] jimbo goes further

Thanks Vizlauk yes I do. I removed the sling swivel before sending it to Jim and it will go back in that hole when the stock comes back.

Hi mac hows it going - any updates?

Hi Tom well after looking at the stock and Viz had a look this morning i decided to strip it right back so when i got in from work set about sanding her back again iv done one side up to now but iv left the dark at the end of the cheek piece

as i think this will high light the cheek piece

just got the other side to do now then wet and dry the hole stock to smooth her out

My God! Now you've virtually taken it right back to the first moment it was cut from the factory pattern stock Jimmy.

It now looks absolutely like brand new and raw. It's both exciting for how this mature beech stock is going to look. But it makes me a little sad too as, the patina of patchy wear marks, scratches and little dents and dings which resulted from some really memorable outings on my permission in west Yorkshire have now been erased forever. :cray:

When I bought the rifle in 1998 there was a meaddow on my shoot bounded with the sloping woodland of the Went Valley that teemed with warrens of rabbits that were getting into the corn and barley fields adjacent to it. But in the misty sunsets at a certain part of it, it looked like a hauntingly beautiful English landscape oil painting.

It was my dad's permission originally. So that too made for powerful memories from when I was only 8 years old and learning from him.

This HW80 provided me with some incredible shots that, normally, you'd see claimed on forums like this and you'd think " Yeah..Rubbish!" But it really did happen where I found myself taking the longest range shots that I ever dared with any air rifle before. Almost out to 100 yards and still had lethal energy to spare. Any hit forward of the upper body and it was lights out for any rabbit.

But then, the sad day came in 2003 when the meaddow was fenced off, bulldozed clear of grass, hedgrows and cowparsley and blasted away by the expanding stone quarry further down the land from it.

Gone forever like the marks and scratches that came from that magic silent place on my stock here.

Not that I'm shedding too many tears mind. This is an amazing rifle that made more out of me as an air rifle hunter than any air gun did before it. My Feinwerkbau Sport 127 was the first rifle I had that showed how seriosly good an air rifle could be. British Webleys and BSAs were not on the same performance league as this. The HW80 took that reality on much further and ultimately, this particular HW80 .22 when it was licensed for higher power.

She deserves the new lease of life she's getting. And there are some equally beautiful places here to make new memories with her.

Just seeing her stripped bare, made me feel very nostalgic for her past life.

Jimmy you just bring out all that beautiful gold fleck and swirl of grain there is in that lovely old Mk.II stock.

Get an HW80 in your shooting lives Gentlemen. The older, the better. You will never regret it.

Dont worry Simon there are still some dark patches that have to stay as 18 yrs of use have taken its tole on the old girl

some of the wear has gone to far into the stock and grain to be removed and would distort the wood if i went to far with her

but in some of the grain i think it will make the grain pop yous gold flecks are still there all of them as they run right through the stock and can not be removed any way .

the smoothing out starts to day this will lighten the dark patches up mind but not enough to take it all away .

she is still drying out lads after a quick bath to remove the dust after sanding so the dark patches look darker lol

I don't have the skills or know how to do this myself Billy. . But I can imagine this must be very satsfying and rewarding to do. I could be a happy man making my own designs of rifle stocks for myself and customers if there was a decent living to be made from it. My dad was a brilliant carpenter and wood worker who made a few shotgun stocks for himself and a few shooting friends of his. He could have made a professional life and career from it but, never had the desire to take it further than a bit of a past-time.
